I think Kuznetsova can only be #3 ! I am not sure 100% though.

If Kuznetsova does better than Jankovic she will be No.2.

Without last year USO points (at the beginning of the tournament):
Jankovic - 3115
Kuznetsova - 3080

Another "Welcome to Top-10, Bartoli" thread, i guess...

No. If Kuznetsova goes further than Jankovic, she will be #2. Which would be weird anyway, since her year has just been OK to me.

Kuznetsova is a Slam champion and runner-up. Jankovic can become the first No.2 in WTA Tour history without Slam final in her resume.

Don't you forget about Ana?
If she wins the whole thing then she's number 2!!!

But it looks like it's gonna be Sveta. She certainly has the easiest draw.
I now can only laugh about the bottom half.

Scharapowa's defeat is certainly very good for Jelena. :)

 another premature thread title but at least it's more correct now. However, there's still the possibility of Ana taking it all into her own hands, right? Still, it's nice that JJ's hard work has given her the inside track for #2, I hope she can get there.

I think Kuzy will lose to Hingis in 4rd round and JJ will lose to Venus in quarters... so congrats JJ!!!

Yep ;) Only if Maria made the final, then Ana couldn't be 2nd.
Now she can!

Not true. Andrea Jaegar reached No.2 in the rankings in the summer of 1981, and didn't reach a Slam final until Roland Garros in 1982.

so how many ranking points is Shalala gonna loose?

Also, I think Chaky has a slight outside shot at #2, but unrealistic.

700 (last year's win) - 90 (third round) = 610 :)
She gained some points in San Diego and LA though so her loss is not as hard as it COULD have been...

Minimum to #3...if Sveta wins today, to #4. Ana will tie Maria in points with a semifinal appearance, but should grab #3 due to better results in slams & Tier I's. Chaky could surpass Maria if she wins the whole thing.

Poova
Sep 1st, 2007, 09:35 PM
Maria can go as low as #6. If Kuznetsova makes the QF, Ivanovic makes the final and Chakvetadze wins the whole tournament, she falls to #6. All these things would need to happen for her to fall that low though.

I think so anyway, I might have made a mistake though. :o

Well, crazy things happen lately in Women tennis.
If she wins in the final against Venus for example and Sveta won't reach the Semis then she's number 2.
The only unrealistic thing I see is that she beats Venus in the final, but she can really get there.

I agree Chaky could get to the final...in fact I'm kind of thinking she just may. But even if she wins, it's still not totally in her control like it is for Ana, Sveta, & Jelena. That's why I think it's still somewhat unrealistic.

Ana needs the final and Jelena the SF. If you believe the people here, they can't beat Venus for sure.
Sveta needs a SF too. It's right that a lot of things has to happen, but each of them are not really unrealistic (except for Anna winning the final).

I know, but the point is that Ana, Sveta or JJ can win the final and be #2 for sure. Anna needs help to do that. In any case, Sveta still has the inside track with the draw, though Chaky did gain a lot of ground with Maria's loss.

I so hope this will happen jelena worked hard throught the seson, also would be nice to see Ana there too (and thus with the US open trophy too), but Kuznetsova just has such an easy draw here, but I'm sure she'll find a way to screw it all up..

1 GS , 1 GS Final , 1 victory in the fifth GS (Miami)

Sorry, my bad :smash:
I was so sure she did it in 1982 that I hadn't checked it out.

The only people who deserve the no.2 ranking are the Williams sisters but tennis is based on who plays every week rather than who the better player is.

OK so if we'll go by what players do in OTHER years then I think Sveta should be ranked around #150 behind players like Margaret Court, Steffi Graf, and Gabriela Sabatini.

OMG  It seems that something is really wrong with the ranking system
In other hand its not Jankovic fault that the other players act like a primadonnas and dont play 3 months coz they are bite by a mosquito or coz of broken nail ...

I don't think there's too much wrong with the ranking system. People are talkink about scenarios that haven't happened yet. Some of the scenarios here most likely won't happen. And even if we do we may end up with a new #2 for only a very short time anyway.

The scenario that will definitely raise eyebrows is if Venus or Serena win the USO. 2 grand slams in a year and not even #2. There will be a lot of threads if that should happen.

Any other scenario in which any of the 4 contenders win the USO or in which JJ or Ana make the finals overcoming Justine, Venus, Serena and each other - and you definitely get a very "worthy" #2.

Any other scenario in which none of the contenders makes the final - and let's say Justine wins the USO. Then you you get a #2 by default IMO. Someone who I wouldn't think of as a #2 but who I would struggle to find anyone else more "worthy".
