I know everyone else hated it, but I liked her babydoll blue outfit in Tokyo 06. Only outfit of hers I liked and only one I continue to like it seems. :tape:

Still, it'll be interesting to see on court.

I still don't see what it has to do with the New York skyline. I know she has a different dress for day/night session matches, so maybe the other dress will incorporate that theme into it.

Attack mode?

You're the one that brought Serena into the discussion. The thread is about Maria's dresses for the US Open. I'm not even the one that said she's not focused on tennis.

But YOU were the one that said:
This does not look practical, she is spending a lot of time at fashion shows. This is an attempt to outdo everyone I hope she doesnt go into the second week.
she's not the only one..look at serena, at least maria plays tournaments

Maria's played 2 more events than Serena, and 2 have been in the summer. So all my post was saying was that, they've VIRTUALLY played the same amount

Relax, take a deep breath. Enjoy the pretty dresses while you can, because, trust me, unless you BUY, or record Maria's matches, you won't see them for long ;)

Now THAT, that was an attack ;) :wavey:

Maria is the lady in red

MARIA SHARAPOVA never fails to turn heads when she steps on to a tennis court.

And the Russian sensation is ready to make her mark at the US Open in a couple of hot little numbers.

As you can see, Sharapova will be modelling a sexy red dress for evening matches at New York's Flushing Meadows.

Encrusted with Swarovski crystals, the Nike outfit features a graphic design inspired by the Big Apple's skyline.

Sharapova, who worked with her sponsors on the dress, said: "Nike have always understood my desire to make a big impression in New York.

"And the dresses we've come up with for the US Open have always looked as good as they feel when I'm playing.

For day matches, Sharapova will be looking good in a custom white and black version.

Let's just hope she stays in the tournament long enough to give everyone a close look at her form.

It's better in my opinion than her black Star Trek inspired dress from last year. :p

It looks like a short ball gown, but it's cute. :)

The dress looks great on Maria, but I don't see Nike selling too many of those to club-level players, which defeats the purpose of paying these players big money to endorse their products.

it's an abstract of the NY skyline....its turned upside down, if you look @ the dress again you'll see it. the top part that is in swarovski crystal...if its flipped around you'll see what there talking about. :)

It's not about trying to sell those particular dresses, but having the Nike logo prominently displayed.

i dont know... leather would be stupid on a sport's dress though, i guess.

but: "Masha will walk onto the courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center carrying her belongings in a six-racquet bag from her eponymous limited edition collection by Prince. The bag’s exterior is made with patent leather and detailed with fuschia-colored velour."

there are no pictures of the bag. and on prince's official site they say you have to write them an email to get pics.

That's what billboards and commercials are for, my friend. The athletes are being paid to sell the specific products they're wearing.

The tournament and sponsors are doing their best to create a hoopla, and Maria will be on TV nightly. She's become a walking billboard for them, essentially, so Nike will benefit more from their logo than a dress that they know probably would only sell to a small niche market.

What you posted is true about it's selling value.

But in promoting her outfit and drawing attention to it, it draws attention to nike itself which brings up sales.

Maria's plain and white Wimbledon dress from 2004 is the top selling tennis dress of all time, so you're right, the plainer items sell much better.

PS, once saw an old wealthy white woman wearing Serena Williams's cool dress from last year's US Open, and I about died. I think she had a plain hot pink visor on too! :haha:

No they're not...
Sharapova is worth millions and millions for nike to promote sales of all things nike.
Women don't even buy tennis dresses. It's not a large market.
It's about selling socks, tennis shoes, water bottles, visors, sports bras, etc.

Best dress I've ever seen on a tennis player, makes her look great, accentuates those amazing legs, and is simple at the same time.

Or maybe I'm just a blind Sharapova fan. :o

No, that dress does look great on Maria, and I'm a card-carrying, dues-paying Masha Hater. The problem is, I can't see anyone besides Maria in that dress, so I can't see Nike selling too many of them. To be fair, I don't think Serena's collection will sell for that same reason.

Are they even selling the dress? I don't think they sold the black tiffany dress from last year, noh? they did sell the day session one i believe because it was more universal and practical - not sure though. i really don't think the point is to sell many of these red dresses as it is to give publicity for maria and nike.

Yeah, thanks for the video, thats when I really decided she looked great. Can't wait to see her swing a racquet with it though...will she have her hair in a ponytail? I don't want a visor ruining this dress....hmmm.

I know what you mean, but I agree with bs that it's not their main point. I think Maria's and their big thing is making Maria the big tennis fashion icon, not the practical tennis dress wearing player.

well... They are both nice, but they could have been better. The day dres would have been classic without the stuff on the collar.

The red dress kind of looks like a figure skating dress...I kind of wish it has been a darker, more vibrant dress and sam as with the day dress, the dabbles on the collar are just not necessary, it would have looked great without them... oh and if the mesh had been v-necked instead of round. But they look nice, I like last years dress a lot more though.
