Following the US Open Maria's ranking is now down to Number four in the world.

1 (1) HENIN, JUSTINE BEL ............ 5200 points ...13 tournaments played
2 (4) KUZNETSOVA, SVETLANA RUS 3780 ............21
3 (3) JANKOVIC, JELENA SRB ......... 3365............28
4 (2) SHARAPOVA, MARIA RUS ....... 3235........... 15
5 (6) CHAKVETADZE, ANNA RUS ..... 2940........... 21
6 (5) IVANOVIC, ANA SRB ............. 2925........... 20
7 (9) WILLIAMS, SERENA USA .........2391............ 8
8 (8) PETROVA, NADIA RUS ........... 2266........... 23
9 (14) WILLIAMS, VENUS USA ........ 2215........... 12
10 (10) BARTOLI, MARION FRA ....... 2067........... 31
11 (7) MAURESMO, AMELIE FRA ...... 2062........... 17
12 (11) HANTUCHOVA, DANIELA SVK 1932........... 25

Kuznetsova has gone from 800 points behind Maria to 500 points ahead! A lot of catching up to do.

Jankovic is 130 points ahead of Maria, having played 13 more tournaments.

Maria is only 300 points ahead of Ivanovic and Chakvetadze, and she has quite a few points to defend from her tournament wins at Linz and Zurich last year.

WTA rankings make me go :cuckoo:
seriously... they are a wayyyy to crazy for me!!

now honestly... I can't see Kuzna as a serious treat to Maria
but Janko - the I play every tourny-exibition-or-wherever - MAY BE a treat
also Ana
but Chake...well, she totally choke away loads of matches...

So...I really wanna see Maria stoping Jelena to reach n2
'cause if Maria doesn't make this year for sure Jelena will make this to herself next year
I seriously doubt that she can repeat that performance

unfortunatelly those days we have loads of talented players, but few have the Henin-Maria-Williams head...

I want to see Maria back I miss Maria the fighter , I don't know if it's the shoulder but she's different , and she goes to more and more fashion events , she seems to do less practice than required .

I think for Anna Chakvetadze to be a threat she would have to successfully defend her points from winning in Kremlin Cup as for Jelena, is it possible that she still could gain? Maria has some serious points she better defend, if not its syanora 2007!

honestly 2007 is already dead to me so what ever happens is a bonus! if maria wins the rest of her tournaments then i'd be over the moon!!! but im already looking forward to 2008 and hoping that it'll be better than this year...

in terms of the rankings, i think it'll be good for maria to drop down abit, stay at number 4/5 for a while and take out everyone from that posistion.. she always plays her best ranked lower! lol! but honestly rankings dont matter, its how you play every match that counts... if maria is going to win titles, then she'll win them ranked anywhere! she won her two slams ranked 15 and 4 in the world, and she's never won a title when she's been number 1! so to me that just shows that the rankings are bs...

The lower you are ranked, the more likely you are to meet a top seed like Justine in an earlier round. The No 2 will only meet the No 1 in a Final. The Nos 3 and 4 might meet the No 1 in the Semi. Below No 4, you could meet the No 1 in the quarters. So rankings do make a difference in draws.

Maria has two spare tournaments since 17 are counted toward your ranking. That could gbe a haelp against the Jankovic Chakvetadze challenge. but Maria still needs to play well to stay at No 4 or higher for the Australian Open.

Maria has a lot of points to defend through Australia. After that she should be able to pick up some. Russian No 1 is a key target. However for World No 1 Justine looks uncatchable for at least six to nine months if not more.

Let's hope this latest loss will shake her into doing more, though her injury is a factor

Its going to happen....since for the best part of the last 12 months Maria has been playing well below her best. If it wasnt for the good showing at the early slams then it may be worse.

The good thing is that in 2008 there is many points for Maria to win back.

Henin is a class above all atm...5200 pts

With Henin pulling out of China Open, that leaves, guess who? Kuznetsova, as the only top ten player there, so she has a good chance of defending her title points there. All in all she has fewer points to defend going into Australia than Maria.

Same goes for Jankovic - although shhe has a LOT to defend in early 2008

Chakvetadze has wins at Canton and Moscow to defend this autumn, but wasn't at YEC last year.

Ivanovic had a bad autumn last year so has little to defend

I don't care about the ranking, especially not at this point, I just want her to be healthy and playing well, then her ranking will go up as well anyway.

Ranking is important. Seedings and Olympic entry are decided by ranking

Well considering what she has been through this year I think she has done really well to still be where she is at. Just think of what she is going to be able to do rankings wise in 2008 with so many gaps to fill in.

given the year with problems its a miracle that she's still there at no.4
when the problems are done with for good next year (and i'm hardly gonna beleive it) maria should comeback a way better player with only the upsides/positives remaining from this unfortunate year (she ended up probably the best in breaking serves on tour right now..cos she just had to when she couldn't serve herself..so here's one big upside to start with..)
so within the long run next year justine shouldn't be too lonely up there..
