...in the US anyway, for the same reason Tiger Woods is good for the game of golf. When Tiger first started dominating, many golf purists lamented how golf became so much more predictable and one-sided. But as a casual sports fan rather than a golf fan, I personally ONLY care to watch golf when Tiger is playing (especially when he's winning). Thus, he brings a lot of people to follow the game of golf.

The same thing is true with Venus and Serena. They bring a lot of casual fans to watch tennis and are great for ratings and overall attention to the sport. Over the past few weeks, Venus and Serena have been mentioned alongside the current great playersl like Shaq and Tiger Woods. In fact, one reason blamed for the poor ratings for the NBA finals was the Williams-dominated French Open among other sporting events. Even though Venus and Serena's FO final was shown taped, it drew twice as many viewers as the live men's final. Last fall, Venus and Serena's prime time US Open final drew a whopping 22 million viewers. It's not exactly like they're scaring people away.

It also helps that these two young women are great role models who will hopefully inspire many young players to take up the game of tennis who would not otherwise do so.

This is because when Venus and Serena play, as well as with Tiger, Shaq, Ronaldo et al, they bring an element of GREATNESS to the game (except when they play each other). Venus and Serena are the first great players since Graf and Seles.
And greatness is something that we should be appreciative of.

Eventually, another great player will step up. I don't know when and I don't know who. And when it happens, there will be some great tennis. Until then, however, sit back and admire these incredible athletes who are two of the best players to ever play the game of tennis.

Asmus - I love the way you lay it out why the Williams are good for the game. You make some excellent points. As you know, sports are driven by the star athletes. And the two brightest stars in the galaxy are Venus and Serena. That's one of the reasons that the casual fan will tune in to see a Williams match.

That is why the WTA will continue its growth spurt for the foreseeable future. :)

Any player or players that raises the bar in any sport is good for the game ... it makes for a more entertaining sport and more entertaining players.

I agree....they have the winning formula right now....their rivals should take this as a challenge (stop sour graping) and find a way to beat them. Definetely they can be beaten.
