Me: Two things that people always question about you and Serena are your motivation and your fitness. We know all about your motivation, but clearly it took a lot for you to get back to where you are, fitness wise.

Venus: Yeah, i was on the thin side for a while, and i guess I still am. I just don't keep weight on too well, especially when I'm off the tour. When I was off the tour I lost a lot of weight. And I'm just working on putting that weight on, and getting muscle. That's a challenge for me. Everyone has different challenges. Just that - getting stronger and fitter. And like I said, I was starting from zero. I felt like coming from that last injury, I had to work my way up from zero to Wimbledon. My mom would tell me, step by step. You'll get there. But I don't like those steps in-between.

Me: Are we talking about gym and track work, or court work?

Venus: Just eat a lot. everyone around me, just making me eat a lot, even when I'm not hungry, just eating.

Me: so what'd you eat?

Venus: Pasta. . . you wouldn't believe how I've been putting it down this week. Today, though, I'm skipping a meal. It was just pasta and protein, anything I can put down, anything with a lot of iron in it. Like I was so tired at the French Open and couldn't understand why. So i went and got a blood test and it turned out I'm Anemic. So i put those two together and started working on my diet there - just everything, coming together.

Take some iron supplements and look for foods that are iron fortified.

Glad she found out...it's certainly a simple diet thing to fix. :yeah:

you can be surprise, how quick the human body passes to anemic to not anemic and viceversa ;)

whats anemic? is that when you need iron for the red blood cells? cause you dont have "enough" blood.?

Yeah, we noticed this at RG this year and at the 2005 USO. It is really easy to fix, but one must stay on top of it.

Wow...that is some revelation.

But this is not the first time I've heard of Venus being anaemic. She was a couple of years ago. What I don't understand is why she would allow it to recur.

Anemia, one of the more common blood disorders, occurs when the level of healthy red blood cells (RBCs) in the body becomes too low. This can lead to health problems because RBCs contain hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to the body's tissues. anemia can cause a variety of complications, including fatigue and stress on bodily organs.

Really, 'cause from the sounds of the interview
it seems as if it were "news" to her.

It often times goes undetected. It occurs most frequently in menstrating women, which Venus is. Iron is lost in the blood dischargerd when menstrating. Iron is a big part of hemoglobin, or the oxygen-carrying protein in the blood. Tiredness is often a sign of anemia. With no oxygen in the blood, one often doesn't have the same amount of energy. Eating protein and iron-fortified foods usually does the trick. Venus should probably hire a dietitian to help out with her diet when she is on and off the tour.

Being anemic isn't that bad. It can get worse, but in Venus' case, it seems to be more mild than anything.

Wow, this is indeed interesting news! I hope that Venus can keep it under control from now on because she has lost important matches because of it apparently.

Well, I certainly hope Venus keeps this under control. I'm glad she found out what was bothering her though. :)

the first time I heard about that was in 2000 after her defeat against Davenport in Linz, she was exhausted

Forget iron supplements Venus-- get yourself a bottle of black strap molasses and your iron will shoot up within days. Trust me it works (of course the taste is not appealing)

I agree. if she changes her diet accordingly, it should stay under control. It's a good thing that she found out about it before she got worse.

I've had anaemia a few times, it can make you feel very lousy - tired all the time, light headedness, fainting fits, shortness of breath...
