Don't know what to think about this comment from Serena on Justine.
Is she finally giving her some credit or is it just the opposite?

She played a very high-quality game, probably some of her best tennis. If I had been healthy I think I would have won, definitely.

Oh God here we go. It was a compliment followed by what the speaker belived to be the truth. Henin said the same about Miami...that she should have won...

Well at least she said that. It's still credit. But people will always disagree. Serena should be given credit for at least going out there and fighting. She could have tanked just like she did at Roland Garros.

Love it or hate it Serena believes she is the best player in the world at her best.

Is Serena "just tellin' it like it is" or she is being arrogant and ungracious in defeat? We've been having this argument for many years on this board. It will never be resolved because people are always going to see it the way they want to.

I'm torn. I know at her best Serena is the best player out there, and probably the best ever to pick up a racquet. On other hand i don't think it's a compliment to say "she played really well, but i'm better"

Agreed... she gave Justine more credit this time even though the match was closer than in Paris so... :yeah: Serena!

Just before that she said that she herself was only 40-50%. So, it sounds like a backhanded compliment to me.

What's disrespectful about it? It took three sets to take an injured Serena out.

well, I guess thats‘ somenthing. Still, she sould‘ve stopped at “She played a very high-quality game, probably some of her best tennis", but Serena will always be Serena

She was outplayed. But by then end she was giving up. Watch the last 3 games.

Anyways, she is arrogant and that's why we love her... But still she is the only one who can act this way, since she's the best [when in form] player!

I don't think it was disrespectful. She gave Justine props but still feels her best could have been beaten what Justine dished up today. That's Serena's opinion--she's allowed to have it. The same ppl who bitch and moan about her being too arrogant, etc would be the first ones to complain if Serena, or any other player, were all sweetness and light and agonizingly politically correct.

It was obviously disrespectful to say that she would have won had she been healthy. Not only an arrogant comment, but quite stupid too, considering that Justine probably wouldn't have played the same way also. But anyway, it's a sign that she's feeling threatened, or there wouldn't be a need to say such a thing.

Yeah, even though she said that Justine played well, that was probably a qualifyer for her saying that should would have won if she had been healthy... because if she admitted that Ju didn't play very well, then there is no reason to think that she couldn't have elevated her own game had she needed to.
