Morita hits flat, double-fisted (Bartoli alert :scared:) but she'll get nervous plus the court is slow (I think ). JJ won't lose to her. 6-3 6-1, if JJ has an off day. :wavey:

My thoughts exactly :tape: and there's no hawkeye :oAlves ain't THAT bad. Apart from this terrible incident with Serena, I don't recall her being involved in a huge scandal. She's not as bad as Asderaki & Załoga. These 2 are bad beyond words... not a match with them umpiring without a drama.

It's exactly that... and because she's doing that much she even manages to forget the score at times. Who would blame her!

bruce goose
Feb 7th, 2009, 03:02 PM
As for the Serena match, the more controversial call was on the far sideline instead of the baseline,so Alves may not have had a clear view.Perhaps the line judge had a gnat in her eye or merely hated Serena due to some shallow personal reason, but couldn't Capriati have simply squashed this by being honest? It seems likely a classless move on Jen's part though I'm not terribly surprised.

The WORST chair umpire,IMO,was the one in the 2003 RG semis....Serena is kinda annoying sometimes but I have to be fair with her.Henin CLEARLY raised her arm and put her hand out with a 'stop' signal to indicate that she wanted time.Even a nearsighted, retarded monkey could've seen it.Serena held back in mid-service motion and, therefore, her second serve went into the net. When the umpire called DF,Serena petitioned Henin to tell the truth and she pretended to not understand English(one reason why I say the Henin "legend" is so dubious...a REAL champion wouldn't do something so cowardly)....And then the slimy Frog fans turned on Serena and made it the worst backyard match in modern Slam history. To ME,THAT was the worst chair umpire...

I`m home now so let me tell you my impressions
This was worth every penny(or Serbian dinar:))
The atmosphere in Arena was great,we are very good audiance i tell you
We didn`t cheer or talk during the points but you should see us when Ana was facing break point :lol::lol:
About Ana`s match,in first set her backhand was amazing :worship:
She was very good in long points
She didn`t hit short balls, all her shots had depth ,she was attacking not defending
In the start of second set she had three break points but didn`t used them ,she also faced a few break points but played well in that moments
She hit 2 very good drop shots :worship:
Also there was one very good point that she won while defending :worship:
She hit a few FH near the line or on the line and the crowd went crazy
Ball toss was crazy few times but i think she served well
I didn`t really see many fist pumps only when she won 1st set
And you should see her reaction after she won match :lol:
She was so happy and ran to hag Fed Cup coach it was very funny
I saw her interview on tv a few minutes ago and she said she was so happy after she won that she didn`t know what to do(yes we saw that :)) ,and how she felt great and that the audience was great
And this is the first time she feels what it means playing in front of your own crowd and how everyone is involved and cheer for you
During Ana`s match you could always hear Ajde Ana,Ajde Srbija so in one moment someone said Ajde Japan and everyone started to laugh
JJ`s match was also good except that the japanese girl couldn`t hit the ball inside the court and always played on JJ`s BH :lol:
Also our president and some minister were watching the match (you can see them on the picture behind Ana while she is serving) what can I tell you Ana and JJ are very popular here :)

Ana played on similar level like at Melbourne... but this time she also remind on "good old Ana" which is well known (before this crisis) like one of best WTA "closers". In finishes of both sets she made full control of match after 4:4. Same thing about her serve... she has same frustrating problems... but at least this time she served best when she needs that - when she face couple BP's, or especially at Deuces.

Maybe more than this match facts is interesting some trivia:
- I think today is almost 15.000 people in "Arena", which means new FED CUP Crowd record of all time!
- Instead "AJDE" or "C'MON", today Ana use "IDEMO" (probably best translation from Serbian is "Let's Go")
- About 2-3 kilos extra in comparasion with her career best period (1st half of 2008) is not problem for her game at hardcourts.
- Ana's winning speech is little bit confuse, which is proof for me that she is really very exciting/nervous playing careers first competetive match in her home city.
- President of ITF come to Belgrade to watch this match... which is very strange that he choose WORLD GROUP 2 match instead some of WORLD GROUP 1 "showdowns" :p... but that tells as about current global rating of Serbian womens tennis. BTW president of Serbia is also there.
- If Ana and JJ are injury free or not in really big slump. i don't see anybody beating Serbs in Belgrade Arena. In eventual match against USA when both Williams plays, or Russia with Sharapova, it will be claycourt indoors where Ana and Jelena is favorites against anybody.

