THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WAS PHYSICAL CONDITION

NICOLE VAIDISOVA got up after recovery from mild form of glandular fever and she didn't look as professional sportswoman but like girl who do sport just in gym lessons once per week. After three weeks of exacting trainings at Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy on Florida she can say: I'm ready to return on court. Target: Flushing Meadows, New York City, at US Open, last Grandslam of season.

So Nicole, how do you feel?
I try to do maximum. I'm healthy and I fully go jogging and play tennis.

How long?
Three weeks. We started very carefully first week. I went to play for thirty minutes and even I couldn't run. I got immediately tired I had no physical condition.

How do you think you're ready to get back on court?
Nobody can guess it when I have big lack of matches. I don't know what will happen. Trainings aren't like matches.

How tough was to get back to your physical condition?
It's very weird to feel ropy. I'm used to do everything and now I had to start from zero. It was hard but not too much. I started with stretching then I wen jogging a little. After ten minutes jogging my puls was like after marathon. (laugh) I can go jogging for my 40-45 minutes for sure at the moment.

And what about confidence of your strokes?
It's very good, during 4-5 days I got back in that. The biggest problem was physical condition, not strokes.

You go to New York today for US Open which starts on Monday with big lack of matches. You were also out for a long time this year, it was before French Open where you couldn't play for one month because of right wrist injury. Which situation is tougher? Current or past?
Definitely current situation. Before French Open I could go jogging and I was completely ready to return on court but now I had to spend couple of weeks in the bed and I start from zero.

So you'll fly to New York with no pressure?
Definitely yes. I couldn't play some match for two months, I don't think about quarterfinal or semifinal. Even not about third round or fourth round. I really go here to be able to play and finish some match.

Are you hungry for tennis?
So much, it's really weird to be at home for a long time. I really enjoy to travel and play a lot of matches. But I didn't watch tennis on TV during my illness except FED CUP.

You reached quarterfinal at French Open after similar situation. Can it be the same at Flushing Meadows?
(laugh) It was definitely other situation. I really don't think about it. Definitely this will be tougher.

Maybe also because you can meet defending champion Maria Sharapova in fourth round?
I don't know it. Really. I don't know if I'm in top or bottom half of the draw. My friend just called me yesterday to tell me my first round opponent. I really don't think about Sharapova at the moment.

I don't believe for a second that she or her team didn't look at the draw when it was released.

I guess that would be hard to believe if you in the same situation would be there live for the draw.

Interesting how some players have this power to get fully fit from a chronic illness or injury in the few days before a Slam.

they probably think a slam is worth the risk even if they're not 100%

Sometimes. In other cases I think they just prefer to be on the practice court. Nicole may not be one of those cases though.

They hve to speak positively about her chances....But no way she can be ready....Mono makes you so weak, it will be months before she is at full strength again

Reading that interview I don't get the impression that Nicole is 100% at all. I get the impression that if she can play one or two competitive matches at the US Open, win or lose and she will be happy and it will be a start towards her regaining fitness. It sounds like she is eager to compete again but she sounds very realistic in her expectations. I think suggesting she is 100% is probably more than a little optimistic. Might be better just to say she is ready to compete again.

I don't believe for a second that she or her team didn't look at the draw when it was released.
many players are hugely supersticious, Molik is one of them and says she never looks at the draw, leat they jinx themselves.
