Somebody give that guy (McEnroe) a Klondike bar.

They didn't give Venus much of a chance to do anything here, either, especially having to face Sharapova in the 4th round. Venus was only mentioned because they wanted to cover all the bases, just in case.

As long as Marion can get her ass on the court she has more than a chance to win.

Well he was just on BBC and he said not to count her out and that she had a minimal chance so, where and when did he say she had no chance?

Whatever, John! Today proved that NOTHING is set in stone!! Of course I want Venus to win but at this point, you obviously can't underestimate Ms. Bartoli.

Nobody was writing off Venus because they knew her potential, but coming in to the 4th round she was in horrible form (like 14 doubles, 30+ errors) and so everything pointed toward a Sharapova win. They have been especially gracious of Venus and Serena this tournament.

He said he would have bet his house on Justine winning.

I have been totally indignant throughout this tournament the way the BBC team ignored and then dismissed Marion.

Where are the 'experts' now?

SM4EVA

And Marion has confidence in her ability to win tommorrow.

Everyone, who plays tennis, has a 50% chance of winning, because you get a chance to serve and dictate your service game. The best players and the most successful players simply are those who maintain their own service games and exploits their opponents' to their advantage. So, stating the obvious, Marion has minimally an equal chance of winning as does Venus.

McEnroe probably also thought that she had no chance against Juju in the SF. :p

c'mon ya'll! give John a break! Of course Venus is the heavy favorite and most people would say that Venus is the heavy favorite! I however just thinks it's completely stunning and awesome having the wimbledon final being battled out between the 18th and 23rd seeds! who saw that coming!! haha

What are you talking about??? I am not patronizing anybody. All I stated was that for the most part, the commentators have been understanding of the situations that Venus and Serena have gone through for the past couple of years.

venus- 75% to win the title, big serve, experienced, game varieties.

marion- 25%, fighter, but doubt she can receive venus' average serve speed (above 120 mph > juju's average 105 mph). also she may be nervous in front of the big crowd.

One of the strengths of Marion's game is return of serve. So she has the capacity to handle it.

Hope Venus is error ridden at the start like 05 final. I desperately hope the other Bartoli, the one who loses early turns up, not that i have anything against her, Heck the girl is ballsy and i love her game, but Venus deserves greatness. Bartoli may shine in the future...

Well, she has a much better shot now than in the semis IMO. I gave her no chance to beat Justine, I would have bet tons of money on that match, well, if I was into that sort of thing. Justine is just so strong mentally in the past few years, she hardly ever loses and she is #1 in the world after all.

However, this is the final. Anything could happen. I still give Venus a huge edge in this match but Marion has really proven herself in her last few rds and for John not to notice this or realize that it makes a difference is a bit disconcerting to me.

There's always a chance. It was a slap in the face for Luke Jensen, who in ESPN said Bartoli had no chance and laughed about it, saying Justine would steam roll through into the final. But the odds are more on Venus, but you never know, this might be Bartoli's moment.

Oh please. As I've written before almost everybody writes Venus off nowadays. The only reason they give her any chance is to cover their asses because she's made them look like fools so many times in the past.

but I think the game is on Venus hands, all depends on her game and her confidence

Usually I wouldn't go with Mac....but if Venus plays as she did with Maria....
no chance at all.... maybe 2 bagels....

but if she plays litle sloopy like today thing may get complicated....still I can't see Venus not being able to handle this....

If Marion can beat so many good players to get to the final, she can also beat Venus. She seems to get under her opponents' skin and beat them while they're not even aware they are beeing beaten until it's too late. :D Almost magical. :fiery: :fiery:

The girl from Compton won't stand for crap like that. She will blow Marion away.

Venus when shes on her best is really hard to beat. But the catch is shes very erratic. I consider her one of the best but the most erratic among the current multiple grandslam holder. So bartoli has a chance, if Venus had already peaked at Ivanovic match.

Why is this a big surprise?!

It's been proven before that McEnroe doesn't know much about players ranked outside the top 10 or much in general about women's tennis.

who would ever thought bartoli had chance beating Henin?
I thought Henin would trashed in 2 straight sets.

In tennis, there is no such things as no chance.
While Venus is the overwhelming favorites, it would be a big mistake to underestimated bartoli.

You do not beat the current world number 1 and world number 3 and stand no chance against the current world number 31. That is insane logic. Yes Venus has won this tournament in the past but on this year's form, Justine and Jankovic have been the better players and Marion has vanquished them both. She must be doing something right. By the way, McEnroe did say that he'd learnt his lesson following Henin's defeat and that he he thought Marion has a chance in the final although it would be difficult for her given Venus's history & experience on the surface. That is a fair assessment. Personally I think it's a toss up. If Venus starts spraying the ball all over the place as she sometimes does, especially against opponents she knows little about, then Marion will win.

Numbers don't mean anything. Venus is always a top 5 player whenever she comes on court.

Marion's had a fantastic event, but realistically speaking, she stands very little if any chance at all in the final. Venus has won three titles here. Marion's big wins have been against players who have never won Wimbledon. Moreover, Venus is playing an amazing quality of tennis. Marion won't be able to get on to Venus' serve and will be extremely intimidated by the persona that Venus Williams will bring to the court.

It's too bad, really. I'll be rooting like crazy for Marion, but I fear she might suffer a letdown and lose 6-0, 6-1 in 27 minutes or something.

Marion has beaten the world number 1 and 6 time grand slam champion and the world number 3 who has won a lot of tournaments this year. Also Marion is the higher ranked player than Venus. What happened 2 years ago will count for very little today. What matters is how a player is playing CURRENTLY and Marion has played incredibly well to beat all the players she has beaten. Venus has lost to lesser players than Bartoli before, so it could happen. Anyone who writes Bartoli off is being foolish or perhaps is a superstitious person trying to jinx Venus. The fact of the matter is that BOTH players have done incredibly well against the odds to reach this stage and the final could go either way.

John Mcenroe has been overtly known to love JHH , he even wrote about it in his book or something, so he praises JHH to no end whenever he can, so I'm not surprised about the betting comment. As for Marion v.s. Venus, he's being a little cocky, but he knows the odds lie with Venus, so he must as well sound like he knows what he's talking about to the general population if he's going to give a prediction I suppose.
