Brazil's Nicole Lamanke-Huber, ranked #32 at the FWTT Tour, has score one of her biggest wins of her life earlier today. She upset Mirjana Huubere, her look-a-like, at the FWTT New York Exhibition.<br />This tournament is ran in a different format of the regular tennis matches. It's a best-of-5-sets match, and a player wins a set when scores 4 games, or 5-3 or even 5-4.

Mirjana Huubere started the match leading Nicole fast 3-0 with two breaks of serve. Nicole, till then, hadn't hit a single winner, but 5 unforced errors, including 2 double faults. Later, she broke Marteena once, but it wasn't enough to impede her 1st set victory at 4-2.

In the second set, Nicole found her rhythm and tightened the match, which keeped without breaks of serve. The set went to a tie-breaker, where Nicole, showing nerves of steel, saved three set points to close the set 5-4(5).

The third set was crucial for both players. Who won there would definitely have an advantage later on the match. Nicole and Martina were both on the top of their games, firing winners from both sides and enchanting the noisy crowd. Nicole, again, won the tie-break, this time 5-3.

The fourth and final set wasn't as tough as the two previous ones. Both players held their serves until Lamanke-Huber had a double break-point at 3-3 on Huubere's serve. She broke it with a forehand winner and later closed the set 5-3 and the match.

"This format is very weird. Sometimes I got kind of lost but this match was really good and I'm really happy to have won it. GREAT!"

Lamanke-Huber will face Delacour in the quarterfinals, who defeated Upanova 2-4 4-2 5-4 (5) 4-2.

Sorrenta Ousted In Hew York Exhibition

Interview with Eva Sorrenta:

Q: Eva, sorry about the loss today, how was it to be here in New York?

A: Well, I have been here several times before so it's nice to return to this nice city for exhibition.

Q: Is this your first visit since the September 11 tragedy?

A: Yes, it is. I was a bit reluctant to play here to be honest, just because I am sure it's been a hectic atmosphere, but the people of the city have brought a really positive feel to New York, and to see the city during the holiday season is nice aswell.

Q: Is this your first match against Masterton? How did you feel about the 5 set format?

A: It was a fun match, a bit difficult for me, never really got into much of a groove unfortunately. She's got a game that plays nicely indoors, and I'm not usually one to get a quick start so it was a bit difficult for me to sort of get myself going because she was taking the initiative quickly and by the time I'd get anything going the set would be nearly over. She definetly played tactically smart and deserved to win.

Q: You recently announced your wedding, has that been on your mind a lot?

A: Of course (smiles), I'm very excited. Anjie and I are very close, and I can't imagine being with anyone else but her. It was a very last minute decision to come here to New York, I only got here a day before match play so I was a bit unprepared, but I felt that I needed to get in a bit of tennis at least for the sake of hitting some balls. I reckon it's a bit good that I lost really since I want to get my planning done for the wedding anyway, but oh well. I'll be around to watch Anjie still and get some practice in on the courts anyway.

Q: How has the response been from friends and family about the wedding?

A: Very positive, they all want the best for us, and know that this decision is a good one for us so we're really pleased that we will be able to have an intimate gathering between the people we love so they can share our ceremony with us in Holland.

Q: Thank you Eva, congratulations.

A: Thank you.

Sorrenta To Compete In New York Farewell Match To Arenot

Interview with Eva Sorrenta:

Q: Eva, interesting week for you, first the announcement of your marriage, and also a last minute entry here. How has the week been?

A: It's been fun really. Obviously I didn't like losing in the opening round (laughter), but it was really great to play some more matches in consolation, because it gives me more chance to play some tennis. Plus the format made it interesting aswell, lots of surprises.

Q: You lost today against Huubere, and tomorrow you will compete against her in doubles, looking forward to that match?

A: Yeah, I'm good friends with Marteena, and she's always a close match for me. It'll be nice to have a match of doubles with Anjie against her and Nicole.

Q: Are you surprised by the announcement of Nicole's retirement?

A: Yes, I never expected that. She's always come across to me as a really positive easy going person out there, and really just enjoys playing tennis, so I was definetly surprised that she decided to retire. She's a very talented player and has a lot of promise, but I am sure she has her own reasons for her decision and we have to respect that. I wish her all the best in whatever she chooses to pursue after her tennis.

Q: Thank you Eva.

A: Thank you.

Anjelica de la Courtiere grabs third place

Q. Third place, not too bad?<br />DLC: Yeah, I'm happy. I just wanted to play, and it was an interesting format. I feel like I should have done a little better, but you know, I'm happy.

Q. Are you excited about your wedding?<br />DLC: Yes, of course. It's all I'm thinking about right now.

Q. What are your thoughts about Arenot's retirement?<br />DLC: Well, I think we deserve a little more explanation, but whatever. I'm not sure what's going on with her, but I think it's kind of sad that she promised to play with Jelena next year and now she's backing out.

Q. Are you pleased to be involved in the doubles exhibition tomorrow?<br />DLC: I guess it's okay. Eva and I can use the practice.

Q. Thanks, Anjelica.<br />DLC: No problem.

SABATINI WINS IN NEW YORK:<br />British player Sophia Sabatini won the New York exobition today beating Keller in straight sets. Sabatini showed amazing talent and power to win the final set 4-0.<br />'I'm so happy' gushed the 14 year old. 'To win here has boosted my confidence so much. It's a nice way to end the season'<br />Then Sabatini beat her compatriot Nicole Arenot, who was playin her last match 9-8(9-7).<br />'It wasnt the best of matches. She played pretty badly, probably becasue of her emotions. I didnt personally know her but I do know that she's an amazing tennis player and person. I wish her all the luck in the futur.'
