Some people will be healthy, some not. Since we don't know which is which, it's hard to make a pick. Objectively, you have to make Serena the favorite. But right now, there are eight or nine players with a chance.

Serena
Venus
Henin
Mauresmo
Sharapova
Kuznetsova
Jankovic
Ivanovic
Vaidisova

That list includes FIVE past champions.

We really gotta wait for the US Open series to be completed. I doubt all nine of those players are even going to be at Flushing Meadow.

If Bartoli can lose about 10 pounds in 2 months and work extremely hard on her fitness, than you can add her to the list as well.

Too early. I want to see what happens in the next two months first.

Obviously everyone in the top ten and some people in the top twenty are contenders. I think it comes down to Serena, Henin and Sharapova though.

Venus, Amelie, and Elena are my top three I want to actually win. I give Serena, Henin, Venus and Sharapova the best chance to win. However, since hardcourt is the most neutral surface, I wouldn't be surprised if any lost "early."

Should be an interesting USO.

Well Serena is on like a 12 match winning streak on hard courts, although tennis purists may not specifically condone calling rebound ace hard, it effectively is. Henin is my second favourite then Venus then...ummmmmmm maybe a serb.

still putting mauresmo in, even after her rather lousy play so far... (more is expected from her, i guess)

2005: Australian- Serena; French: Justine; Wimbledon: Venus; US Open- Kim

2007 will repeat 2005.

2007: Australian: Serena; French: Justine; Wimbledon: Venus; US Open- Belgian

So, the winner is Justine.

Its a bit premature dont you think! It'll come down to Serena, Justine, Venus (if she can pull it together). I would add Sharapova but she keeps getting destroyed by Serena  Mauresmo win a hardcourt tournament? Dont think so. Kuzzy could surprise...

That's a pretty safe list. I reckon three out of the four semi-finalist will be from the list of nine you have there.

I think since we're back to the hardcourts we can also expect a few upsets by players like Safarova, Dementieva, Peer, Safina, and Hantuchova. If the top players aren't on top they also have to watch out for Chakvetadze, Hingis, Golovin and Petrova.

The women's tour now feels like how the mens tour used to feel. The talent is so deep and although the last spots will mostly be filled by the "usuals", you still can't count out a few dangerous players.

If you want an analogy it should be Dementieva. At least she is multiple GS runner-up who (just like Clijsters) feels really good at US hardcourt events.

I agree with that. This could be Dementievas year. that one player whose gotten so far and everyone expected to win, but fell just short (I personally think she has no place in a final with that serve) but yeah if its a repeat of 2005 it'll be Dementieva....

I personally think the favorites are in this order:

Venus - If she keeps her game from Wimbledon this title is hers
Serena - you can never count her out shes got the heart of a lion
even if her game isnt quite there. if she loses some more
weight everyone should be scared
Henin - I think shes gonna be smarting from her loss at wimbledon. This could be an early exit for her, (upset of the tournament) but You cant count her out.
Hingis?????- could Hingis be the wild card? I dont think she has the abiblity to keep up anymore but you never know. its the year of comebacks again. lol if history really is repeating itself Hingis had a pretty big comeback in 05 also.... the only way for her to comeback this year is to win the US.

Other Upsets
Jelena- if she keeps her current pace she'll be burned out before the second week of the US open.
