:bounce: :bounce:Well done Venus. Another top ten player thoroughly beaten in straight sets. Congrats on making another Grand Slam Finals.:):clap2: :clap2:You deserve it. :bounce: :bounce:

Ivanovic sure is one pretty bitch though. No doubt she will have lots of other chances to reach the finals of Wimbledon in the future.

:aparty::aparty: :)WOOOOHOOOOOOO!!! VENUS IS IN THE FINALS !!!! WOOOOHOOO!!!!:) :aparty: :aparty:

Slow start from Ana, faster start from V. The expected little letdown when she got broken at 2-1 in the 2nd set, then those match points with Ana serving, but I liked how she eventually took care of business....

Once again (and overall), another good slam experience for Ana. She's no longer just showing promise, but also slowly fulfilling it.

Onward march, Sista!

Great fight from Ana at the end. That girl has guts. She put her first serve on all 3 MPs, and she was close at the end. Her serve costed her today. Serving on her left side was quite horrible for her, especially with the ball toss.

Anyway, Venus has to play better tomorrow is she wants to win it. Her second serve is a big liability against such good a returner as Justine. Not impressed, I have to say.

It was incredibly windy today hence Venus' serve wasn't as effective because the wind was blowing the toss everywhere. Every other serve that she went to hit she aborted as the wind was gusting everywhere...

Venus did another great job today. Hopefully Ana will gain some experience from this...she didn't play as badly as she did in the RG final. She couldn't have played any worse for a set and a half.

Ana is this player that needs to get into the groove to play well, just like Serena. Serena with all of her experience can switch on whenever she wants (see AO 3r vs Nadia), Ana still needs a little bit of help/luck. She was embarrassingly bad most of the times today, but she made Venus win it at the end, unlike in the RG final, which is the only positive I can take from this match.

At least today Ana didn't seem so paralyzingly nervous like at RG...it just wasn't her day in the end. She did hit some great shots and her defense seems to be improving. At this time next year she'll be a better player.

She's still very green, that was just a few weeks ago and a different situation in every way imaginable (surface, opponent, ambiance, climate, perhaps importance...). It usually takes players several months to a year to learn from their slam losses.

Some people keep saying how Venus is not playing like 2005. Hell, I think she is playing better than she did in 2005. The serve is jamming and the forehand is on point. I love the new racket she is using...that racket in 2005 was entirely to big.

Usually (in slams) the bigger the opponent, the better Venus plays. She's the ultimate big match player. I'd say she has a better shot at beating Bartoli in the final than Justine.

I think she underestimated Ana a little in the second set.

IMO, she's playing higher percentage tennis. Less errors but perhaps less spectacular shots as well.

True, she's also varying the depth of her shots, at times intentionally hitting short, which is a good idea against expert defenders waiting for the deep and hard, hoping to make her play another high-risk shot. It's a fine balance, though.

Also, I like that both Sveta & Ana pushed her to close

under that type of pressure on such a grand occassion,
she can hold it together, like she couldn't for that

The fact that Venus played this well and had so few errors in the windy conditions is saying a lot. Because Venus can often really rack up the unforced errors when its windy. Her serve is often wacky in windy conditions as well. She is so dialed in.

Leopold Stotch
Jul 6th, 2007, 05:34 PM
If Ana had managed to sneak the second set it would have been very interesting. There aren't more than three players that can outhit Venus and Ana is one of them. In the rallies she mostly had the upper hand (compare that to Maria who was struggling for dear life to stay in the rallies against Venus). Strategy was also excellent but she could have tried serving into the body more like Venus who smacked the serves and returns right at Ana.
Ana didn't make some of the key winner attempts today and served horribly but apart from that the signs are there that she will win a Slam very soon. Hope Venus goes on to win it. Plays much more attractive grass court tennis than Henin.

:weirdo: At people saying Ana lost because of her errors.

The better player won today Venus has more expierence and has been in a Wimbledon semi and rose to the occasion.

Ana just tanked the match and probally was nervous but Venus stepped up and thats what makes the better player even if Ana make 100 unforced errors.

Great Win Venus!!!

She's playing less spectacularly than she was in 2005. She's adding more spin and playing the percentages. She's using her spectacular defense to win matches, which is something I always wondered when she would do. :worship: Venus.

I hope its less windy during the final and we can see a Venus that's going for her shots and making them. Right now she's playing it safe which is great but now it's time to step it up a level. :lick:

And to those people who are saying Venus is a better player than Serena. I used to think that too mostly cuz Venus is so fast and so explosive. And when she's giong for her shots and making them she's almost impossible to beat.
But Serena is the ultimate solution to Venus, she likes to get ther first strike and overpower her oponents at the first or second ball. While Venus likes to rally more. Lately Serena has been backing off her shots and going for more safety and rallying more. So that's why Serena has looked less impressive than Venus in this tournament. But but Serena from AO final against Venus now and I think Serena would win. JMO

I surely wouldn't say Ana played bad today. Of course too many errors, but she certainly raised her level in the 2nd set. Some really nice shots.
If I look at 1st set from today and yesterday, I don't think that Ana played worse. It's more that Venus played way better than Nicole.
Venus put pressure on Ana at the begining and didn't make many errors.
SF is a great result of course, but she was better during Berlin and RG. This is a good match to learn from. Ana shouldn't try to play solid. She has to attack and not to defend. Movement is a thing as well.
Number 5 next Monday and for sure I'm confident for the future.

