Congratulations Justine. It's not easy beating one Williams sister, but to beat both of them back to back is incredible, and she deserves to be commended for that - and she didn't lose a set to either! She's the best player for 2007, followed by Serena and then Venus. I have a feeling that these three will be battling it out over the next five or six years, and hopefully we can see them play in some finals and not the quarters/semis. Here's hoping for a blockbuster 2008! :yeah:

That was a great effort by Henin although I think Venus let her off the hook a few times in the second set Justine still played well. Hopefully she didn't run out of gas beating both Williams sisters cuz it'll be a shame for her to pull off such a run and then lose in the final kinda like Martina did when she beat both back to back.

:yeah:

Justine, the Williams sisters and Jankovic are giving us some great tennis. These are the kind of matches we were hoping for for a long time. The top players struggled with injuries for too long, it's nice to see them back at their best, to see them battling it out.

Justine may have won this time, Venus certainly showed that she can beat Justine as well. Exciting times could very well be ahead.

I just wish the childish bickering would stop. Buthey, that's what makes the boards fun!

I love the sisters but they played some really sloppy tennis against Justine. Justine is almost pure perfection. I really don't see Serena and Venus beating her in the future unless they really step their game up a notch(and Serena loses some weight).

imo Venus played very well.
She didn't make a lot of silly erratic errors and she played a smart an mentally very sound match.
At the end both players were tired and both Venus and Justine lost their first serve%.
I don't think you can really say Venus played a bad match. she played very well. This match could have been hers if it wasn't for like maybe 4 points? It's those type of situation that make great matches.

You're right about the WIlliams never beating Justine again until they clean up their acts...Venus must, must, MUST, deal with her unforced errors...but, at 27 im not sure how much more she can do. Serena, on the hand, must, must, MUST deal with her fitness issues, play more, and then let's see what happens. Oh God, I just got a scary thought and that is, if the realize that cannot dominate or win over Justine consistently, they may decide to retire from tennis...

 Interesting theory. However, if the sisters and Justine are the three best players in the world and Justine is the one not giving it away through stupid mistakes, Justine is the best player in the world. Besides, every point is the result of a mistake. Either by way of a UE or by hitting a shot that can be attacked by your opponent. Without mistakes we would have one never ending rally.

Nah, I think it's going to be the other way around. They'll be more motivated to get their acts together and beat Justine. Their biggest problems are injuries. This constant stop-and-play-stop-and-play is really hurting them.

Justine Is A Smart Player
If She and Carlos looked at any of Venus's previous matches (which I'm pretty sure they did; I know I would if I knew Venus was in my section of the draw at a major), they clearly saw where Justine could expose Venus's weak points. I watched every match she played and figured out her serve pattern:

Serve to the Deuce Court: Outwide or Down The T
Justine returned unbelievable against Venus's slices out wide and Venus wasn't hitting many serves down the T.

Serve to the Ad Court: Down The T to the forehand
If Justine saw what I saw when I watched Venus's matches, 99% of the time Venus served to her opponents forehand. Her serve out wide is not reliable and she never really goes for that one. Justine read the serve down the T and to the forehand perfectly today.

I think Venus and Serena should begin to evaluate their opponents games, watch film, and actually get to know thier opponents names before they play them. Good match Venus , Justine just saw what I'm sure many of us saw and pulled out the victory any no. 1 would. :worship:

ignorant post. of course when the williams sisters lose they are going to do so b/c of errors. guess why??? b/c they hit the ball as hard as they can on every shot and refuse to go to a plan B when that plan doesn't work. if a beginner walked out there on the court and swung as hard as they could on every shot then of course "they would be giving it away with stupid mistakes". these williams sisters losses just show the mindless tennis that they play and unwillingness (or maybe it's the lack of ability) to adjust.

All,

You are the one sounding ignorant around here. Are you really that dense?

The sisters have won 14 singles slams between them - 6 doubles - and four mixed. Plus numerous titles and the Olympics. Get a da@n clue - clueless. So if they won them by playing mindless tennis - then they need to get it back like they had it then - and like they had it in two slams this year. Imbecile!

And who you calling a monkey? Your mama? Please google 'Lucy.' The mother of all races. W/o her - your sorry azz wouldn't be here. Without the black woman - humans as we know them wouldn't be here - and even the slow ones like you. Do some research. Respect your elders. you're an idiot. i'm not racist so quit trying to play that card. it's not working out. yes, they have won many titles in the past. they are so much stronger and more athletic than 99% of the other girls that i've never understood why they don't tone it down to around 75%. that would still allow them to control the points and allow them to prevent some of the errors. but no, they refuse to.

I may be wrong, but I think that your main problem with them is that in your opinion they don't play beautiful tennis. That's your good right, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, there is no denying that their game has been extremely effective. They don't really need to have a plan B because their plan A has made them the most successful players of the decade. That doesn't mean that they will win ALL the time, but who does?

I mean Henin for beating both... it doesn't matter that they didn't serve well, make a lot of UE and that kind of stuff... she beated them and that is what counts at the end... she defff is the player of the year but is not the best player of the world, for me the best tennis players are the ones who are in my signature... by far.

that's true but b/c they are so strong and athletic, they could easily tone it down some. this would allow them to still control the points and cut down on the errors. just b/c you've had success with a gameplan in the past doesn't mean that it doesn't need to change. they (along with sharapova) only seem to focus on their game without any adjustments for the opponent. i loved hearing agassi in the booth during the federer/roddick match when he said they he watched a ton of tape of his opponents in order to determine the best gameplan to defeat them. it's frustrating to hear the williams sisters and sharapova (and even henin) always say "i'm only focused on my game". that's not the right game plan.

and btw, my main problem with the williams sisters is their attitude off the court.

would you STFU about this racist crap??!! 2 of my favorite players of the past have been james blake and chanda rubin. believe it or not, you can actually not like the williams sisters and not be racist! i know that may be difficult to understand.

as far as off the court, how about the post match loss interviews? the most recent example being serena's the other night. time and time again they make these comments when they lose. it's become quite a tired line. they're drama queens (serena in particular)and always won't the attention on themselves. their father is the worst of all. if he's out of the limelight then he'll make a ridiculous stupid comment just to bring attention on him.

i flat out don't like them. does that make me a racist? hell no.

For somebody who is not a racist, it did not take much to call Venus a monkey.

Those kind of words are only easily accessible to racists.
Those words are far removed from non-racists everyday vocabulary.

I wanted to start this thread to show that there are some fans out there with their heads on straight. Sure, I'm a mega-Williams fan, but I'm not blind. Justine legitimately beat Serena and Venus here, and there's no getting around that. I'm not buying into all the gibberish that Richard is throwing out there; if Serena and Venus weren't 100%, they should have been adults about it and not played. By playing, they eliminated all possible excuses for losing, and they need to accept that. Justine is having her moment in the spotlight right now. She's the top player for 2007, but that doesn't mean that it will stay that way for 2008. That's why tennis is so great - it's unpredictable!!! Serena and Venus could make a huge push next year. and I think that they will. Losing to Justine will motivate both of them to improve their games, and I think they'll turn it around. We'll have to wait and see won't we? I get excited just thinking about the potential matches! :bounce: And too bad for Sharapova...looks like she'll be on the outside looking in for a while. :tape: Justine, Serena, and Venus will be the best three of this decade. Instead of bashing each other, let's enjoy the matches and appreciate what these players are doing right now.

By beating the WS she earned the no. 1 ranking not like those paper tigers Sharapova and Mauresmo who rack up points but collapse against the WS. If you can't beat at least one WS in a GS you don't deserve no.1
