Yesterday early in the 1st set Anna Keothavong stopped after a point and went to the chair umpire giving him a tennis ball saying "this is a Men's ball". The chair umpire looked at it confirmed that it was an ATP ball and removed it from play.

Does this happen a lot throughout the season at joint tour tournaments?

i never heard of such a thing, there isn't any difference between the balls, just the advert on the balls is different. So, there was no real need to change the ball. There are so few joint tournies that it stays unnoticed.

HUH??? where did you hear that?
In different tournies they use different balls, but here the balls are the same...

Please change the name of the thread to something more correct, cause it really bothers me!

This is the first time I've heard of this. I've always thought they use the same balls for both WTA/ATP.

I wasn't aware that women had different "balls"!!

Seriously, I think it SUCKS that there could be a difference in the tennis balls that are used for men , women or different surfaces.

The tennis ball SHOULD be a STANDARD size, weight and texture.

Racquets can vary within limits as long as any player has the right to choose ANY racquet.

Ohhh thanx (and sorry)!!! THIS IS definitely news to me and I have to say that I don't like it one bit. I mean there are uni-sex racquets and most play with them, why would you take different balls???? I can understand playing with different ones in different tournies, but with all these equality regualations why not take the same balls... Balls don't have a major role, so why not have the same ones? Can you imagine how fast federer's balls would travel then... that didn't sound that good either, oh well.

thanx for changing the title