Not surprised

The fact that Venus played this well and had so few errors in the windy conditions is saying a lot. Because Venus can often really rack up the unforced errors when its windy. Her serve is often wacky in windy conditions as well. She is so dialed in.

seriously that is very amazing for Venus to do on a normal day. But on a windy day its just incredible. I can't remember the last time that Venus hit sooo few UE. it's almost unbelievable.
Great job Venus. Way to reign in your game and finally win with that amazing defense of yours. :worship:

She shut a lot of people up.

Take the title home Vee, you can do it :D

Yep Safina was supposed to beat her :tape:

Venus needs to play te way she normally does which is bludgeon the ball, unlike Serena who tries to slice n dice with Justine.

Congrats, Venus!

I haven't seen Venus' match but based on the way the earlier matches on CC went I truly believe that the wind was a major factor in the match. However Venus is not a bad wind player at all and she was able to stifle Ana before she could get back into the match.

Well, done, Venus! Please take the title now. Sorry, Justine but if you were playing anyone else in the final I'd be rooting for you to complete your career GS. However, Venus seems like she wants to tie it up with you for number of GS, so Go, Venus!

I watched the match and Venus was playing carefully because of the wind. She was trying to construct her points more and finish at the net. That's why it seemed as if her level dropped from her previous two rounds because she wasn't hitting as ferociously as she'd like to. And as a result, she had only eleven errors. Five of them being double faults. Also, thats why her second serve was punished by Ana; because Venus wanted to get her second serve in [and make Ana win the point]rather than double faulting due to the wind [ and giving the point to Ana]

But I'm glad she had experience in the wind; so if it is windy on finals day, she can adjust. Although I hope it's not windy.

She's still very green, that was just a few weeks ago and a different situation in every way imaginable (surface, opponent, ambiance, climate, perhaps importance...). It usually takes players several months to a year to learn from their slam losses.
... but she will.

Congrats Venus, after very tight 1st and 2nd rd matches she's now a real contender for the title!

We'll see if Ana has learned from that defeat. She came into the match just at the beginning of the 2nd set but wasn't cool enough to go the distance - she always thought more of Venus' reactions then her own game...

...But Serena is the ultimate solution to Venus, she likes to get ther first strike and overpower her oponents at the first or second ball. While Venus likes to rally more. Lately Serena has been backing off her shots and going for more safety and rallying more. So that's why Serena has looked less impressive than Venus in this tournament.

spot on.

All,

Yet Again, Venus played a smart - controlled and complete match. She is fine tuning her power game w/her play - and she is using her experience. I could go on and on citing Venus's attributes as it pertains to tennis - but y'all get me drift.

Btw - I had a feeling Marion would take a set - but the entire enchilada? Whoooooooooooo-hooooooooooooooooooo!

Good for Ana too. She is a great kid, and she plays well on grass and clay. She has a much better game than sharapova, and she can win Wimbledon one day.

I haven't seen the match yet, so I'll wait to see how she played. I'm hoping that the low number of winners was from being cauitous from the wind, also the 5 DF's. Anyway, I hope that tomorrow it's not windy and a gorgeous day. I want to see a well played match and some great shots.

Ana played very well in the 2nd set, not so good in the 1st, but Venus was too good. Anyway, Ana played better today than in RG final, that's a good sign. Congrats Venus:wavey:

She couldn't have played any worse for a set and a half.

Ana is this player that needs to get into the groove to play well, just like Serena. Serena with all of her experience can switch on whenever she wants (see AO 3r vs Nadia), Ana still needs a little bit of help/luck. She was embarrassingly bad most of the times today, but she made Venus win it at the end, unlike in the RG final, which is the only positive I can take from this match.

Venus played within herself for much of the match, smart yet aggressive, pace combined with depth and angles, forcing errors off her serves and strokes, remarkable winners off defensive positions, and was both eager and proficient at the net. The result: Ana was pressured from start to finish. The girl tried to raise her level to meet Venus', and she succeeded here and there, but what player not named Williams would be expected to sustain that sort of tennis? Not Maria, Not Svetlana....

horrible performance from ana. just horrible. match point was a perfect example: she got venus way out wide with an angled backhand and instead next going down the line she went crosscourt and let venus back into the point

Ivanovic isn't the sharpest oncourt thinker. She doesn't know how to string two shots together. She played her best tennis when she began hitting only FHs, to hell with everything else.

As for Brashkoala saying it was absolutely horrible i agree...for the first 4 games after which they both played about 60% of their ability, enough for Venus on grass to put Ana away comfortably enough in then end...6-0 in sets to Venus in their meetings, Vee has her number for sure. One more baby, Vee for the championships.

From what I saw and this was 3am after drinks I thought towards the second set, V's serve wasn't as strong as it was in the first set.

Hey just my observation...

I just read V's interview, lovely read. V is definitely a great role model!!!!!
