Maria has never played 3 tourneys in a row so I'm septical about the chances of seing her perform at Toronto.

Doesn't she plays in LA for the sponsors of something?

Nevermind, the draws will be TOUGH and if sh emanages to win one of these tournaments it would be a huge boost for her, definitely.

If Maria decides three tournaments is too much for her, I would rather her just play the two tier ones.

It would be amazing to have her do a complete turn around on her year and win some big tournies this summer.

Stanford  I would be thrilled if she plays but their players list is really off, only like Serena, Nicole, and JJ are playing I think.

I'm going to San Diego as well, so hopefully I can go watch her play a few times there. :D

Its very unlikely she will play 3 tournaments. I think she will defend San Diego and drop one of the other two. By the way, the San Diego field is very high quality this year, Justine and Venus are both scheduled to play.

Though last year, the field was amazing as well, the entire top 10 except for Momo signed up but when it all was said and done, Kim and Maria were basically the only big names left. Granted they played the final which was nice. :p

She has gotten critisized from all angles over this I really dont think a little bit more is going to make a difference, Im sure she is over it and plus most of the things she does are critisized so it would be nothing new. From the Russian tennis Federation too... But Maria can do what she wants in my opinion... she doesn't have to please everyone and she doesn't really have an obligation to the RTF coz its not like they invested a lot in her (did they  )... This is her career, not their's

I agree with you on this. Maria needs to tell the RTF to kiss her ass. As far as i`m concern they only see dollar signs if Maria decides to play Fed Cup, which looks even more unlikely.

She is scheduled to play there but she could withdraw at any time. Last year she pulled out pretty late (after LA) saying she was too tired and got a huge fine, if I'm not mistaken. She hasn't played in Canada for the past two years so right now no one knows if she will play or not.

Sorry we can't be more specific.:)

NOT a good draw. All the dangerous players to Maria, except JJ are in Maria's half, and not meeting one another until they come up against her. So we get Golovin 3rd round, Safina Qtr, and possible Venus Semi. What Maria need IMO is a fairly easy run back into competition.

Chakkers or Dani MAY take out Venus, and Safina and Golovin may play down to their recent standard, but these are both players who, annoyingly, often seem to play their best of the year against Maria. I'd far rather see Maria playing seeds on the opposite side of the draw like Dementieva, Bartoli. Petrova, Bondarenko or Hingis.

Xan you're too nervous for nothing. The draw is good. It's a TierI and Masha is due to beat all these players, like she's used to doing IMO. Only Venus is a really tough one.

I'm just saying it isn't a "good" draw. Maria can certainly beat these players, but there are a lot of the sort of wildcard players there who have given Maria trouble in the past.

Most players play to one level steadily, and you can virtually look at their names and say "Maria will have no trouble with her 95% of the time." A few players are more tricky and, like Venus, can be playing absolute shit for months, and then suddenly come up and start playing unbelievable - usually at just the time you don't want them to. That's why I don't really like to see such players in Maria's draw - at least not when she's not 100%. So Maria needs to be prepared just in case she does get a tough match she doesn't really expect.

So here's wishing Masha all the best - and that she will come through the draw with ease!

This draw is actually pretty hard for Maria. I thought it was fine but now I'm looking closer and there are so many dangerous players near her.

Granville: possible 2nd round opponent, taken Maria to three sets 3 times, given Maria a bagel and a breadstick! Maria is obviously a different player now but Granville is still a bit worrisome.

Morigami: possible 3rd round opponent, playing best tennis of her career right now.

Mirza: possible quarterfinal opponent, playing very well, finals of Stanford last week.

Safina: possible quarterfinal opponent, has given Maria tons of trouble before. She isn't playing the best right now though.

Chakvetadze: possible semifinal opponent, most in-form player on the tour right now. Gave Maria fits on hardcourt twice.

Venus Williams: possible semifinal opponent, very dangerous when she's playing well but she has a very negative hardcourt record with Maria.

Then the final opponent could be anyone!

The match has just ended and Maria won it 6-1, 6-3. :D Good start to the US hard court season for Maria. She did well as expected to take care of business against an opponent she should beat. Next up for her tomorrow is Tati, who hasn`t quite found her form since returning from her latest injury. However there`s always the looming spector of Tati giving Maria a tough match like she did last year at Miami and the US Open. Still i expect Maria to come out and play hard though. If she can take advantage of Tati`s lackluster at times play, then she should win it in straight sets.

Golovin seems to play very inconsistently so as long as Maria capitalizes on those opportunities, she'll be fine.

Even today, Tatiana looked to be in total control against Kremer then she loses the set 6-4. I think she's getting better but I'm still thinking Maria in 2.

I did a lot well tonight."

"I had a few lapses but I know I can improve every match. I'm hungry and I'll put in the work, but you never know when it's going to pay off."

The Russian said she was learning to deal with her shoulder problem and was optimistic about a full recovery.

"It's still not perfect, but right now I know it's not going to get any worse," she added. "If I keep doing the right things, I know it will get better."

