An odd match. Hingis played a good first set, but kind of her lost her way in the second. At 4-5, however, she refocused to close the match out at 7-5.

Strange match. Hingis was hitting a lot of :weirdo: shots, some poor approaches, ridiculous drop-shots etc... dare I say it, but she seemed to be using her opponent as a kind of practice barometer. In the end, when she needed to tighten up her game, she sure did... the last three games were vintage Hingis.

Overall she played very average tennis, but the practice against someone with such a big serve and forehand is valuable. Martina should have a straight-foward win in the third round.

Aug 30th, 2007, 06:24 PM
She played pretty well the last 3 games, was able to move the ball around, show variety with drops, lobs and volleys.
But that first serve! What happened? I think she was averaging 85mph on her first. She really needs to put some effort there.

I feel Hingis has in her to hit much harder first serves. She just gets lazy during the course of the match. Could be attributable to fitness.

Didn't like how she lost 3 games in a row, but great that she managed to win the next 3. Moved well throughout the match. Lotsa improvement required before the next round against Azarenka. But a win is a win, and this is an improvement from last year! Go, Martina!

And great thread title!! Best one of the tournament! ;)

Aug 30th, 2007, 06:29 PM
Martina went back into just putting in first serves during the start of the second set. She was content to start the rally off. She was enterprising with the drop shots and net approaches (that was good to see) but was unsuccessful for the most of the second set. She thought maybe to try out some shots but Parmentier made some great winners. Hingis somewhat got stuck in a hole. She did refocus by 4-5, 0-30.

Hopefully she can focus the entire match on the next round. :)

Positive point : she already has done better than last year. *sarcastic* The 1st set wasn't that great but yeah she did her job but the 2nd set : 3 times broken , played by times awfully but at the other side Parmentier took the chances she had. Martina finaly won the match but I expect much better from her against Azarenka. Winning matches without playing that well : a sign ? Who knows. But Martina, start believing in yourself back, ffs.

No, it's not really a fluke. Martina's has great form on her serve but if she tried to serve 100+ on every serve her shoulder would break, LOL. She just isn't built for that, so she mixes it up. She is also not match fit remember. Hopefully it will be a bit better in the next rd. ;)

If your back is hurting you, you're not going to hit harder serves. Hingis's serves are slower but they're not usually 75 MPH first serve. She played as well as she had to--the backhand down the line was great. She'll pick it up when she has to next round

A sad day for women's tennis?

Get a grip! You're talking about one of the game's legends so show a bit of respect.

Hingis was never about just a serve - she has a complete game and uses all elements to win. She is still a joy to watch and has so much respect within the profession and by fans, who actually appreciate her game which is different to the majority of the ball bashing clones on the WTA at the moment.

And one could argue Hingis was as strong a factor (if not stronger) in terms of the evolution of the game than the Williams sisters. She was a child prodigy, burst onto the scene, had incredible success as a 16 and 17 year old and demonstrated consistency to a level which had never been seen before. Wasn't enough just to hit the ball hard to beat her, women then needed to be more athletic, more precise and more consistent themselves.

And while we're talking about sad days for women's tennis. A women who is so selective in the tournaments she plays (they tend to only be grand slams these days), to be able to just waltz into a tournament and win it... to me that's not sending great messages for the WTA.

excuse me, but we all have a right to make choices. If the williams sisters can win a grand slam without playing any other tournament, then let it be. if they don't enjoy playing in certain tournaments, why should they? to me, a player who plays 30 tournaments a year to reach top 10 should be ashamed. yes, you two, jankovic and bartoli.

bla bla, for the record, i do like hingis tennis, but lets not get are panty's TO wet. Hingis princess day's ARE over, yeah she can hit the ball clean, and she is smart on the court.

But i'm not talking about that smartypants, i'm talking about her serve. WHy in godsname you allways bring up the sista's? I'm talking about hingis not the sisters, but if you really want to go down that path WELL go ahead.
It's allways, the same crap, the sista's this and that. Get over it.

Hingis serve is shitty if she want's to become a GS Champion. She needs a better serve. She is never gonna win slam, ever again if she have such a shitty serve.

With the girls: top 15 basicly, smacking the ball and agressive play then she ain't got no chance.

So get over it and accept the fact that HINGIS,or anyone with a serve as hers aint go win no damn SLAM!! and in my books aint no contender. And yeah I still think it will be a sad day in history if Hingis EVER win A GS!

I am a fan of both... but i think you got to be fair here

With that "shitty" serve of Hingis, she beat Serena at peak in 2001 AO.... I don't see what so shitty about that. If Hingis wants, she can grind out any match, without a big serve period.

Every player has something to rely on to grind out matches, for Serena and Venus, it is their big serves. For Hingis, it is her court savvy-ness.

Were you still daydreaming while you posted this message? I believe so. :o Wouldn't we all Hingis fans like for that to happen but we all know it wont especially after this round, she wasn't impressive at all, her movement and stamina were lacking at best.

This lack of pace on her ground strokes will be very costly against Viktoria, she will pummel serves and groundies and run Martina ragged until she succumbs from lack of fitness. It is sad but reality will soon kick in once more.

I mean she could at least use more length on her ground strokes since she can't manage to generate more pace but even at this she seems to be struggling. We shall see, it would be nice if she at least makes it an interesting three set match loss.

excuse me, but we all have a right to make choices. If the williams sisters can win a grand slam without playing any other tournament, then let it be. if they don't enjoy playing in certain tournaments, why should they? to me, a player who plays 30 tournaments a year to reach top 10 should be ashamed. yes, you two, jankovic and bartoli.

Well we'll have to agree to disagree.

I respect a player who supports the tour week in week out as opposed to a player who turns up for the $$$.

But you know what, if you can get away with that approach and still win, then why not i guess?

Hingis looks very fit and slim, the big players better watch out this time.
