The obvious smart-aleck answer is "whoever wins seven matches," but this really is a good question. Serena Williams owns Rod Laver Arena (three Australian Open titles in the last five years), Justine Henin owns Court Philippe Chatrier (four Roland Garros titles in the last five years, including the last three in a row), Venus Williams owns Centre Court (six Wimbledon finals in the last eight years), but no one has claimed the deed to Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Will repeat what happened in 2005.

2005- Australian- Serena, French- Justine, Wimbledon- Venus, US Open- Kim;
2007- Australian- Serena, French- Justine, Wimbledon- Venus, US Open- Belgian.

So, Justine will win US Open 2007.

Well looking at the list of great players out there:

Serena - My favourite, will be hungry to avenge disappointing results after her AO triumph. Moves better on hardcours than either grass or clay. Serve will greatly benefit from the speedy surface and she likes the night matches and all the drama of the home support.

Justine - Runner up - If the draw allows. Fiesty little Belgian that she is expect Henin to at least make the final, she's making a habit of winning, want's to prove she's not a one trick pony, by winning her first slam off clay in over 3 1/2 years. Great movement will benefit her, however may be overwhlemed by the power of the Williams sisters and Sharapova if they are healthy.

Venus Williams - Either runner up or losing semi finalist probably to sister Serena - Awesome serve and in my view undisputably th best mover on all surfaces other than clay. Her forehand looks much more consistent these days, and her backhand is still probably the best in the game along with Serena's (Double handed).

Maria Sharapova - Convincing loss in the semi to a big gun. Always in with a chance of course, she moves best on hard courts, although still slightly below the best. Great surface for her, she likes the medium to high bouncing ball. Question being - Does she have the health and the confidence to pull off another title. She failed to defend her first Major, i see her failing to defend this one, in similar fashion.

Ivanovic, Vaidisova, Jankovic and Mauresmo will all do well also, Momo certainly won't win the tournie, as the fats surface is exceptionally detrimental to her game. Jankovic still hasn't proven that she has it between the ears, nor has Ivanovic or Vaidisova.

Outside threats = Bartoli, hard not to mention her really, she should be full of confidence. Also Hingis and Kuznetsova, can't see either getting beyond the quarters, especially Hingis, unless they have a favourable draw. Same with Dementieva, Petrova, Golovin, Chakvetadze, Peer, Safina, Hantuchova, Safarova, Bammer.

Jelena will be hungry to defend her points and get even better. i think US Open courts suit her well...she is fast..and she is hitting the ball even harder then last year, she'll not be too passive as she was on grass. And with the bounce being cleaner then on clay or grass, those backhands down the line will crack the hardest.

Ana- well its all up on her serve. If her serve shows up all her other weapon show up, and then she's unbeatable...but keeping her first serve percentage on her usual 45-50% will get her to quarters most. Work on your serve Ana!

Chaky will be dangerous too...

i think Mauresmo is done really, Henin will want the title as bad as Serena...Venus will choke on her way to later rounds. Na Li could be a tough cookie to beat if she's healthy, Maria is on the downslide

so quarterfinal line up

Justine-Serena
Jelena-Chaky
Maria-Ana
Kuznetsova-Na Li

not going further cause of jinx

It's (A) overtly Presumptuous to predict Ana could produce all her weapons at any given time and (B) wrong to say that would mean she would be unbeatable. Henin could clearly outsmart her by moving her all over the place and mixing up the play, Serena could still out serve her and Venus out move her whilst rallying with her from the back.

Chaky isn't in my estimation a realistic threat for any big titles, she has no stand out weapon, she seems, to be a less talented Hingis duplicate.

Jelena is a ton more likely to choke than Venus, and Momo isn;t finsihed yet, she simply doesn;t have the big game to win the US Open as some do.

Way too early to evaluate the US Open field. If I had to take one player now, it would be Henin.

Long shots would be Ivanovic and Jankovic . We don't know what Serena and Venus will be up to 2 months from now.

I like Jankovic chances in Australia because come January there's always some top players with injury and lack of match preparation issues.

The William's sister's frustrate me. First, I can never bet against them, but injuries always make it impossible for me to bet real dollars on them -- only pretend.

IF IF IF IF Serena is in fit condition, she's number 1 to take home the victory in my opinion (sorry Venus). I won't rule Venus out either.

But I'm HOPING that Jelena Jankovic will FINALLY live up to my predictions of a year ago, and finally get her act together and win a grandslam title.

If Shrieky is really injured, what's going to change between now and the US Open to make her shoulder better, when its not gotten better between the AO and now? Either she's faking it or its real! So I can't put any dolares behind her (assuming she's telling the truth about her shoulder).

The Mighty Midget (Henin) is always a contender in my opinion.

I can't pick a winner until I know more about the health and fitness of Serena.

Dementieva always seems to play well in New York so I wouldn't be shocked to see her make a run to the quarters or semis

Jankovic will probably make the semis
Justine will be tough to beat
and of course there's always Venus & Serena

It'll be Justine, Serena, or Venus imo.

1. I'm with you in regards to the Williams sisters, my friend. Every discussion about them seems to begin with a disclaimer: "IF they're healthy AND motivated, they're the best in the game." When you're THAT good, how could you even think of doing anything else? I don't get it.

2. Maria Sharapova IS really injured, and she didn't do herself any favors with those cortisone injections. If I were Yuri, I'd shut her down for the rest of this year and repair the problem before it becomes irreparable (see: Stevenson, Alexandra).

3. If Jelena Jankovic and Nicole Vaidisova ever get it together between the ears, the rest of the tour will be in BIG trouble.

And although Kuzzie has actually won it, I still put her in the second tier favorites category.

Depending on the draw of course, my crystal ball says Williams vs. Williams or V. Williams vs. Henin final. :lick:

I'd love to see a revenge beatdown by Serena of Justine in the semis and a Venus (just for the hell of it) beatdown of Maria in the semis to set up an all Williams final. But a Serena 6-0,6-0 drubbing of Maria and Venus eigth consecutive win over Justine would be just as satisfying!

Serena is the best hardcourt player on tour....If she plays 2 or 3 events this summer she'll win the Open....Same goes for Venus, with a good summer of preparation, she can win if she doesn't have to play Serena....Henin is not a great hardcourt player....She will not win in New York...There will be a better player there to put her down...Maria can win if she can avoid playing a player named Williams...Ivanovic is good enough to win...But is she strong enough mentally....I love Nicole Vaidisova...But she is simply not ready...Jankovic has the game to win it...But something is always spinning out of control between her ears...Mauresmo will never win in New York...She hits too many monnballs and dinks...She blocks and chips all of her returns which costs her control of too many points...I would love to see Bartoli do well...Not sure how her game will do on a fast hardcourt...Her history in New York is not impressive...Lucie Safarova has the skills to win...But she is not the smartest player on tour by a long stratch