Thanks for the information Србија. The Fed Cup president stgated to Serbia television that he wanted t o witness this historical Fed Cup tie because of the amount of people in attendance.

Regarding Serbia’s Fed Cup standing:
1. Where would Serbia’s position be today if Serbia won all matches in April 2006 and July 2007?
2. How many more countries does Serbia have to win in order to become number one?

Next tie: SPAIN * vs Serbia

I wanted France :(

I think it's a good draw. Not he easiest... that would be Argentina. But if to play Argentina they would have to travel all around the world in the middle of the european clay season, which they clearly wouldn't like, than I guess it's better to play Spain anyway. The other good thing about this tie is that it will probably be played on clay, and both Ana and Jelena won't have to get used to hard courts and then go back to clay for the tour. I remember last year Ana complained when she arrived in Berlin that since Fed Cup was played in indoor hard she had little time to adjust and practice on clay. Both serbian girls are among the best clay courters on the tour, so it shouldn't be hard for them. Carla Suarez Navarro and Anabel Medina Garrigues can be hard to beat on clay, but I believe that both Ana and Jelena are much better players and not only can do it, but will do it.

Having said that, pity that the draw made by lot didn't allow them to play in Belgrade again.. I'm sure they were really hoping so. Anyway, they can save that for next year... finals in Belgrade! Imagine that! :worship:

3rd season in the row Serbia has TOP3 FED CUP team in world but still is not part of World Group I (TOP8). Spanish double Medina/Pascual is one of worlds very best, so Ivanovic and Jankovic must to win at least 3 out of 4 theirs singles at Spain clay.

I think Spain might just have the greatest chance of staying in World Group. Ana is not really reliable.. she can either play well or suck. And JJ.. we just also don't know with her right now. The doubles is obviously a lost point.

Serbian hope lies in the fact that these girls always seem to play well in Fed Cup.

JJ has perfect 5-0 h2h against Medina and Suarez, and Ana lose once match against Medina - but she was 16yo girl in 2004. With this shape no big surprise that Ana or JJ lose one match out of 4 singles vs Medina and Suarez... but losing 2 matches is litle bit to much. Serbia is now 60-40 favorite, instead 80-20 like it seems after draw.

Jankovic just beat Anabel Medina Garrigues and Carla Suarez Navarro in route to the Marbella title, so I think the Serbian Fed Cup team should still be the huge favorites for the tie. I mean, if JJ can keep it up, Ana would only have to win one of her matches.

C'mon Ana, it's clay! Gotta play well!

Its been a long time since i saw either of those Spanish players matches.
Past history and results with Medina Garrigues aside, whos the tougher matchup of those two players for Ana in her current form do you think?
I saw CSN's 2008 RG QF match,, and recall a one handed backhand, hits with a lot of pace from both sides. Sound about right? The more pace, the higher odds i give to Ana. I think Medina Garrigues and all her craftiness is one more likely to give Ana problems in this current form. Lets be real, Ana's ranking is higher than her level, so a couple players like this on their home country court, could be the perfect test to open the clay season.

I'm not sure who would be the tougher match up for Ana, but even in her current form, she shouldn't have much trouble with either. Unless Ana shows up being a complete UEs machine, in which case she will lose to anyone, she should beat both.

Carla Suarez Navarro is actually a fine player. She has a beautiful and very effective one handed backhand and uses a lot of angles to open up the court. She can generate a lot of pace from both wings and has an ok serve, with good placement. She is extremely inconsistent though.. so she can either show up great or be completely crap. Today's match against JJ was actually a nice match, with Jankovic using her best shot, the BH DTL, a lot. But the play was mostly being dictated by Carla, and it were her mistakes that ended up deciding the match. A lot of errors crep in her game in the third set. All credits to JJ, I thought she played well and is going back to her game. She wasn't trying to force action more than is natural to her game, and was defending well, usually with high deep lobs that were extremely hard for Suarez Navarro to handle, since she is very short. This is something Ana should use.. I have been watching some of Ana's RG matches from last year, as she was often using some high backhands to great effect. Against someone as short as Carla, it can be an important shot. The thing is, Ana will be agressive, and Carla is not the best defensive player. She can also make too many UEs. So really.. unless Ana shows up being an UEs machine, which hopefully she won't (), she shouldn't have many problems.

