If anyone deserves a thread in the new Romanian Forum, it is this girl. Monica Niculescu is currently ranked 205 in the World but will be very close to her career high of 188 when the rankings after Wimbledon come out. She is not yet 20 years old and so she still has plenty of time to get that ranking up and become a fixture within the top 100.

Personally I for one hope very much that she does. Monica is an exceptional unique talent in the tennis world as anyone who has seen will attest. Almost certainly she has the most unusual game with the top 200 (okay she 205 right now but I'm quite sure she won't be out the top 200 again for a very long time).

Describing her playing style is not easy but I will try. Both her forehand and backhand are played sometimes with one hand and sometimes with two. When she hits with two hands it usually means she is going for more pace whereas when she hits with one hand it usually means she going for an offpace shot of some kind often with underspin. She hits some very strange slices that I really couldn't begin to describe. She is also an exceptional volleyer with amazing improvisational skills and has great touch on dropshots and a nice lob. Quite simply she has so many shots at her disposal that one never knows what is coming next. It must be very hard indeed to get any sort of rhythm against her. This is just one attempt to describe the strange unusual play of Monica Niculescu but it would certainly be fun to read other descriptions of her game within this thread.

Monica is a player who should have the support of everyone who loves Women's tennis but gets tired of loads of women with the same style just wacking the ball back to each other as hard as they can. For fans who love slice and touch shots, who prefer the artistry of Fabrice Santoro to the ball bashing of most of the modern game, Monica Niculescu is the girl for you.

Lets support her in this thread, because tennis will be so much richer with someone with her unique and special skills in the mix. :worship:

I saw her play Maria Kirilenko. Her technique is very unique and it must've been a  match for Kirilenko and everyone who's played her. But all in all, her game was very fun to watch.

I think her serve needs to improve to go higher but besides that, I'm sure her skills may trouble the top players. I'm glad to see that alot of these Romanian girls aren't ballbashers.

Good luck. Monica! :wavey:

Anyway Monica has an important tournament this week in that she is the defending champion. It is a $25,000 Challenger and it is in Darmstadt. The draw doesn't seem to be out yet but it looks like she should be seeded in the top 4.

Good luck Monica. :bounce:

It looks like Monica is starting to really put her game together. Today she won the ITF in Turkey, and she won it in style too. Monica won all five of her matches in straight sets and lost only 19 games over the 10 sets. This is also her 2nd final in her last 3 events.

Next year I really do expect her to break through to the top 100 and possibly the top 50. And the top 100 will be so much richer with her original and unorthodox game in the mix. :bounce:

WOW!!! :D How about that then? :rocker:

Monica has just won her 2nd ITF in a row. Two weeks ago she lost only 19 games in 5 matches on indoor hard in Istanbul. Today she proved she can do exactly the same thing on outdoor hard, losing just 19 games in 5 matches in Port Pirie, Australia. :bigclap:

Because the manner of the victories has been so consistantly impressive I thought it would be nice just to list the entire winning streak right here as that says more than words really can as to how well this girl is playing.

Pretty impressive, I'd say.

The ITF tour must be very difficult for all the players, the costs are very high, the prize money very low. Matches are poorly attended. No one wants to be there, everyone is trying to escape onto the main tour. And it is not easy, everyone is playing for their life. But the best way to escape and get on to the riches and excitement of the main WTA tour is simply to win all your matches. This is obviously the route Monica has chosen to take. :yeah:

yea. The youtube video I saw showed her practising tons of groundstrokes but she didn't do those slices that Monica does. Anyway, from the video, it seems that Gabriela's serve is slightly better than Monica. Not sure if I can find the link, but I'd post it up if I do :)

Just regarding Monica's serve, when I last saw Monica play it was at Roehampton in the qualifying to Wimbledon. At that time Monica was actually making some very decent serves but yes she was also making some quite poor serves too. It was missing quite a bit and sometimes lacked pace. But it wasn't all bad. She hit a few aces as well.

The thing is looking at Monica's results over the past few weeks, not just the fact she is winning almost every match she is playing but even more the manner in which she is dismissing her opponents with such ease, I can't help but think all this talk about her having a weak serve could very well be something that has been sorted out over the last few months. I really don't think we would be seeing the scores she is producing if she was serving at the level shown in that otherwise highly entertaining video with Monica playing Masha. If she is still serving at that level then all I can say is the rest of her game must be scarily good right now. Either way, she appears to be on the fastlane to the top 100 and it doesn't look like she is stopping for traffic lights either.

