Not really a choke. Gajdosova was really playing well. If anyone, Jarmila choked the second set away with errors.

Ah terrible game by Jelena when she had MPs, luckily she played OK in the TB. Nevertheless, congrats :yeah:

From what I saw in the second set, Jarmila improved a lot since the last time I saw her. Her movement improved and her hitting is better. I hope all this will have an impact on her play and ranking in the long run soon. :D
She couldn't do much with this draw today though. Well fought nonetheless.

It looked to me like both players were influenced by the heat. Jelena wasn't hitting her shots deep enough through the majority of the second set. Gajdosova started putting the short balls away. Jelena seemed to realize she was going to lose if she didn't wake up and turned things up in the tie breaker. Her shots were a lot deeper and Jarmila seemed to be unable to adjust...the shots that had been winners for her were going into the net or out.

Jelena will need to raise her game to get past Elena (assuming Elena is playing well).

She's capable of doing just that.

Bad form from Jelena, too many short and floating balls. Her serve was ridiculous at the end of the match. Too bad that Jarmila is not consistent enough because she really had the weapons to overpower Jankovic.

She looked frustrated and angry, threw a racket couple of times. She was hitting a ball like a maniac even if Jelena's serv was out in ball boys/girls direction and the ball hit one poor girl couple of times. I even think Jarmila started crying during one pause.

I hope you will see it ;)

JJ: Yucky...I don't care if she won. Something looked wrong with her.

Gajdosova: Some amazing shotmaking skills, but rather brainless point construction. A good coach could do her a world of good.

Do you think if she got a good disciplinarian as a coach it could help her? She really has top level talent in her serve and strokes, even if it is ballbashery. She just needs to learn how to harness it.

That would be a good move...anything to refine that game. She didn't play that much better today than she did at Wimbledon, but JJ was more aggressive in that match. Hope to see Jarmila make the right choices in the future, she's good.

She already had an Aussie coach and he was a disciplinarian, very strict. :o But she has split up with Simon Walsh in April and I don't know what her current coaching situation is, she was working with someone after that, I don't know how that worked out though.

And the Aussie citizenship thing is still on, it's not final though.
Personally I don't like the idea. :o

Nearly a massive choke from Jelena but she righted the ship just in time.

You know - I really don't think Jelena did anything at all to right the ship. She just played pretty constant - and a bit passive all those games at the end and didn't change anything in the tie breaker. Gajdosova has some real weapons and they were going in during the latter games in the second set. When it came to the tie break - apart from the winner by Jelena to win the match - it was all easy points and errors by Gajdosova - they had to come eventually - the way she played it was all or nothing every shot.

Personally I'm reasonably OK with the way Jelena played at the end. It was enough to win. Except perhaps a couple of things:

That serve at the end worried me a bit. Seeme like it was about 80mph and it always seems to go like this when she tightens up. At least she didn't make a load of DFs. But against a better player - when she goes like that there's usually DFs in there as well.
Without taking too many risks - I think she could have made some more angled shots. She was keeping a huge safety margin and hitting a lot in the middle. As far as all those MPs Jelena missed - I think the one she should have taken was the first one. She had an opportunity. It's funny how many times I see a player not take a point at 0-40 against an attacking player and then not get a chance with the rest of the points.

That may have been the worst serving I've seen from JJ...and that's saying something. It almost looked like something was hampering her and you could really hear her struggling just to spin it in. No idea what was going on there.

It wasn't a choke from Jelena. If you watched the match, you could tell that Gajdosova is the type of player that hits hard without thinking. Well, when she found herself with three match points down, she got desperate and hit away. The bad news for Jelena was that Gajdosova's balls started going in for a while.

I doubt whether she herself knows if she wants to change her citizenship. The whole thing is kinda confusing. First it seemed to be sure that she would change it (we were even talking about it with her brother). She would have both slovakian and australian passport. But after few months she denied that she ever wanted to change it.

Didn't she have an Aussie bf before? I saw someone post in her cheering thread that she's with some Czech player now.
I think that her considering the idea of getting the Aussie passport was due to her coaching team being from Australia, but now that's not the case anymore and I guess the things in her life have changed.

It was mainly due to her disputes with slovakian tennis federation.

Shepster
Aug 27th, 2007, 10:36 PM
Well... I think JJ was just content to let Jarmila lose the match rather than win it. It was all on Jarmila's racket at the end and while I apreciate she has to go for those huge shots to win, she needs to choose more when to hit them.

Really bad serving from JJ - it says her avg. 2nd serve speed was 74mph and her fastest first was 103 and I can believe that because it had nothing on it at all but her defence was so stunning she could stay alive until her opponent hit another UE. She'll have to be way more aggressive in later rounds as she cannot rely on that against more accomplished players.

Overall she played well, but a huge wobble (the best thing about which is she got herself out of) and held her nerve in the tiebreak when her opponent couldn't do the same. Good that she came through that test but bad that she had that test this early. I wish her luck for the rest of the tournament.

Well, Jelena played pretty awesome in 1st set, she was hitting ball cleanly, serve was good for her standards, forehand was superb.
Of course, we didn't expected anything less than a bit of JJ's passiveness show in 2nd set, but hey...it's only first round - shell' be better in next one (I hope )

I agree completely. Jarka can hit the hell out of the ball but she is so inconsistent. If she can become more consistent and think more smartly, I can definitely see her in the Top 30.

Gajdosova hit plenty of winners in the match, even more than Jelena, but consistency held her back. Hopefully Gajdosova will be more consistent & can break into the Top 50.
