Really just a sloppy match where the winners from both players were heavily outweighed by the UE's
Serena should have served out the 1st set a 5-3 and her forehand is still lacking a little conviction, but it did get better as the match went on and hit a great winner a 5-5 30-15.A match like this would have done serena good but Serena will NEED to step it up from here. Still, a win is a win

A much more competitive match than expected. It wasn`t a thing of beauty, but Serena did good enough to get the win. :clap2: Hopefully she can improve her play. I was impressed with Vera, not only with her play, but also that she kept her composure throughout the match.

Even though more UFE than in her first 2 rounds I still think she played better. Much more aggressive and near the end of the match there were flashes of the real Serena. Just brief flashes but hopefully in the next round she can continue to step it up. Plus her ROS was soo much better than her first two rounds I saw glimpses of the true Serena return:hearts:

Vera :worship: great match after having so much time off. She really acquitted herself and if she can continue to play she'll be back in the top 15 for sure.

I don't think it was such a bad match. A lot of hard hitting baseline rallies and great defense. Error count was high but that was partly attributed to the great defense from both.

I was shocked to see Vera hitting the ball so well after such a long layoff. I hope she can get back to her form from the beginning of the year.

I didn't think the match was as bad as everyone else. Although the stats say otherwise... but then I think part of it is that both played great defense.

It was really entertaining... but I agree Justine will kick Serena's ass if she plays like today. Vera doesn't really have enough weapons. Still good effort from her. :D

I predict Serena will have all kinds of trouble against Marion though... Marion is really going to run Serena around.

People saying Serena played badly are beingoverly cynical, always the complaints that she doesn't give her opponents enough credit, it seems most posters aren't doing likewise. Zvonereva played an amazing tennis match, I'm sure she would have taken a set off any other player in the draw, Serena started slow, after that it was a performance, as Simon Reed said, made her the favourite (in some peoples minds) for the title. I think Vera just played Serena into form, and if she didn't do the full job we know Marion will, not to say serena will defo win, but if she does do.

Serena played well when it mattered. She like Djokovic just refuses to lose big points and thats what gets her through. She'll be OK with Bartoli but against Henin she'll need to step it up a gear and im sure she will!!!

Well, I know what you're trying to say, but bored? nah, she isnt at that level at the moment.

She does use these matches not to just bagel, but to really experiment, play herself into form, looking for lines, net height etc. (not many people notice this) V. did the same thing at Wimby.

But the added nonsense and drama today eas just too much for me. I also hope the gasping for air in the 2nd was just improv acting. Otherwise Justine will eat sushi in the QF. (just make the rally last > 3 shots)

Loving the 2007 Zvonareva - okay she lost but she really made Serena earn that one, and the Aussie champ accordingly stepped up to claim it - even if at times she looked like she didn't want to have to.

It's a shame that injury decimated the middle of Vera's season.

Meanwhile, of the two Williams sisters, I can't help thinking Venus is looking the stronger at this point, though at this early stage it could prove meaningless. This is about the time in a tournament where both (if they need to) start to step it up as the second week nears. I don't think Venus needs to do much, but Serena does have a bit of work to do yet.

Esp the 2nd set was great :D Both were running from left to right in almost every point. Bepa's FH was quite good and she looked really nice. Only once I saw her disappointed with her game. All in all it was nice to watch.

I was shocked to see Vera hitting the ball so well after such a long layoff. I hope she can get back to her form from the beginning of the year.

This assessment is more on par with my own. It wasn't the cleanest match, but all in all it was a good match from both players. I think a lot of times we get too bogged down in those statistics, which most of the time aren't a real reflection of the quality of play. These stats don't take into account forced errors which impact the positive play from a player causing an error- and that's just one of many gripes I have with our stats in tennis.

Vera was the one early round match that worried me most. I actually think she'll have a much easier time with Bartoli. Serena does what she needs to and if you don't know anything about her, the one thing you should know by now is that one round has nothing to do with the next. A brilliant first round doesn't guarantee a brilliant second round, and a horrid third round doesn't mean a horrid fourth round is to follow.

One match at a time, let's keep the wins coming!

Main positive is that Serena got through, fought hard after being tested HARD. Her sideways movement is not so strong though, and Justine might exploit that - but Serena when she really needed to, her level of play went UP! When she played like that... i don't see anyone stopping her .. only question mark is can she call on that form sooner rather than later in matches?

Olórin
Sep 1st, 2007, 12:34 PM
People talk about Serena's sideways movement being tested a lot. But it always has been. What Serena does is get the "Lindsay Davenport early strike" in 9 times out of 10, to put her in control of the point. When she's doing this she has the best serve and return in the game. Problem for her atm is she's only doing this 2 times out of 10 on the return.

ok from what I've read, Serena was not at all relaxed, I hate when Serena is uptight - remember her match against Callens in Wimbly 2002. LOVE her fighting spirit, but sometimes she gets worked up a lil too much....

Well...hands down to Vera Zvonareva!! Yes, she lost; yes, she wasn't able to take the match to a decider but c'mon...she gave it all out...it was one of those matches in which your opponent is, quite simply, better than you!!

Credit to Zvonareva, though: in seeing yesterday's match, i was having flashbacks of that amazing game she played (and won) against venus in roland garros some years ago!! Was it just me that got that impression??

Serena...in my opinion, her run in the u.s open will end at the ends of the great Justine!

I watched it last night and the most exciting match in the women's draw by far.

Althought I always thought Vera was an excellent player, I never really liked her due to her emotional self-torments.

However, last night, I cheered for her. She had upbeat attitude and quietly working the match. Apart from few expression here and there, it was the most positive I've seen her. I just thought it would be such a shame if she lost and went back to crying baby again. As much as I was hoping for a Justine-Serena match, I did wish Vera to win and prove herself how good a player she really is.

Oh well, nevermind Vera! Keep up with the good work!

It was Vera's 1st tournament since green clay. From reading her diary, I didn't think she would be ready until mid September.
I thought Vera played better and better as the match went on, and I wished she could have forced a 3rd set.
She's beaten Serena 62 63, she's beaten Ivanovic twice this year, beaten Sharapova 3 times.
Vera likes pace, and when Serena's not on, Vera is very capable of beating her.
But not without match play for 4 months. Not yesterday.

Vera, amazing! Haven't seen her play so well for a long time

Credit to Serena's tennis skills and her major titles, but c'mon!!!
Haven't seen someone behave like that! misbehave,to say...

What was that?! Is she so uncivilized,or on cocaine? Or both?!

Although JJ loses every time she plays Justine, I wish Ju-Ju sent Serena where she belonged...
Justine is such a lady for S.
Maybe someone can help her :awww: :help:
What a disrespect...

 Is she uncivilized because she screams come on after winning tight points and pumping herself up. How she chooses to carry on does not make her uncivilized. It was a tight match, and she wanted to win badly.

Let me tell you something BITCH, you better get your dirty ass off of the internet and go learn some English. Ugh. I wish they would just put all non-English speaking people on an island and blow them the fuck up. :fiery:
