Congrats Misa! She wins POTW for her great week in Amelia Island (even if she did eventually lose 0 & 0 :o), which saw her take out top seed Dechy on her best surface, despite not having a single ace to play, well she'll have one in Rome :yeah:

I was joking but this sort of implies that Marion only won because the seeds lost early and you hope they'll come back and win which would be a good tournament further implying that Bartoli winning wasn't good :p

No, not at all   I always say 'hopefully this will be a great tournament' in the preview ;) Marion probably would have won anyway, or been very tough to beat, it's just there were 9 walkovers in Amelia Island, so I hope there are none in Rome :p

BARTOLI QUEEN OF CLAY

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3116/b_bartoli_0601.jpg

World number 7 Marion Bartoli of France arrived last night in Rome as a serious contender after her suprise victory last week at Amelia Island.

After finishing the Australian rebound ace season 1/3 win/loss record Bartoli blew away the number 7 and number 4 seeded players to take her maiden title without dropping a set. The victory was crowned by her 6-1 6-2 thumping of Tamarine Tanasugarn in the final.

"I knew that once I made it on to clay things would be different, I have time to hit my shots and play the kind of tennis I love to play here and I can't wait to really show the ATC tour what I can do...I'm only just getting started!!"

When asked about France's dominance of the tour, Marion laughed; "Well we have now three girls in the top 10 and I think nearly all the titles this year have been won by us so it's a good feeling and we are definently the most talented country on the tour"

Lindsay arrives in Rome

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39297000/jpg/_39297446_davenport_ap300x245.jpg
Lindsay walks onto the practice courts.

Rome, ITA -- After missing last week's event in Amelia Island due to a 'minor ankle injury', Lindsay Davenport is ready to begin her clay campaign on the courts of Rome. The American has not enjoyed a particularly successful start to the season so far, and does not expect her fortunes to turn around here.

'I don't even know why we have to play on this stuff,' said an indignant Lindsay. 'But, you know, I might as well come here so I can get some appearance money and get a few points towards my ranking. The tour director threatened to kill my husband if I didn't come anyway. I'm not too bothered about going deep in these warm-ups; I'm aiming to cause the biggest shock of the season and stumble my way to the French title in a couple of weeks.'

Myskina succesful

http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Art/SPORTS/050710/050710_myskina_hmed_8a.jpg%20.hmedium.jpg

Russian upcoming player Anastasia Myskina succesfully reached the second round in the Rome tournament. She defeated the 8th seed and one of her better friends on tour, Elena Dementieva. She needed 96 minutes for her 75 75 win.The serve of both women only got worse and worse throughout the match. Both made 16 double faults, one time Myskina even served into the crowd instead into the place where she should serve.

"My serve is really being a bitch.I mean, it's like going 200 kilometres far.I decided I will start to serve underhand." says depressed Myskina, who is constantly mad about her serve."The only thing that made me feel better is that Elena made the same number of double faults as me.But otherwise she really played an awesome match, too bad she couldn't extend it into a third set, it would be an awesome match. She's a nice player, and isn't a bitch. That's why we get along - differences always get along. My plans for today are practicing the fuckin serve and toasting my victory with a few bottles of champagne.I hope I won't be drunk and will be able to play tomorrow.Because I'm sure that with a clay specialist like Pennetta I will play for 5 hours minimum. She just never gives up.Ok, got to go now, bye" has said Myskina in an interview shortly after her victory.

Chakvetadze Through To Semi's
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k89/xXxPosterGirlxXx/AnnaChakvetadze16.jpg

Anna Chakvetadze is through to the semi finals of the Tier I tournament in Rome. She beat sixth seed Safarova in the quarters 64 46 63, "It's been a great week for me, reaching the semi's. I played well today, I sort of dipped my level in the 2nd, but I came back and seeled it. I hope I can continue this form for the rest of the tournament."
The Russian plays Marion Bartoli in the semis. The Frenchwoman has been on top form this week, steam rolling her opponents and doesn't look to be slowing down. "I seen Marion play a couple of weeks ago, she was good but wasn't in this type of form. She has been playing brilliantly these last couple of weeks. Definitely a contender for Roland Garros. Her serve is very good and from what I seen, she hits a lot of aces. This is my favourite surface, and I think it's hers too, so it will be good to see the outcome. I seen her match against Ashley today and she played really well, all her shots were going in, she caught the lines alot, hopefully I can keep up with her tomorrow."
The 20 year old, is currently ranked no.1 in the world with the American Harkleroad, they have already won two titles this year, including the Australian Open. "I have had alot of success this year in doubles with Ashley. It's great to be ranked no.1 in doubles, I think we will drop to no.2 next week, but we our playing well, and hopefully it will continue. It was great to win my first Grand Slam, at the Australian Open, I loved playing there and I can't wait to go back next year. Hopefully there is more Slams to come. It would be great to have success in singles and doubles but we are already out of doubles this week, so I will be focusing on my semi match for the next couple of days."

Bartoli's reign continues

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3116/mb6.JPG

Self proclaimed Queen of clay Marion Bartoli of France today demolished American Ashley Harkleroad 6-1 6-2 in just under an hour in an impressive display of her clay court ability and dominance.

The Frenchwoman never allowed Harkleroad into the match, racing to a 4-0 lead before Harkleroad held serve to win her soul game of the first set. A devestating cross court backhand sealed the set for the 7th seed, 6-1. The second was a mirror of the first with Bartoli racing out to an early lead, closing out the match in impressive fashion, 6-1 6-2.

After the match Bartoli smiled and laughed with fans as she signed autographs and took photos with the crowd that had gathered around the players entrance to greet her.

"It's quite overwhelming in a way, bursting onto the seen as I have it's been a bit of a suprise to suddenly have so many fans but it's fantastic, I feel a lot of support from the Italian fans and also all the people who made the trip from France to be here and support me, their presence is touching."

Asked about her 1/2 finale opponent, Marion was confident but cautious.

"The match I played against her was the toughest I played last week in the second round at Amelia Island 6-4 6-3 I think it was...so I know that she isn't going to be easy, she mixes up the ball well and has good retreaval skills so I'm going to have to put pressure on her serve and really go for my shots...I'm confident but in this game you never underestimate your opponent."

"I think it's great that the girls who love clay are making their way up the rankings now and it shows in that I am the only seed still alive in this tournament, I think by Roland Garros we will see a new kind of top ten developing and that's very exciting"

"I'm just happy to be in the top ten were I feel like I belong and I'm anxious to make it an all French top 3!"