She looks great in this new outfit too. Finally it seems to have clicked in the mind of Nike that less is indeed more.

Someone started a thread in GM about Masha's serve being different. Anyone from her forum know anything about this?

Dan23
Aug 2nd, 2007, 08:27 AM
Yep, Maria just abbreviated her action in order to try and ease the strain on her shoulder.

-------------------

"I feel good, I did all the right things," Sharapova said. "I'm moving well. But you never know how you are until you play a match. Things are going well."

"My shoulder doesn't hurt - but I'm not at 100 percent either, But I've been talking about it for so long that I feel I'm repeating myself.

"I just want to go out and play tennis," she said. "It's not getting worse and I know it will eventually get better."

I love the La Costa resort and tennis arena, it's very likeable due to it's location a bit outside the city centre. I love the atmosphere there and the intimacy it gives. I'd love to go. Unfortunately I live about 20000km away from San Diego. Slight problematic ;p

Anyway, I don't think we should be so sure.
Of course we should trust in Maria (and I will cheer for her if she plays Lena 'cause I think she needs more this title), but Patty it's okay, but Lena D when playing well is nearly close to unbeatable (anyone record her against Martina on Tokyo'06 final?? or was 05)
Besides her week server which she's already used and can send some really counter-attack shots from someone who attacks her server, Lena has great volleys and amazing groundstrokes
as fars Maria is more consistent, Lena is more talented (when she's playing at least well) IMO

I will be cheering for Maria....but hopefully not a humiliating score if final goes against Lena...against Patty I won't argue with a double bagel..

Maria needs to win and re-establish an important principle---no bad days when you just don't have it. Consistency. It is a must for the Open.

did anyone catch the short interview maria did at the end of the match today?? did she say something about Anna letting her off the hook...or something like that?

Its so awesome to see Masha dishing out these sort of scorelines. Im so happy for her that she finally seems to be finding her form and playing the demolishing kind of tennis we know she can. Well done Masha good luck in the final.

I think it's vital Maria win the San Diego title and finally win her first title of 2007 heading into the 2007 U.S. Open. If she wins San Diego her confidence will grow.

i like both elena and patty the same, but i'm actually a bit more afraid of patty than lena atm. i mean she's played really well against petrova. i dont know O_O plus masha hates her spins. lena she can kick of the court when she's playing really well.

plus schynder is serving well atm whereas masha will be able to break lena much easier. althoug you could argue that patty could get "a title omg omg omg omg omg" attacks.

maybe she'll choke.....remember Roland Garros. yes, Maria did fight like I've never seen her fight before but Patty wilted under pressure :)

Masha has a big mental edge over Patty and although Patty is playing well if it gets into a dog fight Masha's fighting qualities shouls see her through over the at times mentally fragile Patty. I really hope Masha wins her first title of the year tomorow, you can imagine how fired up she is going to be tomorow. Good luck in the final Masha

It was a good match, perhaps not the best of the tournament but still good enough to get her into the final, easily. Now she's just one step from her first title of the year. I'm hoping that she will win it. It would be so good for her confidence heading into the USO. Still confident, nervous as hell but hey that's part of it I guess.

:bounce: GO MASHA!:bounce:

Get your first title baby. It's yours!

Maria hasn't had a really tough challenge yet, she might get it from Schnyder today, she has been playing well this week.

But so has Maria, and she does have that 5-1 H2H lead.

I'm nervous though, I really want a first title of the season, don't we all

We certainly do.

Maria has done excellently so far, and the Semi has been another good win. :D :bounce:

Witrh regard to the final, Maria should have a bit of an edge with respect to this meeting being off the clay, so I'm hoping Maria will carry her form forward, and even pick it up a little.

Her serve was 68% in the Semi, with 75% winning off first serve, whioch are not bad figures.

Keep it going Maria!

Patty is a tough one! Maria woill have to deal with these angles Patty does. Her movement will be exposed to death, but maria should prevail.

This final is crucial for Maria! If she wins, that doesn't mean she will win teh US Open for sure but if she loses, it means she couldn't defend her GS title, for sure.

So she must be focus and go for it. Vamos

I thought Maria played pretty well in the SF except for that hiccup losing her serve after being up 30-0 in that game. And it would be nice to have the 6 dfs go down some more. Pity I wasn't able to stay for the final today. :( At least I can relax and watch it at home since i'm finally there. :D

Best of luck Maria! :yeah:

Oh good, finally a title for Masha this year. :D 6-2, 3-6, 6-0. :D There were some pretty damn awful errors in the second set but at least she pulled it together in the third. :D

Finally the first title of the year, and what a title it is :D

Her groundstrokes were just awesome :hearts:

Hate to be negative at this time but I feel like I have to say it, her serve is still so vulnerable, especially her second serve.

Her returns today were just  :yeah:

Really impressive tournament, now I'm even more sad that this was the last time San Diego is played

Welll done Maria! :woohoo:
