Molik Marches On

Australian fourth seed Alicia Molik has advanced to the second round of the Internationaux de Strasbourg with a straight sets win over Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin. Molik's 6/2 6/4 win was proof of her current great form.
"You know, coming into the match I knew I was favourite for sure but I was not underestimating Tati at all... She's a great player and I think we will be seeing a lot more of her in the future."

Alicia next plays Russian Anna Chakvetadze.
"Obviously, Anna is a dangerous player. She gets a lot of balls back and plays really well on the clay. Hopefully, I can continue with my form however, and advance to the quarters!"

Paszek with a WIN on Clay

http://images.derstandard.at/20070527/paszekl.jpg

"Im truly surprised" said Austrian's teenager Tamira Paszek after her first Round win against Iveta Benesova (CZE). "Last week i lost to 0 and 0 and now i was able to win a match, it's amazing. Now i will run into the first seed of the tournament and i'm expecting a two-set-loss. But i'll try everything to win a few games. Also on my favourite surface (Rebound Ace) i wasn't good at all, but Clay is my weakest surface for sure. I'm looking forward to the match tough, i want to fight for every ball!"

Krajicek Edges Dementieva, into the Round of 16

http://www.dag.nl/upload_mm/d/6/e/img-280507-112.onlineBild_440x293.jpg

Dutch tennis player Michaella Krajicek won her first match in Strasbourg in a three set thriller 4-6,7-5,7-6(2) against Elena Dementieva.

Both players were playing solid tennis in the first set where Dementieva broke her opponent's serve in the ninth game and went on to claim the first set after successfully holding her serve. The second set was also similar to the first one but this time Krajicek broke the Russian serve in the last game of the set after Dementieva missed her forehand crosscourt to level the match.

Both players continued to hold their serve in the third set and it eventually went into a tiebreak. In the tiebreak,Dementieva was leading 2-0 but her serve let her down. She became frustrated and Krajicek later won seven points in a row to seal the victory. The match ended after 3 hours and 16 minutes.

"I won another three set thriller!"said Krajicek during her post match press conference."I was actually expected to lose since clay is my worst surface. However,I really have no idea how I won this again. She(Dementieva) was certainly the better player on this surface.I just played what I could to survive in the match. My victory against Dechy definitely helped a lot in boosting my confidence I believe."continued the Dutch who is currently ranked 18 in the tour.

"Well, next match against Bremond.I realize that she is not playing as well as she was on Rebound Ace since this is also not her favourite surface. So I think I can be a threat to her.I hope I can make another upset and make it into another quarterfinal."replied Krajicek on her opponent,2nd seeded Severine Bremond in the next round.

Anna Chakvetadze is through to the quarters finals in Strasbourg. The Russian upset 4th seed, Alicia Molik in the 2nd Round. " I played a solid match, there was only two breaks of serve the whole match and luckily I got them. This is my favourite surface, so it's good to make the quarters, I also had a good run last week in Rome. I made the semis, which boosted my ranking and gave me alot of confidence."
The Russian, is playing another up and coming player Dominika Cibulkova, in the semi's "Domi is a great player, she also reaching the semi's last week in Rome, so both of us will have a lot of confidence going into it, so hopefully I can pull it of. I haven't seen her play, so I don't know anything about her game, but as long as my serve is good, and I hold, I'm sure I can find a way to beat her."
The 20 year old is playing doubles with Ashley Harkleroad in Strasbourg, the pair have had alot of success this year, winning two titles including the Australian Open," Ash and I have been playing great this year, but the clay season hasn't been great for us, hopefully that will change this week though. Winning a title her would give us great hopes going into the second Grand Slam of the year, Roland Garros, next week."
The world number 11 is looking forward to Roland Garros next week, "I love the clay, so Roland Garros will be great for me. I know I can go far in singles and doubles, hopefully I can prove it there. I know clay is my best surface, and I feel I can make the quarters or semis in singles, hopefully even better. Roland Garros, I feel, is my best chance to win a Grand Slam, but you know anything can happen. In doubles, we also have a great chance to win, we are already Grand Slam champions this season, and I know we can win more this season. Ash and I are both good on this surface so we work well together. My serve has been great these last couple of weeks, and I have been getting alot of aces, which isn't easy on Clay."

Wow! What an upset after being drubbed last week, this time around luck was on Ashley's side, and her points really are great even if Marion has one extra ace, Marion  Still a good run :p Looks like no-one can win 3 events in a row ;)

i suppose it's only a tier 3...still..what a disgusting loss. :help:

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/516/elena8.JPG

Bartoli/Dementieva d. (1) Henin/Molik 7-6(8) 6-4

Intresting game, Bartoli/Dementieva had the better points. The last game of the first set had to be decided with a coin toss, letting Bartoli/Dementieva get the first set, Henin/Molik had a bit of bad luck thats all

Tanasugarn/Dominguez Lino d. (4) Kirilenko/Paszek 6-4 6-3

The Clay court season has really turned things around for Tammy and LDL, when they were in Australia only won 1 match, and now with 1 title and in a semi. Good Job

This was shocking for me. Bremond/Mauresmo have taken Jankovic/Pennetta's ranking and it looks as if they want it back. Good Game from both Sides

Anna Chakvetadze and Ashley Harkleroad are through to the semi finals of the womens doubles in Strasbourg. The no.2 seeds beat Michaella Krajicek and Shahar Peer, in straight sets, 64 64. It was an easy match for the pair, both holding all their service games and breaking their opponents, in the 9th game of each set.

