Justine beats a slow moving and semi-crippled Serena at Wimbledon in 3 difficult sets, and John Mcenroe tries to act as if she's the greatest active female player. I think Mac got a little ahead of himself, and was probably a bit disrespectful to Serena by claiming that.

I don't see Roger Federer, while ranked no.1 in the world, getting humilated by a virtually unknown, unathletic looking journeyman player seeded 18th, in the semi-final of a Grand slam.

As far as this era goes, Serena is still the top dog, by a considerable margin. Justine will probably fall behind Venus in the active players stakes,if she wins her 4th Wimbledon tommorow. And I don't see Justine ever winning Wimbledon. She was in her best form this year, and this was probably her best shot. I can't see her getting the career grand slam anymore.

Well, that depends.
Federer lost to Nalbandian, didn't he?
And everyone was calling Nalbandian Fat Dave.

She's far from being as supreme as Roger Federer.
I still think Serena's the best of the generation. Until Justine surpasses her in GS title, then she deserves it.
But last I checked, Serena has 8, Justine has 6.
And that is enough for me to believe Serena's the player of the era.

Of all the women, Justine's game is probably most similar to Fed's, but similar is as far as it goes. NO WOMAN ever can be directly compared to that man. To do so is to insult him.

Yeah I think that's why he can't win the French Open. Because "cleanliness is next to Godliness" and God doesn't like playing dirty. Ok that was really cheesy.

I don't think you can compare Nalbandian to Bartoli. Bartoli is (no disrespect intended) a relative unkown who has achieved little of significance in the sport. Nalbandian was already Wimbledon finalist when he beat Federer. He had a reputation as a big name and talented player, even if his ranking wasn't great and he looked unfit. He was always seen as an inconsistent player who could beat anyone on his day (like Safin). Bartoli had never gone beyond the 4th round of a major before this Wimbledon.

Henin was a humilated by a player that had never gone beyond the 4th round of any Grand slam. At least Fed got beaten by a previous Wimbledon finalist.

But I agree with the rest of your post.

Henin looked tired in the third set and couldnt handle Marion's onslaught.

Notice you cant find a Justine fan that was braggin on that quarterfinal much ANYWHERE on the board now lol...and now they closed my topic down....lol man i was really letting them have it....but honestly with all the trash talk aside, I have respect for Justine man...she's just a rival to my girls....so im always going tit for tat with them on here. I never thought she was a female federer though...come on now..she's playing good tennis...and i respect her for that.

Let's not forget that Bartoli beat JJ, and we knew JJ was in-form. So everyone knew she wouldn't be a pushover.
She's rising up the rankings this season and last, so calling her an unknown is like saying she's ranked 100000. Marion is also seen to be inconsistent. I mean, those bagels.
I'll give you that Marion has never reached beyond the 4th round, but to be fair, you would have said she never reached the 4th round before this year's RG.
So it's clear that she's improving.

No, I was saying that so long as Justine beat Serena, it's all that matters to me.

How can Serena be top dog if Justine just bounced her from 2 straight majors.
And Bartoli can kick Federer's butt.

I think Justine and Federer will win Wimbledon and the FO in the same years, respectfully. It's only a matter of time. :p

I agree. Justine is better if she doesn't play the week before a slam. If she wants to play a grass warm up, she should play Birmingham. We saw the same thing last year at the USO when she played New Haven the week before, then peaked in the USO qf, after that her level dropped considerably.

John McEnroe said that she's the female Federer because of her game which is quite similar to Roger's.

I can never understand why the Wimbledon organisers and the BBC treatr McEnroe like a God. McEnroe probably holds the record for being the most disrespectful player in history! He is now becoming the most disrespectful commentator in history.

Did you read his ex-wife's memoirs!!!

His opinion should not be as respected as it is in some circles.

I think Justine's game is the most beautiful to watch out of all the women, just like Roger's is out of the men. They both have great touch and the ability to hit the winner off the singlehanded backhand from all over the place.

To be honest though, it is hard for Justine to be as dominant as Roger when she is so much smaller than the other top women. It's amazing that she has done so well. I think she is definitely comparable to Federer in terms of how talented she is though. But that's just me :p

John McEnroe said that she's the female Federer because of her game which is quite similar to Roger's.

I don't think so. If McEnroe wanted to compare a male player to Justine just in terms of their game, Richard Gasquet is a more accurate comparison than Fed (like Justine, Gasquet has an arsenal of shots, but isn't one of the bigger players on the tour). But of course, calling Justine "the female Richard Gasquet" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

McEnroe said Fed, because he knew the implication that specific comparison would make (ie "If I compare her to Fed, people will know I'm calling her the greatest female tennis player of her generation, as opposed to Serena).

I don't like watching her play when she's sub par though, her game goes from one of the prettiest to utterly hideous with all those frames and shanks and doubles. Serena is the alpha female of womens tennis.

As much as I like Justine and her game, I have to agree with this...when her games works, it's really beautiful, but when it doesn't, it can get really ugly...

As for the comparison with Federer, I think the comparison is valid to some extent. Both players are clearly at no. 1, both have a variable game with a one-handed-backhand that works well on all surfaces...

She lost ONE match against a player in rare form on a surface which is not Justine's best. She's still the best female player out there.
