I guess there will be a Hopman Cup forum later on, but for the moment I thought I'd just post this news here..

Hopman Serves Up World's Best Ranked Team
28 August 2007

Tournament Director Paul McNamee today announced that “the best ranked team in the world was coming to Perth”. Men’s world number 3 Novak Djokovic and women’s number 3 Jelena Jankovic have accepted the invitation and will represent Serbia at this year’s International Mixed Teams’ Hyundai Hopman Cup.

“The Serbs are the hottest country in world tennis this year so it is a real coup to get them together for the 20th anniversary of the Hopman Cup.”

Novak Djokovic rose to the number three ranking highlight at the Montreal Masters where he defeated the world’s number 3, 2, and 1 ranked players becoming only the second player to defeat both world number 1 Roger Federer, world number two Rafael Nadal as well as Andy Roddick the then number 3.

Jelena Jankovic rose to the number three ranking after wins in Auckland, Charleston, Rome & Birmingham and a semi final appearance at Roland Garros. She was also the winner of the Mixed Doubles title at Wimbledon with Scot Jamie Murray.

Hyundai Hopman Cup XX, to be held from 29 December 2007 to 4 January 2008, is the Official Mixed Teams Competition of the ITF.

Yeah, it's the only team that's been officially named. I guess you can add Australia, USA and Russia to the list (though individual players aren't yet confirmed), which leaves 4 more countries to speculate about.

Third Top 10 Player Commits to Hopman
20 September 2007

A third top 10 player in Men’s World Number 10 Tomas Berdych will contest this year’s Hyundai Hopman Cup. Berdych will partner Australian Open Quarter finalist and World Number 22 Lucie Safarova for the Czech Republic at this year’s ITF International Mixed Teams Competition. The other top 10 players already confirmed are World Number 3 Novak Djokovic and World Number 3 Jelena Jankovic, representing Serbia.

The Czech duo made their debut in Perth last year and Tournament Director Paul McNamee was quick to invite the couple back this year.

“Tomas has risen to number 10 in the world at only 21 years of age and is heading toward the top. He is one of the only players to have defeated both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal - Nadal last year in Madrid and Federer at the Olympics, so we know he has talent to burn. It is only a matter of time before he puts a run together on the big stage”.

Lucie Safarova, only 20, after playing in Perth last year, caused one of the big upsets at the Australian Open when she defeated defending Champion and then World number one Amelie Mauresmo in the fourth round. This year she also has wins over 5 top ten players – Nicole Vaidisova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadia Petrova, Anna Chakvetadze and world number one Justine Henin enroute to a career high world ranking of 22.

The Hyundai Hopman Cup is widely regarded as the most prestigious invitation tennis tournament in the world. It has the imprimatur of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the governing body of the sport, which provides the ongoing stability of the event.

The Hopman Cup, having bought to Perth an incredible array of the world’s tennis playing elite, including 19 worlds no 1’s, looks forward to celebrating the 20-year milestone at this year’s event.

From a TV perspective, the Hyundai Hopman Cup, with live national coverage of 42 hours on ABC and 66 hours on Fox Sports, continues to enjoy its status as the most televised weekly sporting event in Australia.

The Hyundai Hopman Cup will be played at the Burswood Dome from 29 December 2007 – 4 January 2008.

She can't get into Auckland, but she could possibly have played Gold Coast. It's a tier 3. Don't think they have restirctions on top 10 players there like tier 4's do.

But anyway, I would like for Netherlands to play Hopman Cup because I want to come to Perth again, and I like the 2 teams they announced already. If NL don't play HC, then I guess I'm off to Gold Coast.

The defending champions are given a spot in the following year's draw as are the USA, who always participate each year. I don't think anything will change in regards to these two countries. They don't HAVE to play, but the americans always do and Russia has competed in the last few tournaments and they are defending champions, so alot is riding for them.

Yes, so I'm just saying that it doesn't have to be that Russia and USA will play. They probably will, but they don't 100% have to. Depending on what the teams are if those 2 countries play then it may make me more interested, or less - although I don't really like any of the Russian guys, so whoever they pick there isn't gonna interest me.

