I really hope she plays, she has like 10 days off from when she lost to next weekend. That's definately enough time to recover!

I don't think Serena will be there (injury) , but it will be a good time to get some revenge on Venus.

I read somewhere a while back that Maria wouldn't be able to play for Russia in the Olympics if she didn't play for them in Fed Cup this year.....any idea if this is true? I'm kind of hoping it isn't because it may pressure her into playing even if she isn't 100%

No she doesn't have to play, just make herself available for the team.

But Tarpischev said that Maria wont play at the Olympics if she doesnt experience being part of the team.

The ideal for Maria would be for Venus and Serena to be unavailable for Fed Cup because of their injuries. Then she would play King and someone else who wouldnt be any trouble. This would be better for Maria since there would be less pressure and the matches would be less intense.

I`m pretty sure that Maria would much rather play either Venus or Serena, mainly to exercise the demons from the defeats she has taken from them.

Sharapova, Kuznetsova Pull Out of Fed Cup Semis
The Russian national tennis team has lost its two top players ahead of a Fed Cup semi-final against the United States on July 14 and 15. Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova have to pull out because of injuries, Russian Fed Cup captain Shamil Tarpishchev told the Ves Sport news agency on Monday.
“We talked to Sveta [Kuznetsova] yesterday. She is now going through medical tests in Spain,” Shamil Tarpishchev said. “We don’t know yet how serious her injury is.”

Maria Sharapova will have to join Kuznetsova on the sidelines because of a shoulder injury. “She is going to have some rest in the next ten days,” the Russian captain told reporters. “I would say it is in her interest to play for Russia. I’m sure of this.”

World number two Maria Sharapova has never played for her country in the Fed Cup. She won’t be allowed to compete at the 2008 Olympics if she does not play a match for Russia before that.

Russia is going to Vermont, the United States, with world top 10 players Nadia Petrova and Anna Chakvetadze along with Elena Vesnina and Alla Kudryavtseva. Kudryavtseva, 19, is to make a debut in the national squad. Tarpishchev says he had to ask Kudryavtseva to replace a long-time national player Elena Dementieva who is now not in her best shape.

Venus and Serena Williams will lead the U.S. team along with Lisa Raymond and Vania King at the July 14-15 tie in Vermont.

MARIA WITHDRAWS FROM FED CUP

Over the past 48 hours I have consulted with my medical team and I have been advised that I need to rest my shoulder for the next 10 days with no activity. This will mean that I will have to once again withdraw from Fed Cup. All the scans and test show improvement in my shoulder but I still have a tremendous amount of swelling in the area. Since having another cortisone shot in 2007 is not an option for me, I need to monitor my shoulder at all times.

I know this withdrawl is very frustrating for all my Russian fans, but I promise you it is way more frustrating for me. Nothing would of made me happier then beating the Americans on American soil. The good news is that Russia still has an amazing team and I believe they will still have a very good chance to win the match.

was a very serious injury, she is not playing her best or serving what she can since then

Not just GM that are attacking her

From BBC

Russia's chief tennis coach Vladimir Kamelzon accused Sharapova's entourage of discouraging her from playing for her native country.

"Her closest advisers are Americans and they would never allow her to play for Russia," Kamelzon told the daily Izvestia. "I'm telling you, just forget about all these promises."

Maria obviously doesn't have a mind of her own  Bottom line is Maria isn't fit to play. It isn't worth risking anything for Fed cup anyway.

During Wimbledon the doctors gave her the choice of playing and she said she would continue (who wouldn't during Wimbledon)but they Doc put her on some very very strong pain killers for her matches.

Now she still has swelling of the tissue and it's either play for Fed Cup and risk her injury being the same during the hard court season, or rest it for 10 days so that it has more time to heal!

I know which option i would pick and it's the same one as Maria!

Ok they are putting their points across in a stupid way but I'll play devil's advocate here. All I'm saying that it would be like Andy Murray (our best player just like Maria is Russia's best player) refusing to play Davis Cup. That would upset an awful lot of people over here, believe me.

I don't think Maria will be asked again to play...and even if she is after those comments I don't think she would consider playing for Russia. Which gives haters more to talk about, i mean its bad enough Serena & Andy make comments about "there commitment to Fed Cup & Davis Cup" no matter what. & to be honest Maria has lived here most of her life, they should be greatful that she was supporting Sochi for the winter Olympics & was successful with helping them out with that.... what more do they what from her???

I'm amazed at the criticism and hatred Masha is facing for not playing this Fed Cup Tie for Russia against the United States. Maria deserves criticism for not pulling out of this Fed Cup Tie sooner because she wasn't going to play with an injured shoulder that's finally getting better. I don't know why she and IMG let her decision linger to the point where her fans and the Russian Tennis Federation are so dissapointed she's not playing. That was a mistake on Maria's part. But Masha's not playing this Fed Cup Tie because of her injured right shoulder is not a mistake it's the right thing to do for her career.

I don't think people realize that Masha almost had a torn right rotator cuff. That's a serious career threatening injury for a tennis player. How has Jennifer Capriati done in her comeback attempt from her shoulder problems? There hasn't been a comeback attempt for Capriati because her shoulder injury has all but eneded her career. :( Masha needs to get her shoulder healthy this year so she can still have a bright future as a tennis player.

