From Looking At This Years Past Results For Serena I'm Of The Opinion That She Plays Her Best When She Is Not Match Fit I.e. Austrailian Open And Miami, She Only Played 4 Matches Before Going To Win The Austailan Open And For Miami She Had A Three Months Lay Off.

Looking At The Usopn Series, Many Of The Women Who Have Chance Of Winning The The Usopen Have Played Very Little.

Venus - 3 Or 4 Matches.
Henin - One Tournament
Sharpova - One Tournament.
Ivanovic - One Tournament

Overall Many Of The Top Woman Are Not Fully Matct Fit.

So My Moneys On Serena All The Way.

(excuse My Spelling, Cap And Grammar;))

That is why the USO series is a joke, maria played very little to win it. None of the women besides JJ played very much

Unfortunately I have to agree with you here. The USO Series on the women's side was a complete joke.

It's not always a joke, but I agree it was this year.

i hate to say it but serena wasn't playing that well at the AO, just scraping by nadia and peer, not exactly the most formidable opponents

I agree she doesn't need much match practice to win the USO.

Yea..but look at how she played in the final. You cant always expect flawless tennis in every round. Its a testament to her b/c she can play "scrappy" and still win a GS.

Correct. Serena doesn't not match practice. Probably because she prefers sitting on the couch.
But yeah, this hasn't prevented her from winning the Asustarlien Open.

A lack of match practice served her well in Wimbledon and the French open did it ?

 But if we said anything about the way henin played at the tournaments she's won there would be outcry.

She really doesn't need match play especially for this Slam. Hardcourts are her surface and after a few rounds she'll be ready to go. I just hope her thumb is alright now so she can bomb those backhands

US Opens Series for WTA was a pure joke this year.

Last year was bad, but this year was terrible.

Matches played in the US Open series (Cincinnati doesn't count)...

Bammer: 13
Mirza: 13
Dementieva: 13
Daniilidou: 12
Jankovic: 11
Schnyder: 11
Petrova: 11
Sharapova: 9
Chakvetadze: 9
Kuznetsova: 7
Ivanovic: 6
Henin: 5
V. Williams: 4
S. Williams: 0

Matches played by previous winners...

2006 Ivanovic: 12 + 1 walkover = 13
2005 Clijsters: 17
2004 Davenport: 14

You can see it's quality not quantity this year.

How come then Serena has failed to get past the quarterfinals in 8 of her last 11 Grand Slams. Was she simply lacking match fitness at the two Australian Opens she won and perhaps Wimbledon 2004 where she made the final and totally match fit for the rest?

And what about 2002/3 where she dominated tennis, was she lacking match fitness then too?

No. Serena like everyone else plays better when she is both physically fit and match fit, she needs to play herself into form like everyone else. It just happens that with her mental toughness and natural talent once in a while she gets away with her lack of preparation but as her results of the last four years show most of the time she does not.

you and me both...

THE USO Series is a joke though. I don't think that the points given for the series should be determined by what tier the tournament is. Tier 1 should be as much as Tier II... it would get more players committed to playing the tournaments and stop things like like what Sharapova did by only playing two tournaments and winning the series.
