So…

What is your opinion / perception of Yuri Sharapov walking out / ABANDONING his daughter just before she lost her serve to go 2-5 down?

TBH I feel sad for Maria. When she was scrambling her rags together, walking off in a hurry, it looked as though she was AFRAID. Maybe thinking about what Yuri was going to do to her say.

If you had a daughter, losing a match would you do the same? It was all so cold. It added the suspicion of SOME PEOPLE that it’s such behaviour from Yuri – that causes Maria to be so Psychotic on the court (when she is playing against nobodies).

Discuss :D

I'll take the lack of responses as a result of the absolute shock and disapproval at his doing so.

It was so sad wasn't it? Poor girl *sniff*

I agree, it was really weird. The man looks so cold and strict...
He is the one who made her, and he kinda made her dependent on him, so leaving the court when she needs him the most is pretty hard I think.

He is his coach for god's sake. Being able to accept his player/daughter's defeats is part of his job. What is he gonna do if her career goes downhill from now on (dont think it will happen...) ? Leave her and despise her??

Well, the match was practically over, so it just might been his last attempt to shock Maria to try her best before it's too late. On the other hand, if he did it becouse of anger, he can easily join Pierce/Dokic fathers in future.

I don't remember the year, but Venus is playing Martina at the US Open, two points I think from losing, Richard ups and walks out. But Venus wins the match. It's happened to the best.

Yuri had to leave to get the whip ready.. sharapova could be getting that beat down right now. LMAO.... Now if only justin henin lose I will be happy as i could care less who wins the US Open so long as it's not sharapova or henin

It's awful. He is supposed to be her coach, what coach walks out at that point in a match :help:
Also it's like admitting defeat, Aga still had to win another 2 or 3 points to take the match, and seeing her dad walk out I'm sure effected Maria too.

Yeah, too bad he's not there to support her till the end. He did the same in Australia. There's something weird about the Sharapov family. Absent mother. Crazy father. Sounds like a Shakespearian tragedy. :scared:

They just replayed the match, and at match point down they showed Maria looking up to the players box - TO EMPTINESS!

Yeah but, at least Venus had her mom and some other vocal women she could look up to. All maria had was an empty seat, with some empty bottles tossed around. :tape:

Richard is always up and down at tournaments. I recall that when the sisters first came on tour they said Richard gets to nervous so he has to leave sometimes. One of the commentators say that he'll walk around on the grounds for a while. I've also seen him leave and comeback which makes me think it is because he gets nervous.

Hmm. So Richard didn't just leave at the end of matches, if he had time to come back?

Well can we say the same about Yuri? I only ever seem him leave at the end of matches, and he did look pissed of scrambling his things, but who knows. :)

But i was suprised Sharapova denied he left in her interview. :speakles: :scared:

If she has enough braincells she should leave him. That's what I would do if my parent or another person who was supposed to support me left like he did. Pathetic behaviour....

Richard left the 2000 USOPEN semi as Venus was playing so badly. I can't remember the shot but it might have been a lob by hingis that Vee just slammed straight into the net. She stopped, smiled and her body was all hunched over, she looked really uninspired but in a cute way. Richard just up and left. Then shortly after we had the famous passing shot return off Hingis' overhead and the match changed momentum.

Anywho, the cameras showed Yuri packing his things, then they showed his empty seat. When asked in the press conference Maria said he was there the whole time. Maybe we got the wrong end of the stick here.

Yuri, Mr Russia, is a classless creep. He has done this before, and will do it again. Maria needs a new coach, before it is too late, as her game seems to be in decline. I am not sorry she lost, but I do feel a bit sorry for her.

Apparently he didn't leave, he just moved further back - possibly to get out of the camera's view so they couldn't get his reaction shots.

Whether or not he left, it didn't look good at all.

Yeah like others have said Richard Williams has done this too. I think they both expose themselves to be the terrible fathers that they are. I don't care what the daughters have to say, I see with my own eyes their actions and I think it's pathetic.

If I had a daughter playing tennis, I'd stick with her even if she lost 0-6 0-6.

It was such an exciting match - I was sooo pleased for Radwanska. Then I see that empty chair. Virginia Wade was commentatting at the time and she was genuinely shocked - said something like "That's awful". It made me actually feel sorry for Maria. Disrespectful to both players. Couldn't he just wait a couple more minutes till the end. I didn't like it.

I remember Richard Williams walked out in Venus vs Martina match in USO 2000 SF after Venus missed a simple overhead. Sometime it becomes too tough to handle when you see someone you love struggle. Venus that time responded by winning the match but Maria somehow could not turn the situation yesterday.

your Virginia Wade is blind stupid cow, since she's unable to see the person moving to another seat.

and even if Yuri did actually walk out, that would be a very relevant move - because his daughter just needs a hefty slap in the face like that.

I think it's pretty crappy. I think he only uses Maria as a bragging tool. When she's winning grand slams and such, he's up in the air, praying to Mary and all that good stuff. But when she's losing horribly, he'll up and leave, as if he doesn't want to be associated with her.

Child, you are NAIVE. Did you see him sitting 3 seats/rows back? The man uped and left. Why would he move 3 rows back, the players boxes don't have a roof or shaded area.

Going by sky sports footage, they showed him packing up his papers, but he left behind almost finished but not emptry drink bottles. You should take those if your just shifting back. And the sky commentators, and Virginia wade, and an awful lot of people are saying he left. Also, he has abandoned her BEFORE at other tournaments. Your view is in the minority - face the truth. You AND Maria!

But anyway, we'll leave it at that.

Richard did the same thing to Venus in the US Open 2000. Venus was down 5-3 in the third set.

Only difference was that Venus rallied and won the last 4 games in the third to beat Martina and then prevail in the finals vs Lindsay.

It was definitely an insensitive thing to do. It would've been understandable if Maria wasn't trying. But she was, and it just wasn't her day. She had to deal with that soon-to-be horrible serve and a very good opponent.

I don't think it's safe to presume on what this really means about their relationship. It could be anything from he was too tense to see his daughter losing to "he'll kick her ass after they've done". However, Yuri has always looked like someone who wants to live his daughter's acheivements rather than support her.
