And their finals will keep getting better and better.
Lots of emotions during and after! Great shots! Oh boy!
Congrats to both girls! Extra bravo to Rena, the new champ, the new #1!
Jul 6th, 2002, 02:52 PM
Nah, that was a GOOD Williams final. Too uneven for it to be 'great'. However, I'm already stocking up extra video for the US Open final. If Venus can get herself together emotionally ....
Jul 6th, 2002, 02:53 PM
it's getting better!
Jul 6th, 2002, 02:55 PM
Better and better :)
I loved this match. I was just to stupid for not taping it ... Whatever, I just saw. :) I really loved
Jul 6th, 2002, 02:56 PM
I am so freaking sad.. now I'm having bad vibes against Serena.
Jul 6th, 2002, 02:58 PM
Lovely match... many amazing points that had the crowd ooing and ahhing... :D
Jul 6th, 2002, 02:58 PM
It was a good match, the shots were unbelievable. Serena played a lot better and deserved to win.:)
Jul 6th, 2002, 02:59 PM
Well, I didn't fall asleep to it this time. It is getting better. Too bad Venus didn't play better. I'm not sure what's going on w/her serve when she plays Serena, but some of her doubles were downright ugly today.
Jul 6th, 2002, 03:01 PM
1 ace! venus???????????
Jul 6th, 2002, 03:07 PM
I thought it was a great final! Unfortunately, I didn't get the outcome I wanted; but, I am very happy for Serena. Both John MacEnroe and Chris Evert said that it was a competitive match (I liked their comments today--they were good).
It will only get better, but I don't know if I will (gosh I'm sad  ). I am also starting to look at Serena as the competition. I suppose that all of these matches between the Sisters are forcing me to choose sides. Venus, please get back on top!!!!!!!!!
Jul 6th, 2002, 03:10 PM
Beat: about the 1 ace from Venus -- Venus was holding her shoulder and she kept stretching her neck -- i think she was in some kind of pain. she should have called for a trainer.
but still this was their best and most compettive match since Litpton's '99. it does keep getting better. i think Venus needs to see someone about her energy problem. she just looks like she is so drained half the time. against anyone else she would have won anyway but not against an over-energised Serena.
Jul 6th, 2002, 03:10 PM
Look at the statics, Serena played superb tennis whilst venus was a litlle bit tight.
Jul 6th, 2002, 03:12 PM
Did Venus have any aces against Henin in the semis? I seem to remember her serving well, just not aces. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Jul 6th, 2002, 03:13 PM
Venus has to go home and work on her serve. Its big but inconsistent. She doesnt own the down the middle serve like Serena.
Against most people, she can get away with her second serve, because she knows she is better in the rally, but she was going for alot against Rena.
She doesnt keep her left hand up long enuf and she tends to fall off to the side instead of into the court.
anyway...congrats to Rena :) but still :(
Jul 6th, 2002, 03:14 PM
Beat---How many aces did venus have against Henin?
I enjoyed this match! I just wish Venus would've won the first set! She really looked down at the start of the 2nd set. I think Venus needs to add a different weapon to her game to be competitive verses Serena like a serve and volley game or something. Its on to the US Open, Oh Boy! :bounce:
Jul 6th, 2002, 03:15 PM
Venus second serve has always been at best shaky, at worst horrible. Technically it is not sound at all. She has been able to get away with it for too long. Little sis will force her to become a better player.
Jul 6th, 2002, 03:18 PM
Venus has to work on her serve when she plays Serena!
Baby Sis is the true Number One player this year. Venus was pissed when she was at the net with Serena. Venus now has to work hard to defend her US Open title.
Congratulations Serena. Congratulations Venus. Congratulations Williams :)
Jul 6th, 2002, 03:50 PM
Now, I feel some competition is on the rise between the sis. Lately, Rena has been the better player but I don't think Venus will take it lightly despite loving and caring deeply for lil sis.
Those tears on Venus' cheek today said a lot. If she does step up, that will be great for women's tennis, and the sisters will leave the rest further behind.
I can't wait for US Open!
Jul 6th, 2002, 03:54 PM
This match was very competitive. Serena's on such a roll. I have to admit that I was cheering for Venus. AND I am a bit sad for her.
