View Full Version : Cat Fight Alert: Tracy Austin vs. Jim Courier

A few moments ago, Austin and Courier got into a heated debate about Radwanska's tactics on Sharapova's second serve. Courier thought it was absolutely appalling and unacceptable, while Tracy thought it was a great tactic that was perfectly within the rules. Who's right?

Courier is such a bitchy queen. And Tracy was right... you can stand and return wherever you want to.

I can't believe I am saying this but Tracy Austin IS RIGHT. Look, its not against the rules its called being MENTALLY STRONG. If it is within the rules you can do WHATEVER you want on court. I am surprised that Jim the Drama Queen Courier is upset that Maria lost. I thought Jim would be more concerned with checking out the young male players like he always does.

He was being a little baby about it too, throwing his hands up and trying to cut her off. I agree with Tracy 100% especially when she alluded to the men taking so many injury timeouts (again it's in the rules and you do what you got to do to win). That set him off like he was thinking "how dare she comment on the men." I hope Tracy takes some potshots at him while she's calling the Vaidisova match

Courier's the one getting upset by the argument lol.

But seriously, Radwanska wasn't shifting around during Sharapova's service motions so i don't get what the big deal is.

He so has a crush on Djokovic. We might see someone else in the news for cruising before this tournament is over. :tape:

Tracey is ABSOLUTELY right.

She can move up then move back. It's no more than when Maria has taken bathroom breaks when she was down, then coming back to win. It's no more than when Maria runs to the side of the court on another players serve to get a new racquet then coming back to win the match.

In fact, Maria did it today on her opponent, but it didn't work.

I've seen players move inside the baseline, then back up a little to receive the serve.

Angi just did it on every one of Maria's service game today.

And it okay because the chair did not object to it.

And Dansnewbeg,

You're right, she wasn't shifting around during Maria's service motions. She just did it before she served. And that's acceptable.

If it was Venus or Serena, she would have felt a 123+++ mph serve into her body.

I love Tommy Haas' one comment about Jim Courier. "He has his tongue up Federer's ass." AO 2006. LOL!
Anywho, to the topic. Even Sharapova said - At the end of the day. The ball is in your hands and it is up to you. What she is doing on the other side of the net has no physical affect on her poor serving. It was Sharapova, get some mental fortitude. Oh wait, Serena beat it out of you.

i do agree that it seems to be an unwritten rule that players dont go up that far. she was up so far it looked like she was about to hit a volley off the serve. it wasnt illegal and a smart tactic i just dont think most pro players would do that. that being said it shouldnt matter how much ur opponent moves in especially when they dont much power to attack the serve. its no excuse for those double faults. i just dont think sharapova is mentally tough unless she is playing mentally weak players like schnyder. i mean she even choked against zvonereva which is just ridiculous.

Everyone knows Jim Courier is gay its one of those open secrets. The way how Jim always tries to talk about how he finds certain male players attractive. Yesterday he talked about Djokovic and Andy Murray's younger brother Jamie. Courier also has crushes on James Blake and he has the hots for Monfils as well.

I don't get all the fuss. It's not against the rules - it would be impossible to police anyway. And it's not your job to assist your opponent serving by standing stock still and making their depth perception nice and easy for them.

The thing is that it's a tactic, but also a dangerous one not a wrong one.

The player that moves forward hella better be ready return or volley the first serve or second serve because it's going to be hit directly at their head. The player also runs the risk of being passed looking like a fool stuck mid court not really at net or ready on the baseline.

I thought i've seen it b4 when someone will shift to one side to entice a player to serve to the other, and then move right b4 the serve to change position. I thought movement was fine as long as it wasn't meant to deliberately and blatantly distract the server. In my matches, I definitely move around.. sometimes to psych the server out  I thought it was perfectly fine

Definitely - it could completely backfire. That's the risk you take.

I've seen other players do this - in the "pro" leagues. Henman used to shift around a lot on return of serve, mainly side to side but sometimes he would also move forward and backward a little - though not as much as Radwanksa was doing.

Also, I distinctly remember a match between Mary Joe Fernandez and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, at Wimbledon, in the early 90s. Mary Joe was moving around a lot on return of serve and she ended up winning the match. I think it was a quarter-final. 1991 in fact.

It's a little unusual for a player to stand so close to the service line on the serve before moving back, but I've seen many players stand outside the doubles alley to dare their opponent to serve down the T.

I think it was a quarter-final. 1991 in fact.Yes, Sabatini used to do the little rain dance when her opponent was serving, and Monica always moved in when returning serve. I think Jim let his misogyny show. He's looking for something, anything, to bitch about.
especially when she alluded to the men taking so many injury timeouts (again it's in the rules and you do what you got to do to win). That set him off like he was thinking "how dare she comment on the men."
That doesn't surprise me. These guys like to dish but can't take. The male commentators have no problem dissecting the women's play but they feel the men's play is beyond women's pretty little heads.

I hope someone uploads this to YT.

Why doesn't anybody comment about Novak and his bouncing the ball more than 10 times schtick? or how Henman strolls to towel off drink water, check in on the kid etc...

The Maria and hair thing, the Dani pauses are nothing compared to the time actually used by these male tennis players between points.

This is one thing I like about the WTA - people don't waste time between the points, and the games go at a nice pace. The men take such a long time extended their already best of 5 set matches.

And I always hated how when women throw a racquet on the ground it's because their bitchy or poor sports. Men do it and all the commentators like Brad Gilbert , Jimbo go on about personality or showmanship.

Umm Sharapova grunts really loud. I mean she can disguise how hard she is hitting the ball. Maria should not have let it get to her. If anything, she should have been nailing her second serves into Radwanska's body. That would've taught her to not move in. I'm sure Brad Gilbert would have agreed with Tracy. Gilbert is all about the mental aspects of the game. Aggie got into Maria's head. And as a result, she won the match. Maria will recover and learn from this match, just like all players have to do.