Monica has won yet another ITF. In the final she lost only four games, winning 6-3 6-1 over yet another discombobulated opponent.

I named this thread "The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu", and Monica continues to justify the praise within that title. There are so many stats one could provide right now that reflect just how well she is playing but next year we will all get to see for ourselves as she continues to rise up the rankings and starts to compete against the world's best players on our TV's and at our favorite local tennis tournaments. :yeah:

Monica's Quotes in a romanian magazine :)

Q: What was good in 2007?

M.C. : 2007 was very interesting, maybe the most interesting for me till now ... The best thing, I say, was in the beginning of august, when I together with my coach Calin Ciorbagiou decided to make radical changes in my game. We changed the Forehand, serve and the smash, and tacticswise, I moved from a rather defensive game based on much slice to one more offensive. It's the year in which I got reinvented as a tennis player, maybe as I play also.

Petkorazzi
Jan 1st, 2008, 02:09 PM
And the 2nd one :)

Q. Whats your dream in 2008?

M.N. in the Firstly, I wish to be healthy. In the secondly, to play with the same pleasure as I did in the end of this year. Thirdly, I want to play well, and if I play well, I believe in entering top100, and then, depending on how fast I will achieve it, to "focalise" into the top50. Obviously, I gotta improve what I began. I still have a lot to work, especially on the serve and forehand, but I feel I'm not the right way. I hope 2008 will be like my coach says: "The Monica Niculescu Year".

Yes, it is good that Monica looks like she has maintained her great Autumn form. That's not always easy to do. Rodina and Wickmayer were also in great form during the Autumn and look at them now.

Still one more match to go and this one against the number one seed in qualifying, Bychkova. I think she can win but this one will be more of a challenge. And even if Monica gets into the main draw, the time to celebrate is when Monica gets her 1st main draw win. That is what I'm looking for and I think she has a good chance. :rocker:

Petkorazzi

Well as we all knew she would, Monica has made it into the main draw, defeating Bychkova, the no 1 seed in qualifying, 6-1 7-5. This is a good result but now comes the big one. The next match will be worth 60 ranking points and will take Monica comfortably within the top 120. :bounce:

Whoever Monica draws she will have a great chance. Monica has been playing great for a while now and she finally has a suitable stage to prove it. Go Monica. :rocker2:

But having finished 2nd in Group D why should Romania have to play Belarus now and what exactly were they playing for?

The Romanian team played for being ranked 5th or 7th. Even though this does not have any importance for this year's Fed cup, it should reflect for the seedings in the future. But since nothing is clearly explained on the official web site, I have no idea how important this is. And anyway, they won, so they finished the tie in 5th place, together with Hungary. When the fedcup.com ranking page will be updated, we can see if anything changed (currently Romanian is ranked 42nd).

Actually seems like it worked out nicely playing that last tie anyway. Destroying Belarus would have been just the thing for the team to get over the disappointment about just missing out to Serbia. At least Monica and Sorana will have been able to leave Hungary with a good feeling thanks to this tie.

Monica lost her 1st round qualifying match in Antwerp to Pironkova I'm afraid 6-4 6-1. Looking at the match stats all I can say is "ouch!". After playing so well and serving so well against Ivanovic in Fed Cup today's match looks like a bit of a disaster. Monica was broken 7 out of 8 times during the match and missed numerous game points throughout. Monica did break Pironkova 4 times as well but I suspect 7 dfs and no aces likely played a part in Pironkova getting broken a few times.

Clearly a bad match from Monica. On a positive note, these have been far and few inbetween over the last few months. Hopefully this was a one off and I would like to forget this happened ASAP. I'm sure Monica and everyone in her corner would feel likewise.

Great week for Monica. She played well in both singles and doubles. As for the loss to Bammer I have two thoughts. Over the last few months Monica has been winning a lot of matches. But she has been winning them by simply outclassing her clearly inferior opponents. The next challenge in her career now is to beat players who aren't clearly inferior to her but are indeed her equal. Monica has yet to display that she can squeeze out a tight three set win against a top opponent. Against both Bammer and Ivanovic, Monica showed she is good enough to play on the same level as these girls. She needs to play more tight matches against quality opposition and slowly but surely she win learn how to win some of these tight matches. But being able to do that only comes from experience.

