View Full Version : Serena d Venus 7-6 6-3 - Venus needs to find an offense

Jul 6th, 2002, 03:49 PM
Good match, not great. Tense, some drama. At 4-3 inthe 2nd, Serena stepped it up another level and Venus couldn't respond.

Game, set, match to younger sib.

When I look at this match, and the ones previous, what really jumps out is, Venus Williams is prmarily a defensive player. It's just that most players can't both run fast enough to catch up to HER groundstrokes, and they can't hit with enough pace to force Venus to play all defense.

Serena stayed on offense no matter what Venus did. Venus had to play a lot of one handers and a lot of slices. She couldn't get Serena to back off. She couldn't hit winners past her. Her pace didn't intimidate her opponent.

Venus is looking at an out and out challenge here. Serena is not only just as talented, she's less emotionally conflicted. And this wasn't the French Open ceremony with Venus taking pictures. You could see the tears sneaking down her cheeks at one point.

Venus is going to have to let go of being Serena's caretaker. Supergirl has spread her wings and flown. Big Sister is the one who has to do something to keep up now.

lovely post Volcana. i totally agree. this was a truly competitive match between an aggressively offensive and an aggressively defensive player. it was their most competitive match to date and it was fascinating to watch the differnces in style. Venus is used to hitting one unreachable return that just doesn't come back -- but they kept coming back -- with interest! it's going to be interesting to see how their games evolve against each other as well as against other players.

congrats to Serena. and i was happy that she didn't have to deal with the condescension of the USO last year or the scene-stealing camera gimmickery of Roland Garros. it was her moment and for the most part she was allowed to enjoy it.

but venus won the sue barker post-match interview.

I never thought Serena would win Venus after that US Open final.. Serena is really surprising me this year. She only didn't grew up technically but emotionally as you said.

Venus will comeback. It's just Serena's confidence. She's the best player this year, and right now, even Venus has the weapons to defeat her. Venus' still a formidable player. Don't say she has to retire, cause she don't have to.

At some points during the match, Venus loked like Martina Hingis running down balls from side to side. She even hit a lot of 1 hand backhands. Serena was just too good today.

lol... she did win the Sue Barker interview...

But yeah, Serena is just unplayable when she just keeps punding everything so hard... you just can't doing anything. I guess Venus just has to improve her serve... that is one department Serena is clearly ahead in.

Volcana, you have hit the nail on the head, Venus has always been a much more defensive type player than Serena. Serena is permanently on attack mode; this is why from the outset of her career she has been able to give top players trouble; when playing well she is unbeatable. Lindsay and Martina both prefer to play Venus, Martina said herself that Venus prefers to rally more than Serena and that gives her a chance in the match. This is evident in the head to head (Serena leads against both Martina and Lindsay, staggeringly mastering Lindsay from the first time they met when Serena was very raw in 1998).

The difference in their mindset is also why, in their younger days Venus dominated their match-up. She played relatively prudently, was able to neutralise her sisters power (which she still does today) while Serena piled up the unforced errors. It is probably also why Richard Williams once proclaimed that Serena would eventually be the greater player; once her relentless attacking style had evolved and become consistent, she is all but unbeatable, as she is showing now.

Way ahead in, and getting better at it.

Venus' serve? It's never been sound, and it seems to be getting even worse...

Yeah... the second serve is just degenerating... really needs to work on that... first serve needs more variety like Serena's...

Like Venus said!!! Doubles is all I have left!!

I think Venus needs to add a new weapon to her game say Serve and Volley because Serena is beating her right now the baseline game. She has got to find a way to put Serena on the defensive. Unlike most other players she can handle Serena's pace, she just needs an additional weapon to put the pressure back on Serena's side of the net.

Jul 6th, 2002, 04:23 PM
Venus already has that weapon. Serena prevented her from using it.

Venus was pissed! ITS ON NOW. For the people who want to see a battle, wait until the US Open. Serena has no psychological barrier now and Venus just chucked that "caretaker" roll out the window. Venus will go all out against Serena because now Baby Sis has passed her.

after losing to serena for the third consecutive time this year, venus has to be much more aggressive from the start of the point and try to dictate all the rallies  at the moment, i don't see anyone, not even venus, stopping serena. serena is simply too good. it wouldn't shock me if serena wins the US Open and goes undefeated for the rest of the year.

I don't think she does. She does occassionally volley but it is not her first choice of attack. I think it needs to be against Serena. She needs to be more aggressive and I don't think she can hang with Serena at the back of the court for an entire match, right now.

I agree Gumbycat. I am looking forward to Sister Act IV at the US Open!:)

LOL :) she SO did !!! She must have been so disappointed and yet she still came off like the champion she is.

I was sorry to see Venus lose today - it's always sad to see a great champion play well and yet still lose the match. Hopefully she will come back strong against her sister the next time they meet.

She needs to work on her serve but today Serena was just too good.

Serena's confidence has soared versus all top players. I don't think that anyone moves Venus around the court the way that Serena did today.

Venus felt the pressure of playing the player who has played best this year so far. I really think that she lost confidence in her serve because she didn't want Serena to attack her 2nd serve.

Maybe she'll find her range this summer on the US hardcourts.

Venus once said re:Monica Seles "If I don't dictate play, she will."
Well she needs to do the same things against Serena. BE MORE AGGRESSIVE. That's the only way she's gonna beat her.

I am confident that after today's loss that is what we'll see the next time they play.

Jul 6th, 2002, 10:01 PM
BTW - Is anyone still worried about competition between #1 and #2?

Jul 6th, 2002, 10:26 PM
These posts have been very good. Venus' problem is that she has always believed that she could beat Serena. She knows better now. She has to take more chances, be more offensive minded and develop a style of play to handle Serena. Even then it might not work. In the end she may have to hope that someone takes out Serena or beat her in the head in the middle of the night. Serve and volley is not going to work. Serena's answer: Wham "Volley that!"
This Serena is too good for the other top ten players.
