After Marions' speech saying this is down to one man, and one man only, her dad, he broke down in tears and they hugged.

Very appreciative of each other.

It was a nice gesture by Richard.
I'm sure the one person who can understand how people have looked at Dr. Bartoli, it's Richard.

Yes. The things he did to get Marion there were unorthodox but they got her there so whose really to say they weren't right.

So true. I think Richard respects him you know, not to listen to all of federation's gibber gabber. From Marion's track record, I am already nervous for the rematch!!!

I remember them saying during the match when Serena played Marion at Nasdaq-100 2003 that Richard and Marion's father were friends. That probably explains why Richard wasn't up cheering as loudly for Venus like all the other matches.

I think Marion proved that her relationship with her dad is way better than it has often been said to be.

Indeed, this was a very touching moment showing what a class act the entire Williams family epitomize.:hearts: :)

Yeah, I thought it was good form by Richard - what I found even cuter was that after Marion thanked her dad, Bartoli leaned back into Richard for another hug for support and then sat down in tears.

One kind incident from Richard does not cancel out the outrageous comments he's had about other players for years.

richard only speaks the truth as he sees it. and that's why i like him. "outrageous" or not. most of the time, he's right.

there is obviously some tension between the williams camp and the henin/carlos camp so there is bound to be a level of trashtalking. that's just sport. and i'm not as disturbed by it as others are.

clearly, there is a certain amount of truth to what he is saying. compared to v and serena, who almost never look up in the player's box, henin does lack the mental toughness.

so for me, it's not about cancelling out - one deed over a supposedly bad deed. cuz, i didn't find the other deed to be all that horrible frankly. i found it amusing.

richard is crazy like a fox. always has been.

Yeah they must surely have a connection since they are both fathers that have been abused for their unorthodox ways of making champions out of their daughters. I thought that was very touching. Well done to both for raising two wonderful daughters that are so well rounded.

It was a nice thing to do. Mr. Bartoli appeared comfortable w/ Mr. williams. Mr. Williams has never made his comments in a vacuum. After all the negative comments from people like Justine and her coach, Michael Stitch, etc. they have every right to speak out. People treat you w/ respect probably like the Bartoli's you do likewise. Those that don't you don't. It is human nature. The moment is what it is and nothing to do w/ comments about others will change that moment.

Yes. The things he did to get Marion there were unorthodox but they got her there so whose really to say they weren't right. So true. Both of these fathers have done things their way and were often criticised for it, but they have been proven right. I think it was actually something Richard Williams said to Dr Bartoli after Marion credited him in her speech that caused Bartoli to cry. No idea what Williams said but after Marion said those nice things about him, Williams turned to Bartoli and said something else, Bartoli then started to cry and they hugged.

I have mixed feelings about the Williams clan. Serena has always rubbed me the wrong way and I simply do not enjoy the way she plays although ofcourse I can't help but respect her skill and mental toughness on the court. Venus on the otherhand I have always enjoyed watching especially when she is moving as well and volleying as well as she is now. I also find Venus a much more likable person.

But Richard....Richard is amazing. He is total class, a complete one off, a bonefide eccentric but likable, highly intelligent and sensitive at the same time. It is easy to see how a guy like that could produce two champions. He has my total respect.

And Dr Bartoli also strikes me as a likable eccentric albeit, a less extroverted one than Richard Williams. But again a very admirable man who clearly has shown a very open-minded approach to coaching his daughter while giving her much needed unconditional love at the same time. Not easy to do. It is also easy to see why these two rather unconventional but good fathers should be friendly to each other and have mutual respect for each other as well.

richard is crazy like a fox. always has been.Beautifully stated. :worship:

I've always admired and respected Richard partly because he doesn't say what's popular, but what is an obvious truth that others like to pretend doesn't exists. Seriously, how many coaches have been as successfully prophetic as Richard?

?
?
?
?

I rest my case.

So I wouldn't take the people who dislike the genius known as Richard Williams too seriously. These are the very same people who stated that he's a bad coach, or wasn't good enough to coach two women to a single title, let alone grand a single slam.
And just like ALL Williamses do, he proves 'em wrong yet again. So of course they are pissed.

Good gesture though. Richard is a cuckoo in a funny & harmless way kinda guy. He cracked me up today.

Marion's speech and the way she thanked her dad was the most touching though. Probably why her dad ended up crying.

Richard is one funny guy love or hate he is really funny and must be a fun person to be around.I think one can learn a lot from him.He likes the limelight and of his daughters Serena takes after him,Venus is so like her mother very conservative.I was touched by the way her reached out to Bartoli and that he didnt jump up and down like he did during the Henin/serena match.Today was indeed a beautiful day and happiness all round in the bartoli and williams camps.
Remember Richard telling Serena to practice for the next match on Maria that was priceless.

Jul 7th, 2007, 11:43 PM
It was very sincere and touching. Both fathers/coaches can understand what it has taken and the sacrifices they made to get to today, despite the naysayers and experts. Do it your own way! Take the road less travelled. It does make all the difference regardless of what others (the conformists) say.

And I did notice the more subdued Richard today. I can't imagine him acting as mellow if Vee had been playing anyone else apart from Serena.

I like Richard he reminds me of one of my friends dad he is really eccentric and out there but when its time to get down to business Richard is all serious then right after hes back to being the funny dad that you just love to hear tell stories about the "good ol days" lol I thought it was so nice to see them embrace that way and what was even nicer was how Bartoli and Vee credited each other and as they walked around CC and passed each other they were slappin each others hand and Bartoli's hug....... oh that really made this be the best Wimbledon for me.............. after 05 lol

The coolest thing that happened in that match. Mr. Bartoli just nodded proudly as Marion told the crowd hes was the sole reason for her great success. Then daddy Williams turned to congragulate him and said, "Hey man! Your baby girl just told the world how much you are responsible for what she's done!" And at that, Mr. Bartoli removed his glasses and let it go. I was crying right along with him. Wonderful stuff.

It can't be an accident that so many of the top players are coached by parents, especially fathers. Young women have a strong tendency to crave the approval of their fathers in ways different form boys. Young women will allow themselves to be pushed (for good or ill) by parents, and not by others. Can you imagine Maria Sharapova sitting still for a lecture after her loss to Venus the other day? Don't misunderstand, I think Yuri should have been hugging his daughter, not lecturing her so soon after that match. The point is: It is highly doubtful that Maria or most girls would allow themselves to be pushed that way for long by anyone else but a father.

i've got a very open mind on the issue of Dr Bartoli but let's not forget that players like Graf, Dokic and Pierce were very pro their fathers when they were young.

Marion gaining a high profile will be the true test of the relationship because she will become more confident and powerful than every before.

this act completely changed my opinion of Richard, I never had seen before that side of him!!

I do agree also with what someone said about the final having a good vibe, I think Marion knew Vee was going to win so she just decided to go out and throw everything she had at her and enjoy herself.

Both the girls and their fathers are quality people.