The other thing I would like to note is that Bammer followed her three set win against Monica by beating Kuznetsova in two sets. I think this certainly indicates that Monica was right in there against a top player who herself was in form. If Monica maintains this level of play there is no doubt in my mind she is going to keep rising up the ranking at a very swift pace. :)

I think Medina Garrigues was just a tough match up for Monica, especially after Monica had played an epic three hour contest the day before. It was still a good week. Beating Kleybanova 7-5 in the 3rd coming from behind was brilliant.

I'm sure Monica will be ready to do well in Bangalore. :)

The one disappointing thing about Dubai for me is that I think Monica deserved more than 10 ranking points for her success this week with a good win over Lapushchenkova and a great win over Kleybanova. That is extremely unlucky. :(

I would have fancied Monica to make mincemeat out of any of the other three possible opponents. The only good thing is it provides Monica with a quality opponent and Monica needs to be playing players of this standard. But the way the draw was set up if she had faced anyone else she would have gotten an easy 35 points and then a challenging match.

Nevermind. Monica is playing well enough that she can be competitive against Vera and if Vera is even slightly off Monica can take her down. :rocker:

I was going to PM you this mate, but seems she has a few more fans here better say it here instead

Monica's very pleased with her current ranking and her plans all along was to play the tough asian tournaments and then have at least a fortnight off. Her sister saw her play in Bangalore and was an inspiration to her great doubles performance, to pay her back they went shopping - maybe she told the Wta that she had to withdraw with a medical after she ran into some great bargains :p

No mention of where she was at the moment, best guess is that she's still in Asia though. Also no comment about Miami.

It will be tight as to whether she even gets into Miami although I think she is in with a good chance. But if she is not there, either because she doesn't clear the cut or she is still taking a bit more time off...so be it.

I just came back from Bangalore and wow, this girl is good. :) :)

Her first serve is really good - hard and flat and against lower ranked opponents, she wins lots of free points from it. Her second serve is a lot weaker, but good enough. :)

Her backhand is her best shot. She hits it hard and with lots of topspin. Her forehand is just amazing. In one rally against Zvonareva, she hit a two handed forehand, a single handed topspin forehand, and several forehand slices before ending the shot with a lovely dropshot. Her passing shots are really solid as well.

I was really impressed. :) :)

She just needs to believe in herself that she can beat top players. After losing the second set, she just gave up.

This thread has regretably gone into a bit of a hibernation over the past month without a single entry over April. Understandable in a way as Monica's form went into a bit of a slump over April too.

But she is now back big time. :rocker:

After a tough match against Emmanuelle Gagliardi in the 1st round which she won 7-5 7-6(2) she has now killed her last two opponents both by the same devastating score of 6-0 6-2. In the 2nd round she thrashed Yevgenia Savranska, who has been in very good form all year, and today she crushed Ekaterina Bychova in the quarterfinals. Yes, make no mistake....Monica is back in the bussiness of toying with and completely overwhelming her opponents.

This most recent win is a very big one indeed because it almost certainly gets Monica a place in the main draw of Wimbledon, a tournament I believe she can do very well at. :bounce:

If Monica can beat Maret Ani tomorrow there will be a further reason to celebrate. Monica will finally join Edina, Raluca and Sorana in the top 100. :woohoo:

what tournament are we talking about? is she in the finals?

Yes I should have mentioned the tournament in my excitement.

Very sorry.

The tournament is the $100.000+H Cagnes-Sur-Mer ITF. It is the highest level ITF in existance. Monica is currently in the semifinals of the tournament against Maret Ani. She has already won 40 ranking points this week and a win against Ani will be worth an addition 15 points which will finally take her into the world's top 100.

This is a link to the tournament's thread. http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=338797

As for the qualies in Berlin, I don't know, it is a difficult situation. They might be able to postpone her 1st match until Sunday or she might have to pull out. It might depend on whether or not she wins today. Monica also has to play the doubles final as well so she has a lot to juggle. I hope she can find a way to play Berlin but it may be impossible. But if Monica can win this ITF I don't think she will mind having to miss Berlin. Cagnes-Sur-Mer would be the biggest title of her career and 75 ranking points would be the most ranking points Monica has ever won in a week.

Well Monica has followed her brilliant win of Parmentier with a gutsy three set win over 74th ranked Elena Makarova. Monica won 3-6 6-2 6-3. It was the first time since last September that Monica has come from a set down to win a match. That it happened against someone as good as Makarova is a very good sign that Monica is gaining in both confidence against top 100 players and also fighting spirit which will be very important when Monica goes up against top 100 opponents which she is going to be doing a lot more of as she will soon be a member of the top 100 herself. :worship:

If Monica can beat Jill Craybas in the 1st round she will find herself comfortably in the top 100 a week from Monday. Jill Craybas is a quality opponent but Monica is very capable of beating her and I think it is a pretty good draw.

