View Full Version : Why are SOME people so keen on knocking Marion...?

I think she's entertaining; and a refreshing breath of fresh air in the womens game... And I would suggest that any neutral who wasn't moved by her win this evening either doesn't really like tennis, or doesn't have a heart...

Why are some people so keen on knocking Marion? WHY NOT? ;)

I think its because she is plump. Or, at least plumper than the average player.

So, shouldn't that be a good thing...? Daniela gets hounded by the gutter press year after year for supposedly being 'too skinny'... Now Marion gets mocked for being 'too plump'...?
What kind of message does this give out to young girls...?

Young girls aren't watching Wimbledon anyway. I see your point, but everyone has their critics.

Go Marion.

Because these people are jealous and like to make fun of Marion because she is apparently 'fat' and are just trying to fit in with other members here. Sadly they don't realise that hardly anyone finds it funny anymore. :tape:

because people would rather see a justine v venus final rather than marion v venus basically...

Maybe not; but I'm not just talking about Wimbledon... It just seems to sum up the general attitude that's all too pervasive these days...

If you want to be the best, than you've got to beat the best as they say...

So some people actually found it funny in the first place...?

I think Marion being in the final and the way she played agaist Justine today is fantastic, for someone to rise to the occasion like that is just wow and is a real boost for womans tennis. There is nothing wrong with her weight she looks far more healthier in herself than some players.

I presume so as some people wouldn't (and still can't) stop going on about it.

This is what I don't understand... Surely, all the things about her that are different from the other top professionals should make her MORE popular, not less... Do people really want to see emotionless, robotic, spoilt teenage girls battling it out in years to come...?

The people who knock Marion are all fat asses. They dislike that about themselves so they pick on her for it. It's all very Freudian.

it's only interesting to see a breakthrough player when they've got staying power. so, boris becker winning wimbledon is cool in the end because he won some more. bartoli? well, she would probably fall into the same category as michael stich.

Can't say I disagree. Her run, while exciting and good for tennis, screams FLUKE.

But hey, it's her moment, she should be allowed to enjoy it as long as possible.

Marion is only 22... I'm not neccessary saying whether she will reach another GS final or not... Who knows?
But to write her off at this stage in her career is ludicrous...? Would people be writing off 22-year old Jelena Jankovic if she had just beaten Henin and reached the final...?

Even if that's true, that would put Bartoli ahead of 99.99999 percent of all the women who have ever played professional tennis.

You can't really compare Jelena and Marion. Jelena's been consistent all year long and has won a few titles along the way. Marion is having a great run at a Slam and has some decent results at a few tournements prior to that, but that's only been in the past month or two.

I guess I'm being a skeptic because I've seen this too many times. A person has a dream run but never does anything to back it up in the long run. She could prove to be the exception, she could not. I'm going with the latter for now.

I need to know more about Bartoli. Like why all of a sudden, I am hearing so much about her this yr? BTW, she's been doing very well this yr. so I don't think this is a fluke. She had a good draw etc.

What has been happening to her all these years? Was she injured?
I glimpsed a story about her eating French fries, what was that about?Everything.lol. I want to know.

She beat my darling Henin, but I cannot help but be a little happy for her.

Absolute shocker! Just like everyone and his dog predicted a Justine/Roddick win.:p ...the two unlikely hero and heroine from France are singng the "Marseillaise" and flying the red white and blue flag proudly today. :worship: Unbelievable win by Marion:bounce: ....and congrats to Richard who came from behind with his wonderful display of great tennis!:hearts: :hearts:

Even John McEnroe called her overweight that´s a downright diss at women´s tennis. You simply don´t beat Jankovic and Henin if you´re overweight.

Of course Jelena is the more exceptional player; she is the same age as Marion, but has 1 less GS final appearance to her name...
I think what I mean is that their are a lot of players that 'fit the bill' amongst posters on here, and Marion isn't one of them - so when she achieves something that some of them haven't then a lot of people fell almost resentful...

It always amazes me when people snidely refer to people like Petrova, Bartoli and Serena Williams as overweight... In any other walk of life no-one would consider them to be... I guess if you don't fit the 'oh so perfect' standard of a female tennis cliche, then you'll always have some sad haters who have never achieved anything of note in their lives...

Well I'm not resentful. I don't engage in any of the childish talk that goes on too often here about how a player looks, or analyze every word they utter in a post match interview.

And you're right, she doesn't fit the bill as a popular player. But I haven't seen anything in her game that tells me that she could have longevity. Occasional dangerous floater, definitely yes, after this Wimbledon. A consistent threat, and potential champion? Not to me.

Of course I could be wrong.
