.............for her horrid results/letdowns this past year by blitzing everyone so far at the U.S Open. Such amazing and dominating play. And it's got nothing to do with how weak her opponents are....most of the winners she hit against Casey and her first round opponent would be winners against anyone on the tour. Good to see that she's finally back. :)

'blitzing everyone so far' shes played to nobodys who give her short balls and serves and dont move her about or over power her you cant judge her form from the 2 matches shes played as there was nothing to play against if she gets a bread stick or 2 against radwanska then i'd be impressed as she can move great and make sharapova move!

How much is she improving by?

In the Australian Open second round, she beat Anastasia Rodionova, ranked 100 at the time, 6-0 6-3.

In the second round of the French, she beat Jill Craybas, ranked 73 at the time, 6-2 6-1.

In the second round of Wimbledon, she beat Severine Bremond, ranked 37 at the time, 6-0 6-3.

At the US Open, she beat the 90th ranked player 6-1 6-0.

She aways beats early round opponents with lopsided scores.

she peaks too early IMO

She looks like shes playing well because no one has moved her around and are just giving her mid-court balls. They girl yesterday hit a few mis-hits and moved her around 3 or 4 times and shara just looked like a mess again. I think Radwanka has a good chance. I think maria has already peaked.

Isn't this typical for her? Play good in the early rounds, get owned by a Willams in the second week.

And the 51st ranked player by the same scoreline, let's be fair.
She aways beats early round opponents with lopsided scores.
She's gone 3 sets in the first round of a slam 4 times since 2004.

She's playing well...but rarely struggles with early round opponents (the exception being AO 1R).

Sharapova isn't playing the type of players yet that can beat her that won't happen until at least the fourth round. Now I am not sure Peer can beat her or has the game to but I think Viadasova has the potential to really push Sharapova.

She's playing nobody who would give her trouble anyway. Even if she was playing like crap she'd win in two sets against both of her opponents that shes played

Does it really matter how she won, or who she has played. 2 wins either way. Just remember guys she has played 2 professionals, they are professionals. Funny how you guys seem to forget that the 2 girls Sharapova beat would double bagel any of you.

I'm a guy who plays moderately well. I highly doubt the 90th ranked women's player can double bagel me.

And secondly, there's a reason why women like the type she's played are called journeywomen.

moderately well? Well being a man I would call it unfair, but I still think the 90th rank women in the world could beat your ass any day of the week. Sorry chief, but moderately well doesn't cut it.

I didn't know 90th ranked players were journey women, lol.

There's a difference between being beaten and being double bagelled.

Regardless, Ryan Sweeting, a guy who's still playing challenger level tournies, beat Sharapova in straight sets. Do you think the girl who Sharapova lost just one game to can whoop a 4.0 male player's ass?

If you need to toot your horn by beating up on a woman, hey darko be my guest. This is a women's tennis forum, when I say a double bagel I usually mean women v women, or man v man if I was talking ATP.

Sorry if I don't think man v women in a tennis match. Last time I checked their wasn't a league for those.

So only women can appreciate a WTA discussion board? That's kind of sexist.

Maria winning easy early round matches is typical Sharapova. We still don't know how she will do when she plays tough players. She is playing well, but that should be expected.

Tennisstar86
Aug 31st, 2007, 05:34 PM
Should she be tested by these players? no. I would hope not..... Its pretty easy to smack a ball into the corner thats short in the court and sits up for you. once maria beats someone with this scoreline with some depth and power on there shots... then i'll be impressed..

When she won Wimbledon, she steamrolled her early rounds opponents. Same fact last year in Flsuhing. Get your facts straight before vomitting BS, next time.

if you feed a ball basher short balls they are going to look very dominant

true if anyother player fed her these same balls, then yes the winniers would probably stillbe winners
but the better players aren't going to give her anywhere near as many short balls, and they will also be capable of attacking her, and moving her around

Give Maria an opponant who can hit 2 balls in a row in the court and it won't be that easy.

masha is playing well
but is she playing well enough
we will know when she plays vaidisova in 4th round
anna c is pwned against her so no hopes there
only real opposition she has in the finals and she will win easily if the others are tired surviving the group of death

She playing well right now, if her serve gets stronger and she gets a higher %of 1st serves in, she has a great shot at the title.

I would like to see how she does against tougher opponents until I say that she is back in last years form though.

People seem to forget that hardly any seeds have played anyone good. It's not just Maria... Justine's scorelines are convincing but she hasn't really played anyone either.

I always say you can't tell how Maria is playing until she moves along in the draw.

Yes she's unbeatable to the ones she just pummeled but I never believed it. You can't.

Her dominant intimidating play was only because she was playing nobodies. Going all out, dressed in red, screaming at the top of her lungs, fist pumping like a warrior, arguing with the umpire... doing all that madness while facing players that that couldn't get to the ball if it decided to have a picnic and sleep before bouncing away.

A little bit of a test and she fails. The first person who would not be intimidated by her shoulders, and paniced screams caused her to MELT-DOWN!