Big match Monica. Kick some ass. :rocker2:

As for tomorrow's rankings, Monica looks like being at 111, which may or may not get her direct entry to the Wimbledon main draw. It is going to be very tight. I would really rather she got to play in another grass tournament the week before Wimbledon but if she needs to, I am sure she can qualify on grass.

Well, Azarenka was too tough but still it was a great week for Monica and this match would have been really good experience. Monica need matches against top 20 standard players in order raise her own standard. Monica didn't to too badly against Vika actually. She won a game more against her than Bammer did in the 1st round or than Dulko won against her last week. So I'm not too disappointed. Monica is still improving and she will just get better and better the more matches at this level she plays.

This week was easily the best Monica has ever played on clay, she has now shown she can play on any surface. Next week she will be in the Roland Garros qualies. Very good point. It is obviously as hard a draw as is possible but on the plus side Monica will be on TV. It will be a very important match for Monica to give a good account of herself, finally this is her chance to show the world what she can do.

Good luck Monica. Have fun and let er rip.

Oh no! :( Why??

As at last night she had no one confirmed as a doubles partner. You may remember that this was the reason why she couldn't play doubles at the Australian Open, although it was harder back then as her ranking was just outside the top 100. Its 82 at the moment.

I'm just so happy that Monica did well and showed her stuff against perhaps (with Henin gone) the best claycourter in the world.

Monica really showed today how well her game can work on the main tour. What's more she is capable of bringing something complete different the game than any other player. She is to be treasured. And in time she will be, just as Santoro is treasure in the ATP.

Exactly. Considering Jankovic is so good on clay, think of the trouble Monica could have given Sharapova had she played her today. She completely neutralised a top 5 player's game today which is very difficult to do. I just hope she establishes herself on the main tour soon. Her style is very unique, which can only be good for the tour.

This has always surprised me because in recent years the grass courts seemed to have slowed down majorly, infact it was only last week when I read an article saying that they are now slower than the Australian Open and US Open.

Backhand Slices, Forehand Slices, Drop Shots and Volleys are top shots on Grass! The only thing Monica lacks on Grass courts is a great serve.

I hope Monica plays doubles with Marina in Wimbledon. As far as I know Marinas agreement with Misa isn't in effect anymore. But I'm really unsure at the moment

Marina and Monica haven't played together since they easily won 75k Dubai last year. Marina and Monica played something like a dozen ITF doubles tournaments together as well as a couple of European money tournaments. So already have teamwork there.

Oh and by the way from what I understand Marina wanted to focus on singles this week and so Misa was left without a partner. Monica had no partner (as usual :awww:) so she was pretty much handed Misa

I agree with this post 100%.

Monica's game is good for grass. It's excellent for grass. But there are other people out there who also have excellent games for grass and Tammy is one of them. She has shown it many times before and as you say she does have an absolutely outstanding record at Wimbledon. Tammy is probably the most experienced player on grass in the tournament. So if anyone would have been able to deal with Monica's low bouncing slices it would have been Tammy.

Bad draw, plain and simple.

It would have been nice if Monica got a win here but I still expect very good things at Wimbledon.

Oh and if Monica and Marina can pair up for Wimbledon and in the future the two of them could really do brilliantly together. Give them a year together and I think they would be one of the top 10 teams in the world.

Marina and Monica would have a very good chance of going deep into the doubles draw at Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open. So by February 2009 they could theoretically be a top 10 pair if not higher. Both are improving so much this year, it would be a shame if Misa Krajicek (who is on an incredibly long losing streak) would break them apart. If Misa does then :armed::p

Lots of good news regarding Monica over the last 24 hours. Okay Monica and Misa lost against Bremond and Ruano-Pascual. Not bad news really because that means that Monica will be able to play the qualifying of Eastbourne. :D

Monica's section of the draw is like this:

(4)Akgul Amanmuradova
Selima Sfar
Monica Niculescu
Tatiana Poutchek
Olga Savchuk
Ayum Morita
Alla Kudryavtseva
(6)Timea Bacsinszky

I see no reason Monica can't qualify from that. :)

Also great news is that Monica has now made the main draw of Wimbledon after being the next one in for ages upon ages. So Monica can get a few matches in this week and then she will be ready to kick ass at Wimbledon. :bounce:

That was not good. Monica lost her 1st round qualifying match in Eastbourne to Tatiana Poutchek by a rather disturbing 1-6 6-2 6-2 scoreline. After completely dominating the 1st set, Monica lost her way big time at 2 all in both the 2nd and 3rd sets.

