View Full Version : Who Would Win: Justine or Roger?

say they made it like that "battle of the sexes" billie jean king match in the '70's, where king could hit the doubles areas and had some other advantages. and, oh yeah, say they played on clay.

i'm not a justine fan, but the way she's been playing, i'd put money on her to beat roger in three sets in a best-of-three.

what do you guys think?

Paul.
Sep 9th, 2007, 10:03 PM
With the doubles court and the advantages, she should probably sneak a game or too.

6-1 6-1?

Not sure

Even with being able to hit the doubles lines and Roger only having one serve it would be Roger 1 and 1. The top 500 men could beat the top 10 women. Men just hit too hard.

No he's not. He's the 2nd best clay court player in the world. If it weren't for Nadal, Fed would have 2-3 French Open titles.
Even on clay, Roger would thrash Henin (or any other woman).

I think the winner(s) would be the people who put on the match and got people to pay to see it. Otherwise, I hold to what I write EVERY TIME this same thread comes up -- men and women can have similar great skill levels, but a man's body is more powerful, and therefore given two people of similar sizes -- that gives him a huge advantage in any sport against a woman.

No WTA player would defeat Federer, and if they did have an exhibition these days, I don't think any player would play to their full ability...they wouldn't take it seriously. If Federer actually played his fully ability against Justine (or any WTA player) he'd kick their butt and the audience would throw apples at him for sure lol. Therefore, I don't think Federer would win 6:0, 6:0. He'd probably let off and make it at least 6:3, 6:3 or something :p

They could make Roger play in a wheelchair with no wheels (which I suppose would just be a run of the mill chair) and he'd still kick Justine's ass. I didn't dignify this thread by reading it so I presume the author has already admitted to it being a joke.

Any top ATP player would defeat any WTA tennis player (including Henin and the Williams) ... 6-0 6-0 to 6-2 7-5 (if they're playing terribly).

Polikarpov
Sep 10th, 2007, 12:41 PM
Uh, oh. Here we go again.

Justine and Roger could play a match serving underhand but Roger would steamroll her 6-0, 6-1.

Even the Williams sister's average serve speed of 110-118 mph would not give them cheap points because it's normal for men to face serves in that range--and with heavier spin too.

MistyGrey
Sep 10th, 2007, 12:42 PM
Fed 6-0,6-0.

The only WTA player that MIGHT get a game off Fed is Justine on clay, but even that is a big ask. Every other player would get creamed 6-0,6-0...

Mic-190286

men are too powerful, regardless of skill. even if a top10 woman plays a top50 man, the man can win nearly all his service points as his serve averages higher than a williams sister.

fed vs justine, 61 61.

lol, Federer almost beat the Bryan brothers single handedly over the summer (Allegro being the weaker link--I guarantee he would have won with Wawrinka). To the poster who said maybe Henin, the Williams, and Sharapova combined have a change against him...

...no (I think that poster was joking anyway)

The only surface Henin even has a shot at getting GAMES off of him is clay (with all the aforementioned handicaps in place--doubles alleys and whatnot) as it has already been stated that if it weren't for Nadal, he'd easily have 2-3 FOs as well. He is the undisputed #2 on clay for the past three years. Otherwise, 6-0, 6-0 for Federer and any other ATP player in the top 20, maybe 6-1, 6-3 for ATP 20-50 because of unforced errors. I love Henin, but let's be realistic... please.

Under Patty Schnyder's profile at wtatour.com:

Ranked No.15, beat No.1 Austrian regional champion Patrik Mayr 76(6) 75 before a sold out crowd of 1,500 during a Battle of the Sexes match held in Austria Sunday, December 15; Mayr's ATP rank was No.1162.

I always though that was funny. He was probably crap compared to Patty yet served his way through the match. Men are too powerful!

You have to get down to ATP 1500 or so to maybe talk about having an even match. It's a whole different world. And against Roger trying his best? Surely not a single game.

I don't think this is a question of sexism but rather a question of realism. I'm a huge fan of Justine and women's tennis in general, but come on... Men's tennis is almost an entirely different sport these days.

I'm sure in the old days with the wooden rackets and all power was les important and it came down to skill and touch. In that era it would be easier for a woman to play a man imo. But nowadays power is so important. Even in the women's game the powerplay is the most dominant form.

So I don't think any of the top women would come remotely close to beating Roger.

As for the return of serve though: in mixed doubles the women have to return the men's serve too...? And a lot of the girls seem to be doing just fine there. But off course it's very different from the singles game.

i saw mary pierce hit a return winner off a goran ivanisevic first serve at the hopman cup once. goran, for pete's sake! i maintain my stance: the four women i mentioned earlier would have a pretty good shot at guys going down from #300 on.

No woman can beat a halfway decent ATP player, or even take a few games off him unless he's a compassionate person. It has got nothing to do with talent. Justine is actually more talented than most ATP players IMO. It's mostly a matter of weight of shot. No lightweight boxer, not even the best in the world would ever be able to beat even a mediocre heavyweight, even if he is 10 x more talented because no matter what he does, none of his punches would hurt the heavyweight. But come the first blow from the heavyweight, it's lights out for the lightweight.

Read my post a few up from yours, if Patty can beat someone in the top1200 then i'm pretty sure the world #1 can beat someone a little higher!

The mixed doubles serve/return is a good point, but i doubt a woman could consistently return a man's serve on every point, rather than a quarter of them. Most women only return about a quarter of the WS's serves!

The boxer comparison is perfect!

It's clear that Henin will lose against Federer, no question about that.

But I'm pretty sure that Henin will win more points then the Williams-sisters can. Power is very important for Venus and Serena, the fact that they are that strong is a big advantage against many WTA-players. But when they play against someone who has more power, a man, they have a big problem.

Henin has not that many power, in here game here skills are more important. With these skills, with her wonderful competence, she will be able to get more points against Federer then any other WTA-player.