Jul 6th, 2002, 04:00 PM
I've heard several comments on TV describing this as the best match the Sisters have ever played. There were undoubtedly great shots throughout the match.
I think another thing that makes it better now is that everyone is getting used to seeing them play against each other. At first, I was uncomfortable watching them. Now, I have a favorite and there's no more discomfort. Hence, there's a rivalry in my mind even if they don't feel that way, and I enjoy it a lot more.
Jul 6th, 2002, 04:01 PM
A couple people said they saw Venus crying but I didn't see it at all.

the match was of better quality, but venus has to work on her second serve and forehand if she wants to beat serena. congrats to serena on the title and venus for being a gracious runner up
Jul 6th, 2002, 04:05 PM
I don't know wether it was a 'great final' but it certainly was a very high quality match - if either player had played like that against anyone else it wouldn't have lasted half as long.
Congratulations to Serena :).
Jul 6th, 2002, 04:13 PM
well, your argumentation would mean that it should be the other way around as well, no? venus CAN serve very well, and she knew she had to serve well today if she wanted to win. but she didn't.
she didn't serve one ace vs. justine, point taken, but it wasn't really necessary.
but of course it's true, serena's serve is better.
Jul 6th, 2002, 04:44 PM
SVSK - I did. She wasn't sobbing a la Jana or anything. Just a tear or two (or three) rolling down her cheeks. What would one epect, after all?
Jul 6th, 2002, 04:46 PM
i thought it was sweat honestly. i didn't see any tears. i think folks are mistaken.
Jul 6th, 2002, 04:56 PM
After the doubles match ongoing right now, I'll replay the tape and check for tears or sweats. Venus was definitely not a happy camper at the end.
Jul 6th, 2002, 04:59 PM
no she wasn't happy but i'd like more definitive evidence of crying so i'll re-check myself.
Jul 6th, 2002, 05:01 PM
Have to say it was a good match but still cna get better!
the best williams match by far!:D
Jul 6th, 2002, 06:30 PM
I thought I saw tears too.
Venus has to learn to be more aggressive against Serena. :(
That's the only way she's going to win now.
Jul 6th, 2002, 06:37 PM
I did not see any tears from Venus, but you could tell she was not a happy camper. Boy, it is going to be ON at the US Open Final, if they both get there.
Go Venus and Serena!!!
Jul 6th, 2002, 06:55 PM
A good final indeed!
This was by far the best match I've seen the Sisters play. Venus is missing the serve she used to have, or she is too inconsistant with it, and Serena was all over her the whole match. Serena played beautifully, and if Venus had a game plan, she wasn't able to execute it against lil sis, which is what most of Serena's opponents have been discovering this year.
Jul 6th, 2002, 08:15 PM
Indeed this was a very good final. They both would have beaten anyone else playing the way they did. But they are clearly the two best players in the world right now and they have to go for more against each other. Even then the UEs were way down from previous matches.
Some people were talking about coming to net. Even Venus and Serena have trouble coming to net when the ball is coming back at 100 plus mph. :D
And yes, Vee's serve was off today. Look at how she served in the doubles match. Even then Serena could not take her lightly.:D
On to the hard courts for some smaller championship trophies, then on to New York.;)
Jul 6th, 2002, 08:20 PM
will stop trying to hurt the WTA by bitching about Venus' and Serena's lackluster matches.
It seems to me that everyone who wants the women's game to flourish would help hype Venus and Serena as much as possible.
But NOOOOOOO. Every time you looked around someone was complaining about how boring their match "will be". Even former players who none of the youngsters even remember tried to tear them down and that can only make the casual fan think that the final is not worth watching.
Then again, V&S are immune to that kind of stuff because they always bring in the ratings. :)
Jul 6th, 2002, 08:27 PM
A good Venus versus Serena final is definately better, than a one-sided match like Serena v Amelie.
Jul 6th, 2002, 08:37 PM
I'm sad and angry!!! Venus has to let go her feelings and stop being so nice!!! Venus has to become Serena next time she'll face her sister (at the 2002 USO finals for example)!
Stop thinking your sister is on the other side of the net and just destroy her!!!
I want Venus to take the upper hand again!!!! And the better the faster!!!!!!!!
