Draws are always fair, we are told but...

Why at this year's US Open are most of the top contenders:

Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Justine Henin, Jelena Jankovic, and Ana Ivanovic in the top half.....

and the other TOP contender in the bottom half..... you guessed it.... Maria Sharapova!

This helped her get to the final at the AO, and she even had to go through Kim!

Not much help in the final! If any of the five above make the final and Maria is there, she will once again be a finalist rather than a winner.

I am NOT saying that the draws are fixed. I am saying that lucky draws are NOT always "lucky".

Actually, the tougher match that she had was against Camilie "Ace" Pin.

There is NO conspriracy.

It is VERY simple: WEAK draws 8 of 10 times EQUAL bad results for the player that receives them.

Maybe Maria will get lucky this year and beat the odds!

Actually, the tougher match that she had was against Camilie "Ace" Pin.

Serena went through a very difficult first round in 2003 which she was expected to win going away, but just scraped through in three sets.

The Camilie Pin match is irrelevant in this "discussion". Maria should have won easily! Weak draws often lead to failure is the issue.

The REALLY SAD THING is that most of the responses to this thread seem to not mind that FIVE of the top SIX contenders for this tourney are placed in one half of the draw.

This is totally irresponsible on the part of tournamant organizers. I do not know how to fix this, but the organizers should want the top contenders to have a CHANCE of competing in the quarters, semis and finals. Please fix the draw procedure to make this happen.

Or... do you want Maria, Jelena, Serena, Venus, and other top players to just play each other in the early rounds, where some have to lose and not play in the later rounds where they should be.

It should be that of the top six contenders there should be at least three on each side. I realize that with Serena's and Venus' lower ranking by the "official" system causes problems, but something needs to be done, similar to what Wimbledon does. History is important.

Maria, weak draw, gone. Now the winner is likely in the top half. Maybe Svetlana has a chance but this draw is really bad for tennis.

This is soo boring now. The reason the draw looks unbalanced is really because the rankings dont really reflect the contenders.

We all know Serena and Venus should both be Top 8 seeds, but the fact that they dont play enough (due to injuries) means they arent high enough in the rankings. The seeds as in the numbers are placed equally, it just happens to be were players are ranked and therefore the seed numbers they are.

Kuznetsova for example the No.4 seed and former champion, no-one has picked for title, but even if for example Venus had been in the bottom of the draw, the top part would still be heavy.. it would just be Venus who had the "easy" draw.
