View Full Version : Venus playing like the old Venus

She is playing tremendously well. If I were on her side of the draw (I'm looking at you Ivanovic, Justine and especially Serena), I would be practicing my ass off. She looks almost unstoppable right now against Bondarenko. I'm picking her as the USO winner. Both her backhand and forehand are looking very strong. She's coming into the net to finish off points. She's even slicing and approaching the net. I'm scared for the other players.

Bondarenko isn't that impressive IMO.

She has played really well against Bondarenko (from what I've been watching anyway) and will be a contender for sure. But I don't like to judge the top players until they get into the second week, as most cruise through.

Venus looks like and is playing like a '07 Miami Serena. maybe even better.
 but true

Bondarenko is just a top 30 player.

John Weirtheim (sp?) called her a future top 10 player in his USO preview. :tape:

Venus did play great tennis. :yeah:

I'm sure Bondarenko is a fine player, but she's not nearly aggressive enough to trouble an in-form Venus. Ivanovic is a different story. Venus' serve is far more suspect on HC than it is on grass and I'm sure Ana is going to take advantage of Venus' second serve. And if Ana serves like I saw her serving today it's going to be a great match.

I wish I had some coverage.....

Exciting 4th round match next, pity they had to draw each other so early...

Gag me. How I wish Werthless would go away.

Venus hit some fantastic shots but i still think it wasn't her best tennis, she still has more gears to go, which is actually a promising thing for her.

Her attitude is alot better than it has been the past three years. She's not being so hard on herself and she's not getting down when she makes an error.

I have to agree. She has really impressed me lately. She is back at the top of her game, and she is also my pick to win it all.
Not original, but I am predicting a Venus - Sharapova final.
I dont think Serena will get to the semis.

Exactly, a top 30 player should be able to hold serve more than once during a match on a hardcourt.

do players like ana and maria ever serve that great when venus is on the other side of the net ;). both will need to serve well because we know what ana can do to weak 2nd serves and venus' return was spot on tonite even on 1st serves especially on the backhand side.

Is anyone noticing that Venus is actually running around some backhands to hit forehands??

That's the sign of confidence. Go VENUS!! :D

I think she's making way too many errors and struggling too much on her serve.

Now's a good time to tighten up your game, Vee. It's only gonna get tougher from hereon.

I agree. Bondarenko had a few looks on Venus's serve in the 2nd because of her sloppiness.

Venus is looking so sharp, hitting so offensivley, looking so eager.....
I see Serena reach that level in this tournament so far only when her back is agains the wall but the impressive thing about Venus it's that it is eagerness and aggression from the first point to the last!

So far she is my pick for the title unless Serena steps it up.

If anyone can go from playing dsmally against morigami to annlating maria likein a pasce of 24 hours, venus can. She nees to make hat transformation before sunday coz ana had been pretty impressive.

doesn't mean she can't go from anhilating bondarenko to hopeless errorfest against ivanovic in the same amount of time either does it?

Venus played very well, but Alona just doesn't challenge the very top players. Ana, JJ, & Justine have all beaten her in similarly dominant fashion this year. The gap between the top 20 and #21 Alona is pretty big.

Venus doesn't usually have errorfests against top power players(at least not lately). If anything, Ana is a great matchup for Venus on Sunday and a perfect way to get into a rhythm(see Pierce Wimby 2005, Maria Wimby 2007) ready for the next few matches if she defeats Ivanovic.

Eh. Didn't see the match tonight, but Vee's 2nd round was pretty ugly. Something like 1 ace and 7 DF. Will just depend on which Vee shows up vs. Ana. If it is the one vs. Olaru, she won't win.

I just said this on another thread but wanted to repeat it here. My boyfriend was the one who thought of it. Venus looked like she was in "bullet time" tonight.

It's now the second week and this is where the "real" tournament starts on the women's side. No more qualifiers or scrubs bowing out producing lopsided matches and I can't wait for some intense and competitive tennis. I haven't been impressed with anyone so far, and think Serena has played the worst out of all the top players. However, I will say that Venus looks confident which is important regardless of how many errors she hits.

I'm sticking with a Venus/Sharapova final.

Right now the only ones i can imagine beating Venus are Jankovic and Henin, those are the only ones that can retrieve her shots, and generate good pace on their own.
But indeed she seems very focused, hitting with autority and making more winners than errors, i really expect her to trash Ana in the next round, i just don´t see her running down Venus shots enough to worry her.

yeah.... I picked Venus to win US OPEN if she won Wimbledon back when she lost to Jankovic at the French. Im still sticking with she is the front runner; however, this next round will be really telling. I think she'll win regardless.... but if its two easy sets Venus will probably walk to the title... if Ivanovic can push her she might have trouble...

I am really impressed with this win though Bonderanko is ranked 21 and i didnt expect venus to win so handlely...

Venus IS playing like the old Venus! She looked terrific tonight....so aggressive and the forehand was AWESOME. I think she really will get to the final---I don't see Ana as ANY competition at this point. I think Serena is not close to Venus'current form, and if the two did meet in that projected semi-final....Venus to win all the way.

I fully expect that Venus WILL be in the final, based on her form this week; I also think that the W-W semifinal is unlikely, cause poor Serena is not going to get to the semi with her current issues--someone will put her out before then,I fully predict.

Now the final is probably going to be Venus againist the Siberian tigeress.....who has a cakewalk draw! But I see Venus taking this one home to add one more trophy to the family mantle....wow---15 slams in one family---I hope to see it happen next week!

I didn't see the first set = but heard that was AMAZING. But i'm not sure in what i saw of the second set. That game when Venus got broken :o Some really good stuff, good attitude, but i'd feel easier if her excecution was more consistent. She missed some easy shots.. but it was better than the round before... *fingers crossed* she keeps improving round after round.

Ivanovic is playing very well, but as we all know top-tennis is also mental. Is Ivanovic mentally the toughest? I'm not so sure about that one.....

Venus is playing great but her 4th round will be the determining factor if shes ready to win this because she hasn't played a tough opponent yet and been tested in a match shes either going to storm through the field all the way to the finals and win like Wimbledon 05 or she is going out next round

No it isn't. Venus us playing much better than the old Venus. More experienced, more mature, and a better player.

i kinda feel like the tournament depends on this next match also... If Venus wins it she might storm to the title....
