Poll time:

Martina Hingis: Wins only 1 game in two sets.
Maria Sharapova: Loses early despite a great draw, drops to no.4 (probably to 5 in a few weeks)
Serena Williams: Loses to Justine for the 3rd consecutive time in a slam and grilled by media
Dinara Safina: Showed us the worst performance among 128 women in the Slam.
Ana Ivanovic: So much hype but now 0-9 against the big 3.
Elena Dementieva: Career continues to go south.
Tatiana Golovin: Has a good summer on hard courts then loses in the first round.
Zi Yan: look above

sharapova

this was her tournament to get herself back in the top title contenders group with a draw that would see her through to the final with ease...

after radwanska she would have faced peer, chakvetadze and kuznetsova and then henin in the final... she may not have won the final seeing how awesome henin was, but had she played well in the third round she would have definately beat the players en route to the final...

everyone else on that list arent really losers, they had nothing to lose, except maybe serena but she lost to the better player so no hard feelings there...

i think it's the sisters.
Venus would have been in a great position to win the final with Sveta's level of play through the tournament.
Serena is affected. Hope that will bring motivation, not sulkiness on the court, next time.

Sharapova.

She was the defending champion, the world number 2 and has beneffited the easiest draw while all the best other contestants : Henin, the Williams siters, the two Serbs and in a lesser extent Bartoli were all caught up in the "death group" and thrown in the middle of a battle of titans, obliged to consistantly (at least after the 2nd round) to measure themselves with the female warriors of the tournament. Each battle from then, was a total offenssive war with great intensity pumping a great deal of energy.

So Maria is the biggest loser for all of these reasons, for not having capitalize on a less agressive competition and not living up to her rank.

Martina certainly didn't come out a winner. NO one knew what shape she was in physically or psychologically due to the break up with Radek. But she was still considered by some as a player with a chance to go far into the draw, especially her side of the draw. So for her, this was a case of opportunities lost, and the continuation of a dismal year which hasn't produced a tournament victory since Tokyo. WE can just hope for a better 2008.

For Maria, it was an even bigger case of opportunities squandered, as there was no one blocking her path to the final. It has also been a dismal year for her, with I think just one tournament victory.

But Serena may at least tie Maria for top prize. She came into the tournament over weight and over confident, apparently convinced she can just drop by and pick up any slam for the taking. But since Australia this girl named Justine has stood squarely in her path and Serena appears to be in denial about that.

Then there is what hurt her even more, her "lucky shots" comment during her petulant press conference. She took a real beating on that and richly deserved it.

Last time someone beat Serena 3 times straight (capriati)... it lit a fire in her and she came back unstoppable in 2002. Hopefully Henin hasnt awakened the beast.....clearly she can get over these loses....

Maria - without a doubt. :crying2:

She had a great draw to reach the final and even defend. If she just kept her head on straight, she probably would have given the way everyone in the bottom half turned out playing. :help: What's heartbreaking is that she didn't even get to the latter stages and more significantly, the way she lost that 3rd round match was frustrating. She was up a break in the third set. Just won the second handily. :weirdo: Anyway, whatever...it's done...definitely has work to do - physically and mentally. I think it was a mental loss more than anything. Maria historically doesn't do very well too when she's heavily favored for something. Still, she's the biggest loser as she had the most to lose. Hopefully, that was the last wake-up call she needed to do better and go back to her winning ways.

Special mention: Hingis. :help: I saw her up close when she lost. My god, not even a fight. Just allowed herself to be thrashed.

It's definately Sharapova.

She has the easiest draw among the 6 players capable of winning the slam, widely expected to be in the Final against whoever that survives the "Draw of Despair, Horrors and Death"... and go on to win her 3rd slam.

However, I predicted before the tournament that she will be out in the 3rd round against Aga... and viola, the rest is history :tape:

It's difficult to choke when you're getting thrashed.

I think Sveta actually outdid herself - she's one of the biggest winners this week - another slam final and a No.2 ranking, now the No.1 Russian player as well. Pretty good for not playing well in semis or finals.

After Maria Sharapova - biggest 2007 USO loser is Ana Ivanovic, because that lose against Zi Yan in Toronto when she lose 4th seed status in draw and Sveta instead her have open draw to final. With 2nd GS final in season and new 700 pts she will be already today #2 and probably #2 at end of season (she dont defend nothing from 2006)...

goldenlox
Sep 11th, 2007, 01:11 PM
It has to be Sharapova. Insanely weak half of the draw. She would have been the only woman player getting any media attention on days the bottom half played.
She won the USO series, she had points to defend. And people were questioning where her game was even before the tournament.

Now, where is she? This was a loss to a non-contender, and a continuing of her service woes. Her opponent was even dancing when Sharapova served.

Why is Dinara on this list? She won her first major, with Dechy, and reached the 4th round in singles.
For Dinara, that's a good major.

I'm thinking the same thing. In all honesty, Dinara was not going to beat Henin and there were no expectations of her beating Henin, so to make it as far as possible until the eventual champion defeats you is not entirely a bad major.

It pains me to say it, but the obvious answer is Maria. I'm not sure what's more shocking- the fact that she lost in the third round, or the fact that she lost after dropping only two games in two matches. She looked to be on fire, and then just like that, her run was surprisingly over.

i'm not sure if many of you know what wtaworld is, it's a forum. it's where messages regarding various topics are exchanged. this thread is a question and i provided an answer to illustrate my personal opinion on the matter.
now, i understand some people are hard of understanding so they feel the need to personally attack people with tirades unrelated to the topic at hand.
i applaud you for being such person. i wouldn't be shocked if i were to learn that your education system has dangerously failed you.

Agreed - Safina's getting a bad rap here.
Justine, if anything was sharper beating the crap out of poor Dinara than at any time during the tournament. It was death by a thousand cuts with that Henin forehand in the first set. Dina actually contributed to some pretty good exchanges in the second set.

The thread asked people who the biggest loser was at the Open. I answered. You didn't like my response. You go on a personal attack. Tennis players are the subjects to be discussed on this forum. Not the people who don't appreciate the childish attitudes of your favorite. Please tell me what you think you have coming.

I think the big losers were Serena and Maria, but each for different reasons.

I think it wasn't good for Serena mentally to lose to Justine again and if she was injured, it shows she isn't able to recover from injuries and play for a sustained period of time. That's a problem for her. However, if she is pregnant, as some claim, that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish.

Maria loses lots of points. That's gotta hurt. Also, she doesn't seem to be able to get over her shoulder problems. She absolutely must have her serve working because she isn't the best mover out there. If Maria can recover and play well for a sustained period of time, this will be just another bump in the road for her.