Anabel is crafty.. but she has not been playing well. I saw bits of her semi final match in Marbella, and I thought she didn't play as well as I've seen before. If she gets on a defensive moonballing mode, she might give Ana some problems.. but again, only if Ana is missing every second shot. Unfortunately that is posible... but I hope it won't be the case.

great report, i want to watch the Marbella final now. I have tomorrow off, so might do that.
CSN sounds about like i remembered. The only Marbella match I saw was JJ's match vs Sfar, she didnt convince me much in that match that she was getting back to her game, but im glad she did at the end of the tourney and won her first title of the year.
And offtopic, you used Lindsay Davenports phrase "..lot of errors creeping into her game." I love Lindsay's commentary, but everytime she says that about Ana im thinking when do errors 'creep' into Ana's game? They 'kick the door down, and barge in' to her game. Or a UE machine like you said.

I was following Marbella a bit. I just love clay court tennis.. it's my favorite part of the season. I thought JJ didn't play well up until the second set of the semi final. From then on, I thought she played well. Not great, but back into her confort zone and in the right direction for her IMHO. It's not like she is going to beat any top 10 player with this game yet, but she seemed a lot more confortable on court, and was improving. I think she should be satisfied with this tournament and seeking more improvement to her game.

I'm really curious to see how Ana shows up for the Fed Cup matches.. aiss..

I also really like Davenport's comments.. maybe I unconciously got that from her!

I think ana will win her singles matches in spain...i think she will feel more comfortable playing on clay, and that's what she needs now to play more relaxed on the court...

as for CSN, i have seen her play when i was at the AO, she has an excellent forehand and backhand when she has time, but if someone launches hard flat shots to her forehand, she mis hits it 70% of the time and hits it way out. She also doesn't like the ball high to her backhand. However serbia could have won before it gets to ana playing CSN (i think thats the way the draw would go) so she may not even have to play her.
I see her being able to beat anabel even if she doesn't play great...i don't see how anabel can really penetrate ana, unless its ana errornovic

Deal! Done.. ;)The men in the audience--I'm referring to the native Spaniards--will be in an awkward situation. When Ana makes a good shot, they'll instinctively re-act with lovestruck applause...and then catch themselves when they remember that she is the 'enemy' this time. They'll get angry looks from their gfs and reply,":oOops!Sorry. The applause just sort of slipped out by accident:o:o:o"

Whom did they beat last year anyway to go to the FC final
They are ok but not a very good team imo,i know they lost against Russia

i had to look up afaik.:yeah: FedCup is good for the atmospheres, its nice to see players that dont usually get much support play with a crowd supporting them. Although it says on Ana's site that this place in Lleida holds only 1800 spectators.
Its an exhibition as far im concerned, but the matches are no less competitive than a WTA match, so i like them. I dont like that they count the wins/losses in the players career stats though. Its not a big deal, just a personal peeve.

No, but the Fed Cup web has spanish TVE and serbian RTS as broadcasters of the tie. I hope there is a stream. There was no RTS stream for the tie against Japan in february, so I'm hoping for a TVE stream.

when will the tie happen? It's taking forever:oDon't hold your breath,Luca;the tie has been postponed indefinitely due to lack of interest.Tennis isn't very well-liked in Spain, anyway, and there's a MAJOR qualifying tournament for the Junior European Ice Hockey Championships that's being held that same weekend.EVERYbody in the country is trying urgently to attend that event so ticket sales for Fed Cup have been at an absolute standstill....Ice hockey is HUGELY popular in Spain,so maybe they'll re-schedule Fed Cup after Spain's U-19 team has qualified for the Euro Youth Competition

first set was shit, 24 unforced errors in 1 set :o she had 14 i think in the next set, and 13 in the final set, so she got better, and started hitting more winners

also, i think she had slightly less ball toss problems today than in recent matches...it was there, but i only saw it happen 4 or 5 times that she had to catch it

a win over a clay specialist from spain, in spain, is a good start :D

I'm lousy at creating usernames... Gaviota is spanish for seagull. In portuguese it's gaivota. The i changes position. I choose it for 2 reasons: The first is that one of my favorite books is Jonathan Livingston Seagull (in portuguese Fernão Capelo Gaivota). I first used this username in a music message board in spanish, so I used the spanish version for seagull. The second reason is that at the time they were showing on TV here an old colombian telenovela called "Café con aroma de mujer" and the main character, which I thought was awesome, had the nickname Gaviota. And the BR is for Brazil. :D;)
