I know this is a weird/random question but I'm curious.

Maria played A.L.G. in Moscow in 2005 and was trailing 6-1/4-2 when her opponent retired. What went on here?

Thanks

What went on, as in with Maria? or with ALG?

Maria was playing poorly and ALG rolled her ankle badly if I recall correctly.

Yes Maria was getting blasted by ALG - a little like the Ivanovic match in Paris. But to do that to Maria you have to run pretty fast from side to side to get her balls back into court. Thus the tendency to overstretch and twist your ankle. A similar thing happened to Golovin in Miami the next year, for a similar reason.

Thanks! I just thought it was a weird result, Maria losing and then I figured her opponent must of have been injured quite badly.

I wasn't following the WTA back then so thanks for helping me catch up. :)

I was watch this match a few months ago. ALG had Maria dead to rights, really. Nothing special that ALG was doing, but Maria wasn't able to get anything in the court that day, and the score reflected that. Then poof. ALG was writhing on the ground at the baseline and though she got some treatment, was simply unable to continue.
