Lucie Safarova.
The same Lucie Safarova Serena dismissed in Miami earlier this year in straights 6-3 6-4?

6-3 6-4 is hardly a dismissal, and before that it was 3-6 6-3 7-6(5), I'd say that's quite a match.
I'm talking about the Lucie who is 1-0 against Justine with a 7-6(5) 6-4 win
The one that's 2-0 against Mauresmo, both in grand slams without losing a set

No, she hasn't. But, she definitely has the potential to beat Serena, if Serena gets past Vera.

We all know Serena is weakest in the early rounds. She has to get to Lucie first  :tape: Okay even I have to laugh at that one... but still, if someone's going to beat her Lucie's got the game.

Marion looks to have found her form though after those losses. She looked pretty good in Toronto. Fatigue might be a factor though, as she seems to be exhausted ATM.

Yeah against Dementieva she just looked like she couldn't ever catch her breath. She definitely is getting back into the swing of things... Lucie's just a big fighter!

If some of you haven't noticed Lucie has played like a different person in the last three slams.

I don't know why it is but the girl peaks in the 3rd and 4th rounds at slams.

The way she's played has been scary good.
She definitely had something to do with Jankovic not having enough against Bartoli at Wimbledon.

If she does the same thing at this slam she will beat Bartoli and probably have Serena fans on the edge of their seats.

I can't see Lucie beating Serena. She couldn't even beat a rusty Serena in Hobart after not playing for 5 months so I don't see it happening now when Serena is much better physically and mentally

She was great at the beginning of the year. I hope she regains that form and confidence. She definately should win another title before the end of the year.

Saying Safarova has beaten Mauresmo does not make her look good. And that Justine match? Come on, Justine's first tournament back in almost 4 months. Give me a break.
Safarova lost to Pre-Australia Serena in a 3rd Set Tiebreak. Serena has only been improving since then. Serena wins in two. One easy, one tough set.

I've seen Lucie play some amazing tennis...she just doesn't do it on a regular basis. She's got everything...great groundstrokes, incredible speed, defense. She tends to get up for slams and for top players, so that works in her favor...but her form coming in has been really bad.

starin
Aug 26th, 2007, 06:31 AM
could happen. Safarova is a tough player and Serena is vulnerable in the early rounds, especially coming in with no match play. Serena's def. got a very tough draw ahead of her. Safarova/bartoli, zvonereva, likhotesva, all players she's struggled with in the past. I could see Lucie with zero pressure playing lights out tennis but she had the exact same situation in hobart and still lost and she had much less pressure on her in that match than she would at the USO.

let's look at Serena's losses at the US Open shall we :wavey:

1998: R32 l. to (9) Spirela 7-5 in the third after bagelling her in the second
1999: oh yeah, she didn't lose to anyone that year '
2000: QF l. to (2) Davenport 4 and 2. Lindsay was just hot that summer.
2001: F l. to (4) Venus 2 and 4. Venus was on a 20 match US Open win streak
2002: see 1999
2003: DNP
2004: QF :fiery: not even gonna comment
2005: R16 l. to (10) Venus. It was tight match, but she was very unfit.
2006: R16 l. to (1) Maruesmo. See 2005.

She's never lost to someone out of the top 10. EVER. And she's only lost once before the second week. As fit/hungry/determined as Serena is, I don't see her losing to Lucie.

She couldn't beat her in Hobart, she couldn't beat her in Miami, and should they meet, I don't see her beating Serena there.

Lucie has immense talent, but a game which is prone to error because she is so aggressive. She can overpower players like Mauresmo, Jankovic, because they don't usually hit a lot of winners. But Serena is just as aggressive, and can play defensive too. It would take a great match from Lucie to make it to the 4th and beat Serena.

Serena has losses against Bammer, Chan, Schnyder this year. Of course Safarova could beat her. She almost already did in Hobart :wavey:

Lucie is a talent that I think eventually will be in the top ten. But even though she is a very dangerous player to the current top ten, she herself can stink up the court like the rest of them with inconsistent play. Never say never but I don't see her going far in the tournament, at least this year.

I bet two years from now we will be talking about a very successful player in Safarova.

Serena can lose before Quarters

terjw
Aug 26th, 2007, 11:34 AM
I think it will happen. But they'll have to do a bit better than they've been doing these last 4 years:

Serena:
Beaten in 4th round 2 out of 3 times.
Beaten in quarters 1 out of 3 times.

Justine:
Beaten in 4th round 2 out of 4 times.
Otherwise she makes the finals and either wins it or finishes runner-up.

So going by this:

The odds both players make it are (1/3)*(1/2) = 1 in 6.
The odds neither player makes it are (2/3)*(1/2) = 1 in 3On the other hand - they are playing better this year.

LOL! The 7-6 in the 3rd match was before AO '07. It was very sloppy on Serena's part not Safarova just hanging with her with groundstrokes. Safarova makes too many errors, her serve goes up and down, and she isn't going to beat Serena off the ground consistently. I think Zvonareva has a better chance of the upset and I'm a safarova fan.

These matches against Mauresmo in GS are not solid reference points because in each match Amélie was clearly lacking of physical preparation.

Correct, but it doesn't take away from the fact that she won... how about these matches:

6-4 6-2 win over Vaidisova
like i said before: 7-6 6-4 win over Justine
6-3 6-4 win over Kuznetsova
Gold Coast last year without dropping a set (Schnyder, Safina)
Vaidisova again 6-1 4-6 6-4

Yes she has some poor loses, but she's capable of anything if she plays her best, which if anything she does against top players.

I guess we won't know until Sunday

Why the Serena/Justine match-up won't happen? Serena will fake another injury (this time a toe........nail injury) and withdraw with excruciating pain the round before.

haha this made me laugh.
The QF will happen, Serena is MUCH fitter than hobart and even fitter than miami, i can't see lucie beating serena if serena is the fittest she has been this year, plus with the american crowd behind her there's no way. Lucie has the game to bother serena but i'll be dead with shock if serena loses to her