I don't know what exactly happened out there but it is hard to find much positive about this result. All we can do it hope Monica plays better at Wimbledon. I understand that Monica uses 2 hands on the forehand when she goes for more pace, but will often use a 1 handed slice forehand aswell. I think she actually prefers the slice.

I think she only plays a two-handed forehand to try and put off her opponent. It's your pretty basic two handed handed forehand, its not a winner shot or anything. She plays one handed mostly because she can either do a forehand, forehand slice, forehand dropshot or forehand lob with it.

Her match against Jelena Jankovic has to be the most memorable match of the year so far. She was such a tease to her - she tried a dropshot pretty much every single rally it was hilarious! There was a couple of them that only just got over the tape and basically rolled

Absolutely horrible singles draw for Monica. She got Magda Rybarikova. Monica beat Magda last year in the 1st round of the qualies. I loved that match and I remembered thinking at the time that next year both would be in the main draw. I didn't imagine it would again be against each other.

As mentioned Monica did beat Magda last year but Magda is playing so much better this year, I have seen all three of her qualifying matches and she is playing great, I expected her to get to the 3rd or 4th round the way she was playing. I know Monica can play great on grass too even though she had a couple of disappointing losses on grass so far this year. It is just a shame these two incredibly talented shotmakers both with such amazing and entertaining games should be drawn together for a 2nd year in a row. :awww:

Me too. I saw their match last year and it was a wonderful match but I could tell that both players as entertaining as they were, were far from the finished article. A year later and the they are both much better players but even now they still have further to improve. That said Magda has been playing absolutely awesome this week and it is going to require a fabulous performance from Monica to beat her. Of course Monica can do it but she is going to have to play at the very top of her game throughout and not let up or lose consentration for one second. As I said before, as much as I love Magda, I want Monica to win this. :worship:

I think the draw is alright. If Monica plays well enough, she could perhaps go as far as the 4th round.

R128: Rybarikova, who as Chris said Monica did beat on grass last year.
R64: Szavay, who is very inexperienced on grass or Garbin, who on grass = :haha:
R32: Schiavone, Medina-Garrigues, Yan, Paszek- all winnable matches for sure.
R16: Well Monica caused hell for JJ in Paris, so why not for Ana here?

Her draw could have been ALOT worse than this. I look for Monica to win her 1st grand slam MD singles match next week. :bounce:

Doubles draw is not so good. Her and Sorana should be able to get by Cibulkova/Kleybanova (50-50 match). But in the 2nd round they draw world no. 3's Peschke/Stubbs, who just beat Raymond/Stosur 6-1 6-2. :scared:

Chris, have you managed to see any of this match. If so, how was Monica playing? :)

Monica took a while to get into the match, although a lot of this had to do with the great play by Magda. In the 2nd set Monica got into an amazing groove and her underspin slice start causing Magda a lot of trouble. One could see she was concerned. The 3rd set has been some of the most amazing tennis I have seen this year with both women giving it their all and brilliant point after brilliant point. Both girls are serving well, making fabulous approach shots, great volleys, lobs, drop shots. I also have to say I'm really pleased with how much Monica has improved her serve. Last year it was inconsistant and sometimes a bit of a liability. Now it is definately a strength. Because both girls can hit hard but also have immense touch and also both girls have great creativity and can hit such a variety of different testing shots both girls are being really tested in terms of how well they can improvise when they are stretched and it must be said passing the tests very well.

Quite simply the match has got better and better. It's has been as entertaining as any tennis I have seen this year. Probably more so. The winner of the match really should make the 4th round. I hope it will be Monica but as thing stand right now it will be tough. The 3rd set has been ultra competitive with only one break. That came after a long game and it must be said Magda played some super points to eventually get the break.

For Monica to win this match now she can't afford another slow start. Her forehand slice, which has done a lot of damage and caused Magda fits must be working from the very start.

