In another thread, I suggested both men and women should play :
best of 3 sets matches in the early rounds
best of 5 sets matches in QF, SF and Finals.Do you agree it would be a good format ?

i think it would be good for best of 3 up to the quarters then best of 5 onwards... it would be pointless for the women to play best of 5 in the early rounds, would just be a waste of time!!! lol! but in the 2nd week it would be great...

5 set matches are just far too long :help: I just can't sit still watching one of them all the way...

Only for ATP.

Why not WTA ?

I really don't like your format. but yes it is an interesting suggesion though.
If had to put this format i'll only put it for only ATP.

I think the men need something between best of 3 and 5 sets for slams, because best of 5 is too long and best of 3 is probably too easy for the men in slams.

I like 3 sets.......for both WTA & ATP
Sep 11th, 2007, 01:37 AM
Keep it the way it is. Dont think the women will be able to handle it because they'll get tired going into the rounds.
Sep 11th, 2007, 01:39 AM
I think both men and women should be 3 sets....5 sets is ridiculous..just my opinion

The WTA is already injury-plagued and making them play 3 out of 5 will make it worse (if that's possible).
Sep 11th, 2007, 01:46 AM
I like the idea.
The only way it seems well see a ladies final at the US Open go to 3 sets in this century is if the players played best 3 out of 5.
Best 2 out of 3 sets on the men's side would give the men a slightly better chance to beat Federer which seems impossible in best 3 out of 5.
For someone like Serena, who starts off matches slow, best 3 out of 5 would give her a shot to get her act together.

Best of 5 sets for every final on the ATP and WTA tour. Remain best of three for QF and SF
If best of 5 sets in QF and SF, there will be problems with player fatigue and risk of injuries/retirement.
Five set finals are better as more value for money and should produce epic matches, making them more exciting.

Silly idea. Best of five sets in GSs are perfect the way they are. Only rarely do you get bad five setters, and it usually involves scrubs anyway.
Sep 13th, 2007, 07:49 PM
bad, bad idea..

3 sets only! Being a male, my parents taught me not to use any physical force against females.
Do Women swim 1500 meters at the Olympics?... Nope.
The men’s format is OK as it is too.

i think they should at least re-introduce a 5 set final to the year ending champs like they used to do