Jul 6th, 2002, 09:14 PM
This much I agree with
Stop thinking your sister is on the other side of the net
When the two meet again, Venus will ~hopefully~ do as you have suggested joao, doing the matches see Serena as just another opponent on the other side of the net or if that's too much Venus then just focus on the ball...
It's not over, it's only just begun
Go Team Williams - Go Venus and Go Serena!!! Still Adore You Both!!!
Though it all remain in "One Love"
Jul 6th, 2002, 09:23 PM
This was definitely the best competative match that the sisters have played against each other. I am very happy for Serena and will continue to support Venus. I hope that their matches keep getting better and better.
Jul 6th, 2002, 10:38 PM
I was really into the match. What a difference between today's final and the French!
Venus was trying, but Serena was too good. Her serve and groundstrokes were her best friends today, whilst Venus' serve and forehand let her down at some key times.
It was entertaining though and all credit to both of them. Venus does need to let the little sister thing go. Serena was just focused on the match and was quite emotional/vocal on court.
I felt so bad for Venus, but she was so classy in her speech at the end. Too funny and so supportive of her sister. I find that Venus is more concerned about Serena, than Srena is for Venus.
I just wanted to give Venus a comforting pat, this loss was hard. This was her turf. Kudos to Venus for behaving like a true champion and congrats Serena on producing a performance that truly stunned me!
Now Jen I hope you are taking notes!!! ;)

Some interesting comments outside this board about the women's final (thanks to poster Gogogirl):
Pam Shriver and Martina Navratilova said the Williams sisters produced some tennis of unprecedented quality in their Wimbledon singles final on Saturday.
Shriver was full of admiration for both players.
"At moments, the match did reach an incredible standard, which I think is what we're going to see in the future as they start to phase in their best play at the same time more and more.
"The pace of play is incredible and other players need to learn how to deal with it."
Nine-time Wimbledon champion Navratilova added: "There were moments that were worth the price of admission and there were some rallies here like we've never seen before.
Comments like that should delight all tennis lovers (not Williams fans alone).
Jul 8th, 2002, 03:50 AM
Well said Pam and Martina! :D
Jul 8th, 2002, 03:59 AM
I'm proud of the way the sisters played and I enjoyed the match. Wish the outcome had been different though
Jul 8th, 2002, 04:10 AM
For the first time, I felt bitter when Venus lost to Serena. I felt really sorry for the former Wimby champ. Now, I'm rooting for her to crush little sis at the US Open ie if they meet in the final-again!
Jul 8th, 2002, 04:16 AM
I wished I had taped this match. I think the combination of Venus wanting to defend and Serena wanting her first Wimbledon, brought out the best in them.
Can it get better? Yes, but wow they hit some great shots and the crowd was able to get into it. US Open was an ok final IMO, but the FO was way too error filled.
I have to agree I was sad Venus didn't win, but then I was happy Serena, did. She's wanted it for so long. Plus I know although Venus was sad she was also happy to see her sister win.
The US Open will produce a good match I think since V will want to defend and Serena to win again.
Can you believe Serena only has one more slam to win to have all the GS titles.
Jul 8th, 2002, 04:25 AM
I Love Both of them,,, WHo ever wins,, thats great,,,
good luck Serena,, this is ur time,, :-)
Venus Still the best,,
Jul 8th, 2002, 04:48 AM
First of all, it was a good match. Serena has been on fire all year and deserves the #1 ranking and this championship. Venus has not played particularly well this year, mainly because her serve has been out of wack. Earlier in the year her serve was just erratic - both first and second serve. She started serving better just befoer the French Open, and she served pretty well the first week of Wimby, however starting in the semi's she lost her fastball a bit (She had no aces' against Henin either). Against Serena her serve was no weapon at all - and if you can't dictate points with a strong serve, there is no way anybody can beat Serena playing well. Serena served brilliantly, comming up with a big one when in trouble, whereas Venus threw in doubles at key times. That was basically the difference - along with a couple bad missed sitters at net by Venus.
Assuming Venus regains her fastball with some rest (Serena said she had a shoulder problem which would explain the missing MPH) and can keep her second serve in the box, the US Open final should be a doozy. From the goofy, defeatist and envyous comments of Mauresmo and Henin the other day, there appears to be nothing short of injury likely to prevent such a match-up. A finals match-up of the 2 best players in the game is ALWAYS good for the game.
