First Petrova goes down, then Maria crashes out, u'd think Hingis would have a great chance of going deep, then she gets spanked off the court, and now Patty Schnyder? wtf is going on in Flushing Meadow's water?

I am pretty annoyed that Maria is out but there's nothing like a good upset. But the young girls are definitely breaking through here, four of them beat seeds today!

who said the US Open this year is boring? Tomorrow could get real intersting as well.

I wonder if Maria's loss affected Hingis & Schnyder's performance, maybe they were thinking too much about the possibility of making the grand slam tittle that they lost concentration:tape:

It were rather Vika and Tamira who thought: "I wanna beat high ranked player too, like Agi and Aga :awww:" :p

I expected Nadia and Patty to lose but I still wasn't happy. Martina's loss was very disappointing, especially after I thought she had such a big opening here.

The other one was a pleasure.

There were definitely a few surprises today, no doubt, but if the young guns were going to prevail you knew their best shot to do so would be in the bottom half. There's a reason that section of the draw was looked at as the weaker side and today it was fully exposed. I agree that it's nice to see different faces, but I still like the big names playing one another. Great opportunity and from where it stands now Chakvetadze, Kuznetsova, and Vaidisova all have a real shot at the finals.

Meanwhile it's business as usual in the top half of the draw. Hopefully the day of upsets ends and tomorrow it's back to business for the top seeds.

A new generation of young players is definately making their mark now. What we have seen in this tournament we will see increasingly next year. The 25 and over generation are going to find it much much harder next year. Over the next two years I expect to see three to five players winning their 1st slam. That won't leave a lot left for the older generation. Tennis will soon be in the hands of the likes of Paszek, Ivanovic, Radwanska, Szavay, Chakvetadze, Mirza and Jankovic.

Could very well be. Although I must admit I am hoping Vakulenko can at least get past Szavay and then into the semis. I really want a Vakulenko vs Radwanska semi. That would be awesome.

I agree that young guns will keep making noise from here on out, but I don't anything on this scale will happen anytime soon. We can't forget that dumb luck placed all the stronger players on the same side of the draw. The players that lost today, with the exception of Sharapova, are the top players that are the most volunerable. Even Kuznetsova fits that description. Regardless, it's fun to see who steps up and how they use this experience to take them to the next level.

I think Lindsay would love to be in the bottom half this year, she is a better player than ALL of the 8 players that are still in this wacky tournament, i guess she would make to the final, a mom finalist, then Henin would appear and spoil her title! :)