While in womens it's out of Molik, Pratt, Dellacqua or Moore. Stosur is playing Gold Coast.

I would prefer to see Dellacqua or Moore than Molik. I'm pretty sure Pratt wouldn't get it.

Alicia would be better off playing the Gold Coast to get some points rather than dabble at the Hopman Cup again. In contrast, it would be a great learning experience for Dellacqua or Moore. Both of them have shown in recent times (particularly Casey) that they can mix it with some of the best players in the world. And considering it is in both of their home towns, iI'm sure it would bring out the best in either of them.

The announced players so far are:

SRB - Novak Djokovic, Jelena Jankovic
CZE - Tomas Berdych, Lucie Safarova
FRA - Gael Monfils, Tatiana Golovin
USA - Mardy Fish,
IND - Sania Mirza (speculated),
AUS -
RUS -

It's not a bad field but it still needs another Top 10 female player or marquee player (or better yet, a Top 10 female marquee player).

The Aussie team should be exciting for fans this year. Molik is a good player but I think Perth would be bouyed with a Casey Dellacqua selection! Or why not go for a team with complete inexperience - Bernard Tomic and Jessica Moore! LOL.

There are plenty of Russian women to choose from but so many of them are already ruled out - Sharapova, Kuznetsova and Dementieva are most likely headed for Hong Kong, and Safina is headed for Gold Coast to defend her title. That leaves Petrova to either return to defend the title or head to Auckland or Gold Coast if she falls out of the Top 10. Meanwhile, the top Russian men are all locked in Davis Cup battle, with Davydenko, Safin, Youzhny and Tursunov all busy with Davis Cup duties. James Blake has already declined a Hopman Cup invitation for the US, due to Davis Cup duties, so I doubt any of those Russian men would be willing to back up for Hopman Cup so soon after Davis Cup. Tursunov did it last year but paid dearly for it with an arm injury. Safin has also been burned from playing Hopman Cup so soon after the end of the season.

My mind says that Petrova and Tursunov will front up again, but I wouldn't be too surprised if Maria Kirilenko and Igor Andreev (unless he's playing Davis Cup) play instead. Kuznetsova should take another stab at it if they can provide her with a good male partner. Sharapova doesn't want to play unless it's staged outdoors.

I would think that India would actually be playing the Asian Hopman Cup again considering how easily they won it last year. This is just my opinion. If India got a maindraw position into the Hopman Cup that means that possibly a mediocre Asian team would also be included. The Thai and Japanese teams mentioned are both okay teams, but last year the teams in the Asian Hopman Cup were not of the highest standard.

Me too, I think that they can do well. Both have made quarter finals on the senior tour...

Luczak? I don't really want to see Alicia in Perth again. I like Alicia but how many times has she played this tournament? Pratt would be awful. Casey would be a good option. She's at the stage where she could really use some experience against top players. But whatever, I'll probably end up disliking the Australian team anyway.

France, Czech Republic, Serbia and the Asian winner are already confirmed, and USA, Australia and Russia are more than likely going to be invited. That leaves only one more place. Another European team would mean that more than half of the teams are European. :( I would rather see some diversity.

Argentina? Dulko and Monaco?
India? Mirza and Roy/Bhupathi/Bopanna/Paes?
Israel? Peer and Sela?
Canada? Wozniak/Dubois and Dancevic?

It's hard to find a South American country other than Argentina that has a good female and male player. Dulko and Monaco would make a great team imo.

Flamboyant French Into Hopman
5/10/2007

Tatiana Golovin and Gael MonfilsTournament Director Paul McNamee today announced that exciting youngster Gael Monfils would team with the glamorous teenager Tatiana Golovin and represent tennis powerhouse France at this year’s ITF International Mixed Teams Competition - the Hyundai Hopman Cup.

McNamee explained the reason for choosing to invite this French Team, “We like to showcase exciting young talent. Gael electrified the Melbourne crowd earlier this year at the Australian Open and he was one of the first players I contacted to check his availability. His athleticism and “joi de vie” make him very exciting to watch and his forehand is simply huge!”

