I am so disappointed Alize lost. She was doing everything in this match.
Great defense by Jankovic though, she was more patient - but Cornet has a lot of time to learn that.

Amazing match indeed. I was watching it on a screen and Zvonareva - Williams on the other, and this was absolutely so much more enjoyable to watch. Alizé's style of play is so beautiful. And she makes it work! :) We'll hear about her a lot.

Oh yeah and she plays pretty well too. I loved the dropshot winner near the end, Jankovic didn't even realise what had happened.

A few words about JJ...another up & down performance, some brilliance some passivity, but she toughed it out and that's all that matters. She was playing well outside from serving.

On to Alize. What a talent! I saw her play Venus at RG but she didn't look anything quite like this. Aggressive, playing awesome defense, playing AMAZING shots. Really, she was the more entertaining player than JJ today, and that's unusual imo. She'll be a top player very soon, I'm convinced. She has everything she needs to do that, just needs a little experience. Well done.

68?!? I thought she was only 17! Damn, she looks fiiine for her age.

Just kidding:lol: !

Alize has a future ahead of her. Great consistency. I'm sure her own rallying abilities must have given Jelena touble, since Jelena's the one used to being the backboard.

Fitness will be key for Alize -- basedon the little I saw of her at the French, she needs to work on her endurance, especially since she has a game prone to long battles when she faces the likes of Jelena.

Very impressive showing by her, though.:)

What was going on with Jelena's groundies? For most of the match it looked like she was steering them or pushing them rather than hitting through them - they were just floating around and Cornet was having little trouble getting to them and cracking them. I thought Jelena played much too safe for too much of the match - power took a total backseat to placement, but the Hingis story shows that you need a good measure of both. When she did finally uncork, she turned it in her favour. She needs to hit a little more freely, both off the serve and the groundies, she does not get enough easy points on her serve. Considering the power-heavy top half of the draw, she's going to wind up looking ineffective and irrelevant if she's not careful.

Nevertheless, she hung in and fought and got it done in the end. I'm just not sure she can expect bigger names than Cornet to give her that opportunity.

Meanwhile, Cornet played a terrific match, on the whole, showing she's coming on in leaps and bounds. She's going to be a handful in future.

It's more a personality trait than anything I think. JJ admitted she thought she wouldn't get much of a challenge from Cornet, so she played passively. It haunted her throughout the match. The real problem was her serve though...she always seems to save serving her best for "bigger" challenges. She could've used it today.

A slightly foolish attitude from JJ, one which could have cost her. I can't help wondering if she thought much the same at Wimbledon against Bartoli, and got the shock of her life.

Still, she got it done. I'd give her a passing grade. But I'd add a note that she now needs to start doing better if she wants to look like a contender.

Not even slightly foolish...she called it a "big mistake," rightly so. At least in Bartoli's case she can say she'd played her a few weeks before and was basically untested, so expecting the same again. I often wonder why players don't feel they have to scope out the competition...I hope that's something JJ adds to her match preparation.

scoobsuk
Sep 1st, 2007, 08:17 AM
Then again we could say the same for Justine, who pulverised Bartoli at Eastbourne and didn't know what hit her at Wimbledon.

But yes, JJ nearly paid in spades for her complacency today.

David Barker
Sep 1st, 2007, 08:38 AM
The whole point is that a year or so ago JJ would have lost this - Alize played really aggressively and Jelena still won - wonderful rallies and very high standards for alot of the match (hard to say the same for the umpire......what was that time violation about? Cornet was fighting for air too....)

Well done JJ - having seen some of Bammer v Dementieva I think JJ will win straight sets.....good she has had such a test - I think it helps her chances.

Looking forward to seeing Cornet again - as someone said, a real breath of fresh air!

You can say just WOW! at Alize's improvment lately. it was no long ago that she has entered the top 100, and now she even go on and do troubles to a top 3 player! she will be in the top 10, that is for sure!
There were some campersentces to AnnaC, but I don't see them, Cornet is now much better than Chaky has been in her age, and she got a different game, more aggresive one!

Alizé said that she tried to hard and chased everything down because she didn't want to look like an idiot (or rather, a boob/doudoune ) by loosing 6-0 6-1 which is funny. She also said that she didn't want to win because then she would have too many points to defend next year.

Also, just showing again how much class JJ has, she said that Jelena told her she played really well "at least 12 times" and even Snez came and told her that in the future she would be a really strong player!!