And LOL at some Williams sisters fans for posting in so many Sharapova Fed Cup threads in GM. That's some funny stuff to read. :haha:

Im really not sure though I do think they've spent more time together than we know about. Even this year they were hanging out together during the AO....but the issue seems to have gone cold a bit, Roddick said something a while ago that made it appear Maria had given him his marching orders. Maria was hinting she had a bf then recently (during Wimby) said she didnt....and Roddick has had a gf or 2 lately yea? Not an issue to me really...of course someone like Maria would have little trouble finding a bf (or gf for that matter) if she wanted ;)

I agree. Maria needs to make herself the priority. She needs to rehab the shoulder without complicating or exacerbating the injury by playing intermittently like she is doing. I know she is probably worried about her ranking, etc., but that is just a number. If she needs to take time off to recover, she needs to do it.

It's sad that Maria has had so many injuries at such a young age. I didn't really realize that until watching some of her older matches recently. Notably, at the AO '06 match with Harkleroad, Mary Joe Fernandez, who was doing commentary for ESPN, suggested that the pec/rib injury was pretty significant, and not as minor as the press made it out to be. She said it was a huge blow to Maria's confidence, at that point (deja vu on the confidence thing), because she hadn't had to deal with a serious injury before.

I'm beginning to believe now that she may follow Clijsters' career path and be out of the game by 23 or 24. I hope not, but there's nothing more demoralizing than being injured.

I Heart Masha, unless Masha can get healthy for a couple of years I don't think she will be playing on the WTA Tour at age 25. She will have made so much money by then perhaps over 200 million dollars that she won't need to play hurt alot of the time and only be be a top 20 player that can't win grand slams. I sure hope she can cure this shoulder problem like she did her right pectoral/shoulder problem of a couple years ago.

As for the 2007 Russia/Italy Fed Cup final I don't see Masha being asked to be on the team unless there are injuries to a couple of the other top Russina's. Congrats to Russia on beating America in an exciting Fed Cup semifinal. :tennis: :)

Andy has always denied that he and Maria are dating. In fact, many fans of his know that he has been seeing another girl who lives in Austin, Texas for about a year now. Hell even Justin Gimblestob after the Australian Open in 2006 said they weren't dating in his blog.

As for Maria showing up to parties, she's gone to parties for years. Why is it an issue now? It's not like she's photographed out at Hyde every night with Paris Hilton and company. Not to mention that she has expressed no desire to be an actress or to be any part of Hollywood. She seems to realize that she's a tennis player first and foremost and that's what affords her to live the kind of life she does.

I have to jump right in here...first of all Andy does not tell the truth when it come to admitting who he's really dating....ever seen No Strings? He's asked if he's ever dated any tennis players & says nope *lie* #1, he had dated Ashley Harkleroad, she even admitting that. On the same show, asked if he was dating Maria (head bowed down) no comment, just shook his head no. Look kinda of embarressed. @ this years ESPY's after the show there's a clip of them backstage with a circle of friends, Camilla to her left, Andy to her right, Matt Leinart to his right and James Blake to his, which completes the circle. Another time during the show while an older woman was getting some award, while she's getting a standing ovation you can see Andy staring @ Maria while he's clapping.(kinda funny) They were also seated close to each other, does that mean anything....well, just that Maria & Serena were not seated close together because of the rivalry ( Jimmy Kimmel said that in an interview)& somehow Andy ends up sitting closer to Maria than Serena...his friend. hmmm I think its true either something is going on or something had gone on. Remember the comment Maria made in one of her doodles about some boys not wanting to grow up & be men. Who was she really talking about. One more thing, did anyone catch how the camera was on Andy as Maria came out to present the first award. Do they know something we don't know?

well I shall find out :drive: ...Im going to Andy's charity event in Dec. only because Maria will be there......& I will keep my eyes open & ears on alert....hehe:couple: well find out sooner or later.

finally, Andy recently was asked on The Insider on the red carpet if he was dating anyone....answer NO.....WHAT!!!!!. Didn't he just say like last month he was seeing a girl from Austin. I mean what the hell...see what I mean......my assessment of the whole thing...secret fling

Which "No Strings" are you talking about? I don't recall him ever being asked if he ever dated a tennis player. I do remember him being asked about Maria and him, once again, denying the rumors. He didn't look embarrassed to me. And he certainly never denied dating Mandy Moore or Lauren Bedford.

Maybe he said he is single on a show recently because he is? He could've broken up with that girl from Texas. It was a while since he said he was dating her.

I think it was wishful thinking on the tennis media's part. There hasn't been a superstar tennis couple since Lleyton Hewitt and Kim Clijsters broke off their engagement and they are trying to look for any hint of a potential couple taking their place. Andy and Maria are obviously friends, but I'm not convinced they've ever been more than that. Sorry.:p

I believe that Andy had a "thing" for her back in 2004 when he said that he wish he was Federer so he could take pics with Maria

I believe is more of an american thing...I mean, the only "kinda good" american dating the WTA super tennis player
would be great for the americans....

but well....I'm with you Jade
I just will believe when I see a pic of them making out

Yes Nat Andy's affection for Maria developed in 2004 after he had already dated Ashley Harkleroad and Mandy Moore. Andy was so dissapointed he didn't win Wimbledon that year because losing the final to Fefderer meant Andy wouldn't be able to go to the Champions Ball with Masha. :bigcry:

No Strings from 2006 and I never said he denied dating Bedford & Moore. As I recall he was asked if he & Maria were dating, then asked if he ever dated any tennis players followed by any actresses.
