View Full Version : The crowd is getting tired of Maria on at nite

Foxy
Aug 31st, 2007, 12:37 AM
This crowd was so quiet and the people basically sat their with their arms folded.

They want to see someone other than Maria. They should have put Kutznetsova on tonight because she had a more challenging game and the players want to see some exciting tennis where the top players are being challenged at a minimal.

They need to quit shoving Maria down these peoples throats.

I hope the 3rd Round Night Match from this half will be Hingis-Azarenka and then maybe Masha-Vaidi in Round 4.

Maybe because it was a boring match? :p I think Hingis should get the night session on Saturday. Her match with Azarenka could be a good match, but it will probably be Maria again...

I'm not sure showing Kuznetsova choking a set away is better that showing Maria hitting tons of winners.

But I agree they should put someone else. It would have been a good time to introduce Chakvedatze to the New York crowd.

I really dont think so because if Masha-Nicole happens it would be deserving a Night Match and i dont think they give Masha 4 Night Matches in a row.

Funny, it looked to me like people were really enjoying the match, about as much as they could with a 6-1, 6-0 blow-out.

Maria can't help it if she's blasting them off the court. It's normal for most of the top players in the first two rounds.

Is seeing Serena twice shoving HER down our throats? What about Venus and Justine?

As a spectacle this match against Dellacqua sucked worse than the one against Vinci. The schedulers should have given someone else a chance at the night session. I know Maria is defending champ and I don't know what influence TV and the sponsors have on their decisions but this was a total mismatch and you could have predicted it wouldn't be a thrilling encounter. Great for the Maria fans who want to see a convincing win but for everyone else who just wants to see some entertaining tennis (including those who paid to be in the stadium tonight) it's not so good.

At least Friday looks more exciting.

Serena's matches are exciting because she's not playing that well and her opponents are able to keep it close. It's not Maria's fault that she's playing well. Should she throw a few games just to make it interesting for the crowd?

They showed the Sisters on the first night, then Maria on the second. They should have showed Justine on yesterday, and Kutznetsova on tonight, or Chakavadasky (mispell).

There is enough women to rotate just like they do with the men.

The USTA and Larry Scott are doing women's tennis no favors. I have no doubt they could have put a more competitive match on center court for this time slot. I was so bored. I tried to get something out of this, but it was hopeless.

Why are they so intent on showing the same few people when there are so many others that are talented, and so many other match-ups that make tennis actually look enticing?

hmm i think that maria's popularity was, not overrated but, overdramatized. They thought of her as like a goddess who everyone loves but as the figures show, a williams sister is more popular. Its time for a change because she not bringing many more people than someone like martina hingis would. The problem is obviously the fact that there's not a lot of big names in the bottom half with the most popular: venus, serena, henin, janko and ana being in the top, she's the only one who can sell:shrug: its the stupid draw's fault anyway. Meh

Maria haters always finding something to complain about. Gosh Maria maybe next time you should let your opponent win a set, then maybe she'll have enough confidence to pull off an upset or make it a good match. Sorry guys but the tennis players are not out there for the fans. We make their life a possibility, but this is what they do for a living. Maria plays to win, period! If Serena had trounced her opponent 6-1, 6-0 last night there wouldn't be a complaint. Only thing we'd have to endure is all the love about Serena playing so well and looking great out there. Grow up people, stop bitching, and get a life.

They aren't getting tired of Maria, it's just hard to get involved in a 6-1/6-0 match. Dellacqua wasn't ever a challenge to her.
Blake/Santoro is already one set apiece. Much more exciting for the crowd. The second night match is always much fuller as well.

Not really. The Federer beatdown of Roddick at the AO semis had the crowd oohing and awing all throughout. Same with the AO 07 women's final. Same with the USO final between Fed and Hewitt.

Conversely, a match that goes the distance (like Nadal's last match) can sometimes be utter crap.

What the blue hell are you talking about? I wasn't criticizing Maria in my post. I didn't call the match boring. I haven't even SEEN the match yet.

And I have never, at any point, said I dislike Maria. I may dislike things she says or does, but I dislike things that my favorite players say or do also. And it's pretty hard to dislike someone Ive never met before.

Put, back to the matter at hand: A poster said it's hard for crowds to get into matches with lopsided scores. I said that's not true, and gave examples. What exactly was offensive about what I said?

You can't compare seeing a Federer-Roddick match or a Serena-Maria match with seeing Sharapova destroy Dellacqua. They are pretty much the four biggest names in tennis right now. No matter what the score, people will be interested.

Quite the contrary. She has to beat Aga Radwanska first. And it won't be piece of cake,I may assure you.

Exactly. Well knowing who the threadstarter is, no surprise. Anything to bring down Maria.

I was there tonight. Who else was? Was the threadstarter? There was nothing to really get all giddy about because Maria was killing her opponent. The difference in ability was overly obvious. It wasn't really a match but an exhibition for Maria. And somehow this translates to the crowd being tired of Maria? Yeah, let's forget about how one-sided it was because the opponent wasn't able to challenge her. Let's pin it all down on Maria. When she challenged that obviously unfair call you mean? True maybe, there are always idiots at every grand slam who boo challenges from anyone.

:yeah: to Maria for sticking up for herself, though - she was right to protest the call.

frontier is a moron. They were booing the call. The very next point, Maria hit a winner to take the game and the crowd gave their applause.

The week 1, Williams, Sharapova, Henin beat-downs are dreadful prime-time bores. I'm not blaming any of these great players - it's just the way it is. Last night's Maria spectacle, reminded me of the Serena v Venezuelan player (can't remember name) full-house beatdown at Wimbledon recently. Rarely do the top seeds get their serve broken, let alone a tie-break or a third set. Same with Federer's first week matches: souless mismatches played in near silence.

Give me three error-strewn, drama-filled sets of Pin v Safina any time.

We need to see Maria's day dress so her 3rd round will probs be in the day and her 4th round match vs Vaidisova will be at night.

1- She doesn't decide if she plays day or night.
2- She won't lose a set to please the crowd, she's here to win.
3- If her opponents don't challenge her, for sure you will have bagels.

I have a feeling Martina might get the next night match. Azarenka v. Hingis is appealing.

SFExactly. I think it's gonna be a night match too. Might be a good one as well.