Earlier this year Tatiana Golovin reached a career high ranking of 16 (currently 19) after winning her first of two WTA titles this year at Amelia Island defeating Petrova, Ivanovic and Venus Williams. Last December she answered a last minute call up for Hopman XIX. Arriving at the 11th hour, to represent France, she won two singles matches including a victory over Australia’s Alicia Molik.

McNamee said, “I really like the way Tatiana plays and the glamour this 19 year old brings to the game - these two French players should light up the court!”

The Hopman Cup, widely regarded as the most prestigious invitational tennis tournament in the world, looks forward to celebrating its 20 year milestone at this year’s event. The Cup is renowned for introducing young talent to the Australian public, including Monica Seles, Martina Hingis and Roger Federer, who won his maiden professional victory at the Hopman Cup.

“This French team is one of the best examples of young talent in the sport right now”, said McNamee.

India Add Sparkle to Hopman
16/10/2007

Sania Mirza and Rohan BopannaThe surprise package of last year’s Hyundai Hopman Cup - India, represented by Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna have today been confirmed as the fourth team for Hopman XX.

Mirza and Bopanna played last year after qualifying through winning the inaugural Asian Hopman Cup. For Indian fans the excitement built when India upset both Croatia and the Czech Republic before a loss to Spain prevented them reaching the final. India were undefeated in the mixed doubles and their sparkling form led to the decision to give them direct entry to Hopman XX.

Tournament Director, Paul McNamee said “I am delighted to invite India directly into the field. It’s just reward for their challenge last year and for Sania’s considerable progress this year”.

Sania Mirza is a bonafide superstar in India and at only 19 years of age is on target to reach her goal of being the first Indian woman in the top 20. A hot US summer series which included wins over Tatiana Golovin, Martina Hingis, Dinara Safina, Sharar Peer, and Patty Schneider has her sitting at 27 on the world rankings and after reaching the quarterfinals in Japan last week, she may reach her goal this year.

Rohan Bopanna has had a successful year on the Challenger circuit winning a singles tournament in Dublin and 5 Doubles titles to give him an ATP doubles ranking of 86 but it was his brilliant form in the mixed doubles at last year's Hopman that helped secure the invitation for India.

:woohoo: Good luck India!!

Ok, I have a couple of rumours for you guys... The first one is rather standard but the second one is interesting.

Firstly, Paul is waiting for the season to end before deciding on the Russian pair. He wants to choose the fittest pairing to ensure that they actually show up. The Russian men have the Davis Cup final to think about first. The women have been more reliable so far and his top choice is Sveta, but she won't play unless she is paired with one of the top men.

The second rumour is absurd but could possibly be closer to the truth than we realize. Apparently, Alicia might be opting for tournament play rather than the Hopman Cup. So Paul wants to give another girl a chance. Believe it or not, the rumour is that his top choice is Jessica Moore! I'm not kidding. He's willing to give her a shot over Casey Dellacqua because he sees Jess as being more promising (like a Dokic) and better looking, meaning that she will add more glamour to the tournament. I heard about it from someone who has connections to the Hopman Cup office. I don't know if they were pulling my leg or what, but don't be too shocked if Jessica is there.

As for the male player, they are definitely looking at Peter Luczak and Chris Guccione for now, but failing to sign them means signing a top junior like Brydan Klein or Greg Jones.

Personally, a Gooch and Dellacqua pairing might be interesting even if they don't end up doing particularly well. I believe they may have played mixed together before at the Australian Open.

I hope you are wrong. Sveta =

We need an Andreev/Kirilenko or Andreev/Chakvetadze combination! I wonder if Sveta considers Igor a top Russian. If not, then she won't play if he's selected. ;) I hope that is the case.

If Jess was chosen over Casey it would really be a slap in the face for her. Casey has been working hard on the tour and has shown some great signs of improvement. I wouldn't mind seeing a junior/junior combination for Australia.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Paul failed to nab Venus, Serena or Lindsay for the USA team. There isn't really anyone to choose from once you take out those 3 women.

I can't fathom the reasoning for not inviting a Russian team. They are clearly the leading tennis nation, and there are so many combinations that can be made that will still make a strong team. Like I said it just doesn't make sense to me to not invite Russia, so I'm thinking we might not be seeing the US in Perth this year.

