I sincerely didn't think it was unprofessional, and I would have supported anyone doing that. I also knew it hurt her like crazy b/c she defeated a tough Pova and Linds to get to that stage. Maybe I am not sporty enough.lol.

But I do wonder if the opponent was a Ws/Pova/Linds Hingis if peeps would still think it a big deal?

I don't think it was unprofessional to look after yourself first.

However, I don't think anyone acknowledging that can then turn around and start saying Justine would have won the match had she been healthy.

There's something to be said for being the last one standing at the end of the tournament and Amelie was just that.

There is some parallel to the Serena/Venus vs Justine matches at the US open in that it's been argued that they weren't fully fit.

Again I take the same view - if you're not fit enough to win the match, that's just too bad but it's not the victor's problem.

Actually I like her more because she retired. Why play if you're injured and losing? And she pissed off people at the same time. Terrific.

I don't think the ACT or retiring in a grandslam final was the disgusting part. The bad part in my opinion is that at the time Justine and Amelie were friends and she knew that would be Amelie's first grandslam and she basically took the moment from her.

Its better to retire than to make excuses later after loosing the match. atleast you dont have to go through the pain, the media would have attacked her in both cases.

I did bring it up. I just find it funny that Justine smiles at Venus complaining about her health in their match, during her post match interview - and says she is surprised.
During Aus Open 06, it was obvious that Justine was getting spanked - and who knows maybe she wasnt feeling well at all? but my point is how can SHE say she is surprised by Venus' problem??
And then her post Aus Open 06 final interview... one of the worst EVER. Very disgraceful (giving absoultely NO credit to Amelie).
Justine is an incredible champion, and her interviews are not bad on a regular basis like Serena's, but she has had her moments as well...

To me - and to Amelie according to what I've read - the bad part was not the retirement itself, but her words after the match. Saying things like all Amelie had to do was to put the ball back in court etc...:o

When it comes to classless exits, Henin's puzzling retirement at the AO last year ranks right up there with Serena's post-defeat remarks a few days ago. The retirement was suspicious because there was no indication of any health issues before the match. What's worse is her cold, ungracious demeanor toward Mauresmo afterward, who was robbed of her moment to win her first GS outright for the first time after such a long wait. I was a fan of Henin before the AO because of her finesse and underdog status in today's women's power game (amazing that she now seems to generate as much power as any other ball crusher on the tour). However, it will be a long time before I forget it or forgive Henin for her behavior at the AO Final.

Yes I agree!