I: Hello ladies, you played a good match today?
AC: Yes, we played a solid match today. We both held our services games, which is usually very important in doubles matches. Ash and I hit alot of aces, which is always good and our serve percentages were quite high. They played a good match too, they kept attacking our 2nd serves, but we got through the services games. They never really gave us much oportunities or break points, but we fought hard, and it paid off.

I: You have had a good year so far, winning the Australian Open?
AC: Winning the Australian Open was great for us, we knew we worked well together and proved that in Australia. We also won another title in our first tournament together. It was really good winning the title at the Gold Coast. The next week though we lost in the first round, we were sorta down after that, but we picked our level up at the Aussie Open, and pulled through to win.

I: You proved yourselves on Rebound Ace, what about her on clay?
AC: Well we haven't won any tournaments on clay at all, but Clay is a tricky surface sometimes and it takes awhile to get used to it in doubles. Clay is my favourite surface on singles for sure, but doubles is a bit different and I definitely prefer Hard courts or Rebound Ace in doubles. We made the semi's of Rome last week in doubles, so we know we can win on this surface.

I: Do you think you have a shot at the title?
AC: Well everyone left in the draw, obviously has a shot at the title. But we are the no.2 seeds, so we obviously are capable of winning. I think we are the only seeds left, which is good for us and we are trying to get our number 1 ranking back. (laughs) We have it one week, then the next it's Henin and Molik, but hopefully we can keep it for the next couple of weeks.

I: You play Jankovic/Penneta next, how do you think you can do?
AC: They play well together, they are good as a team, but I'm sure we can win. We wouldn't be out there everyweek if we didn't think we had a shot. I don't think we have played them yet on clay, so it will be a good challenge, even if we lose we have had a good solid two weeks in doubles and singles, we will keep us confident going into Roland Garros, next week.

I: You both are through to the quarters in singles too.
AC: Yes, we have had a great week this week. I'm very happy to get to the quarters, in singles. I love this surface so it was great for me to get wins on it and fantastic practise for Roland Garros. I play Cibulkova in the quarters, she is a good player, she has took out some seeds these past couple of weeks, so it will be interesting to see how the match turns out tonight.
AH: I'm glad to be through to the quarters too. Dechy is a great player and the no.1 seed, so it will be tough for me, but I know I can do it, I just have to prove that today.

I: You looking forward to the grass court season?
AC: I don't play on grass that much, and I haven't in over a year, so I don't know what it will be like. I have improved alot over the past year, so it's hard to predict how it will go. After the French Open, I will go straight to England to practise, I'm not yet sure which tournaments or how many tournaments I will play, but I will try hard, to get good on grass. If I want to be a top player, I need to be good on all surfaces not just one or two, so I will practise hard to be ready. The grass season is so short, so that makes it's harder to practise on throughout the year. During the season, we play so many weeks that you just are practising on that surface and during the winter, the Australian Open is so close, that you just play on Rebound Ace or hard courts, to warm up for the start of the season. I'm looking forward to Wimbledon though, I loved watching it as a child growing up, dreaming of one day I would play there. I can't believe it has come true and I will be playing there. It would be great to play on Centre, hopefully I get the chance too.
AH: I don't really like the grass that much either, I try to avoid it as much as possible, but I love Wimbledon and hopefully I can play well there.

I: Thankyou for you time
AC: Thanks
Ah: Thankyou.

Krajicek lost to Medina Garrigues 6-4,4-6,5-7

"Well,I was expecting to lose anyway.I actually didn't even expect to win a match in this event at first. But thank god,the draw seemed to be a little kind to me as my opponents in my quarter of the draw are not very strong.I mean they are no doubt the few of the best players on tour right now but this surface is also not their most favourite. So I had the feeling that I can do my best and maybe things will be different if I at least try to play well. And it proved me right."

"I am very happy with my achievement so far.I really couldn't ask for more.Who can say proudly they have beaten No.1,2 and 6 seeds and make it into one semifinal on their worst surface?Maybe there are a couple but definitely not many.So I am pretty confident with myself at the moment."

"French Open will start next week.Although having some decent results on clay,I don't think I am a real threat to others.I still need to improve on many things.I am just hope to gain some more experience and have real nice memories with me playing on clay."

Medina Garrigues [3] def. [1] Dechy 6-7(2),6-4,7-6(5)

World #3, Anabel Medina Garrigues captured her first title this week in Strasbourg the week before Roland Garros. Anabel is by far one of the most consistent players on tour having only missed the Semifinals twice and never losing the first round. This week the 3week curse struck Marion Bartoli down early in the tournament allowing Anabel and other claycourters Dechy and Chakvetadze, to make deep runs instead. Anabel was blessed with facing Michaella Krajicek in the semifinals, Michaella is an excellent player and gave Anabel a good test, but she's not a claycourter like Anabel and the Spaniard was able to use her abilites to win the match. Not only known for consistant result she is also well known for playing consistant through each match, she is definately not an erratic player. Anabel loves long three set matches, much like today's final.

In the first set, Anabel had a 3-1 lead and chances to close it out at 5-4 and 6-5, but Nathalie showed extreme nerves and was able to get it to a tiebreak and then easily handle Medina in it. Then in the second Anabel got ahead again 4-1, Nathalie got back in the match, but wasn't able to level it back up and Anabel held onto 1 break to win the second set 6-4. Dechy collected herself during the break between sets and came out blasting winners to go up 4-0, but Anabel nevers gives up in any match and slowly but surely turned the tables and Nathalie wore out.

Anabel is excited for this victory, having some of her worst results (a round of 16 and QF) the last two weeks, she was in need of something big going into her favorite tournament next week. She's happy to be back in as one of the favorites.