Well I just noticed Mardy Fish's name included in the article for the announcement of Argentina. So I guess no Russia at this years Hopman Cup. That is quite slack, I mean they are the leading tennis nation AND defending champions... What's going on Paul? You didn't care about making the Hopman Cup 'global' last year.

IMO India should've been made to play Asian Hopman Cup again. Yes, provided Sania had won her singles match they were a threat to anyone in mixed doubles last year, but this means they take a position in the maindraw that a stronger team could've had. India most likely would've made the maindraw anyway by winning Asian Hopman Cup.

Harvs, I didn't quite understand some parts of your post. :)

Serbia, Czech Republic, France, India and Argentina are now confirmed. Australia will play. Mardy Fish is apparently playing for the USA so they are in. An Asian team is in through the Asian Hopman Cup. That is 8.

This is a decent field. It could've been great, but it is still ok. If Venus plays for USA then it will make me a lot happier. Serena would be great too.

I do agree with you though Harvs on India. They should've been made to play the Asian Hopman Cup in my opinion. They probably would've won it if Bopanna held it together in singles and mixed. Serbia, Czech Republic, France, Argentina, Australia, USA, India & Russia is a far superior line up compared to Serbia, Czech Republic, France, Argentina, Australia, USA, India & Asian team.

Oh of course Lindsay would be the most famous player in the tournament if she was to play (after Jankovic & Djokovic as you mentioned). ;)

But I just don't think a Lindsay vs Jelena, Lindsay vs Lucie, Lindsay vs Alicia, Lindsay vs Sania or Lindsay vs Tatiana match would be as dramatic as if you substituted Serena's name, the reigning Australian Open champion, into each matchup.

You are a Davenport fan so of course you want to see her play. But I would prefer Serena. Either way I hope the organizers manage to get one of them on board. An understrength USA team being chosen over a Russian team would make me hark on about Russia not being invited for at least another week.

There are 5 teams that have a great chance at winning the title at Hopman Cup this year.

1. Serbia - Cannot see them losing, but it can happen.
2. USA - Serena, Serena, Serena.
3. France - Tati has been playing excellent tennis these past few months and Gael is capable of an upset or two.
4. Czech - Berdych has improved alot and is getting more consistant. Lucie can also cause big surprises.
5. Aussies - No bias, but have always been in a position to make the final. Are the only team in the past three Hopman Cups to have defeated the eventual champion, only to have a player get injured and sabotage Australia's finals hopes.

Argentina can also become a surprise package but I cannot see Gisela being a huge strength against the above 5 countries or even Mirza. Gisa also hase a 1-6 record in singles in Perth. Much the same for Bopanna, who has yet to win a set in singles, although he has won each doubles match. India must rely on Mirza, who may pull off a couple upsets.

I don't think Australia has a chance of winning with Luczak. He will struggle against Fish and Berdych. He should probably beat Bopanna but it's no certainty.

Alicia certainly isn't guarenteed wins over Serena, Lucie or Sania either. If Alicia can win her singles rubber and if they are able to play well in the mixed rubber then Australia has a slim chance.

Clement is IN.
Makes that side look a little weaker. France was my smokey on that side too. I prefer Clement, just a little worried about his singles. Had some good dbls results last year, so who knows. There is always one that pulls out about this time, I was thinkin Serena, I see in this article they still question if she will play. If she dosent group b (aus, india usa & czech) very interesting and even!!!

I don't think Clement's introduction makes the French team that much weaker. What has Monfils been doing the last half of the year? Not much that I have heard about, so it's not like Monfils was in top form. Arnaud Clement should be able to hold his own in singles matches against Djokovic, Chela & Lu, so I see France being the main challenge to Serbia. I'm starting to favour France actually. Serbia and France are probably my two favourite teams.

If you go to this page: http://pages.tvunetworks.com/channels/index.jsp?g=3# you will be able to watch Fish's match against Bopanna. They are showing the whole match and they have just shown Shaughnessy's match against Mirza.

PS: Once you open the link choose "StarSports" channel.
