I watched her whole semi (with Sania, vs. Peschke and Stubbs/Crankypants), and I was rooting for her all the way! However, I really don't understand her game. Her serve was very inconsistent, her groundstrokes are way too flat and whenever she goes for them they seem to go several feet long, and she missed every volley that wasn't right to her. She also was pretty negative and doesn't seem very mobile. Was she having an off day? She's so accomplished as a doubles player, and she's won a singles title, so there's obviously something there, but I just don't see it. What are her strengths? Anyone?

Nope, you describe her game exactly right. So......um.........yeah now we wait for someone to explain how she's so accomplished..... :tennis:

When she gets her first serve in it can be a weapon, her groundstrokes are very good when they go in as well.

her forehand is the most akward shot i've herever seen, backhand is pretty strange too... Her serve is probably considered a weapon and her forehand is so strange that it may surprise the opponent, it also goes very close the lines and very flat, so it's just if it's her "day" she wins with the better players and on an average day she somehow wins with the lesser players....

Hahahaha is that an explanation??

She hits it very very flat, and when she can get them in consistently she's dangerous. Also she can hit wacky angles...kinda like what Myskina used to do with her shots....that's all I can think of.

And she looks like Tea Leoni

And she looks like Tea Leoni

That's what i've been trying to think up  I knew she something was familiar about her, but i couldn't grasp it. Thanks for saying that :tape::p

she's got bad feet so that + height explains why she isnt a good mover.

She's dangerous on grass with that flat ground stroke. She's can be a factor on carpet too. Her forehand resembles Steffi's. I can't believe she grew up playing on claycourt because nowhere in her game can you see top spin.

She was probably on an off day, but she's kind of awkward always. In some interview her opponents admit having difficuly because she's such a strange player  Her movement's crap because she has some skeletical problems with her feet. Her groundstrokes are so flat they have side spin on them. I remember a british Eurosport commentator who played Mara sayed "I went out on court and saw all these balls swerving around, I though 'oh god, what now?'"

She can play a decent serve-and-volley game and do well with it. Her foot problem has really messed her up, though.

She is great to watch, especially on clay, I love watchin her serving/volleying! And she is a very nice girl!

She's fresh. Inconsistent, but a game that when on can be very damaging.

Mara's got a great game, to me. Her movement is a problem, but what's the deal with her foot? I've been hearing about it but is it going to be a permanent problem for her now or is it going to go away?

I dunno, she's pretty good at net and can absorb pace well. Great serve too. I just wish her success in doubles would get into her singles game as well; top 30 is great but I want to see her top 20 and competing with Schiavone for #1 Italian.

they did win! but i'm not really sure how...

they were totally dominated in the first set. stubbs was all over the place and that, coupled with her pumping herself up by slapping kveta in the butt, led them to an easy first set. in the second set sania really started to find her groundies, but it was still pretty tense. at one point, stubbs hit a lob that was CLEARLY long, but mara was blocking the line judge so the chair ump had to overrule. i guess he did it a little late, because stubbs absolutely LOST it! she laid into him for like five minutes, and then they lost the set and the tiebreaker. sania hit some amazing forehands, and stubbs never really recovered. mara and kveta were basically non-factors it seemed like.

the best part was, after the match, stubbs continued to argue with the umpire. she's in her late thirties and still acts like a little baby. i booed her!!

it's low margin game. when it's one it's she's capable of taking it to any player on tour. when it's slightly off she can look like a club player. they won didn't say so obviously she wasn't so bad.

Santangelo is a funny name if you ask me. What does it mean? Her name sounds like some animal which I can't recall. She plays very good when she's on and she plays horrid when she off. I think she's an inconsistent player and if she can be more consistent with herself, she can beat many people. I hope she will find her range soon. She's supermodel material by the way.