The only criticisms I would have of Monica would be that her body language still doesn't convey the confidence it should. She always looks discouraged even when she has won the point with a great shot. She often acts like she doesn't believe she can win even when her play suggests otherwise. I really hope she can do something about this. She also needs to keep focus better as it has been Monica who has made the most errors and some of them have been pretty sloppy and careless and in a match of such high quality as this those errors are always going to be very crucial. She will need to play an outstanding game to break Magda to keep this match alive. She most definately is capable but it will be tough.

I like Magda a lot. She is playing amazing tennis. She is so graceful and, like Monica, her game is so suited to grass. But it didn't take long watching this match before I knew in my heart I wanted Monica to win. What Monica does with a racquet is just beyond belief. She just has a very special game that is like nothing else. And she is able to make tennis into something so much more fun the the usual one pace back and foward baseline hitting seen in most women's matches.

Win or lose, with this match Monica has definately now firmly secured her place as my favourite player. :inlove:  :worship: :bounce:

What I say today was absolutely awesome folks!!! :bounce:

Today Monica played 4 games of absolutely almost impossibly brilliant virtually perfect tennis to beat Magda Rybarikova. The standard of Monica's tennis today was just out of this world. Magda did nothing wrong. She fought hard in almost all the points which were highly competitive. But Magda could only win three of these points over the four games. One was a return of serve winner by Magda off a very decent serve by Monica. The other two points Monica lost were points that would deserve to be in the highlight reel of a Grand Slam final. Basically Magda had to play like a top 10 player just to win a point. As for Monica, she made no errors in the entire four games. Most of the points were won on Monica's winners. She was hitting her forehand slice to perfection but all of her other shots were working too. She could hit hard and flat, add topspin, anything. She attacked the net at every opportunity and was deadly there making some incredibly difficult volleys. Sometimes words can't convey how good something is and that is how I feel writing this. Nothing I write can sum up just how great Monica played today. I wish I had those four games on video to show people so they would believe me. I could watch such a video again and again. It was that good.

Magda actually played really well over the four games but while she hit a lot of super shots everything came back. Most points were 12+ strokes. But it wasn't baseline to baseline at all. There was lots of netplay, lobs, overheads that got returned, err well Magda's overheads anyway.

One unfortunate thing I should mention, after Monica broke, held and the broke again, winning 12 out of 13 points, Magda called an injury timeout to disrupt Monica before serving for the match. As I've said before I like Magda but this was a bit disappointing. But Monica didn't let it affect her and won to 30. Despite the bit of rather bad sportsmanship from Magda I did feel very sorry for her after the match. She played some fine tennis and yet she had only three points to show for it, a match that she must have expected to win overnight was taken from her in a brutal manner. After the match, Magda looked shattered and nobody could blame her.

I started this thread last year after seeing Monica in the Wimbledon qualies at Roehampton. I titled the thread "The Amazing and Remarkable Monica Niculescu". Never before have a felt more justified in doing so. The tennis I saw Monica play today was truly amazing and remarkable. :worship:

Next up is Szavay. I didn't see Szavay's 1st match so I can't say how well she is playing, but I know how well Monica is playing. I also know that the bookmakers rate Monica as a real longshot to win. I however believe this is Monica's match to win and will be very suprised if she doesn't. :bounce:

Oh, one last thing. I was a bit disappointed that after seeing Monica put in such a great performance today there was no thread to acknowledge the win in the general forum. I hope that doesn't happen when she beats Szavay. :rocker:

Agnes leads H2H 2-0, although both of these matches were on Clay. Everyones post seem to suggest that Agnes isn't very comfortable on Grass, so that plus the fact that Monica is in incredible form sounds like a good combination to make round 3 :aparty:

Hopefully Chris got to this match, would be interesting to hear what happenned. Looking at the scoreline and stats it would suggest that Monica was up a set and 5-3 but then her serve percentage started to fall along with the amount of points she won on her second serves, along with the games.

Well what can you say? Szavay was a good opponent. She wasn't easy. But Monica was in complete control of the match. Unfortunately, Monica got distracted by a couple of umpire overrules and never regained focus. And once one game slipped she just totally lost commitment to her game. This isn't the first time this has happened, it kind of happened last year in the 2nd round of qualifying against Cornet but this was more glarring and quite sad to see. The 3rd set was a real downer.

Hard to believe that the same player could play as well as she did yesterday and as poorly during stages of the 3rd set as she did today. But tennis is strange.

Monica has made so much improvement in her game over the last year. Her serve has improved out of sight from what it was last year compared to this year. She is also moving better too. But she still has more to work on. And the areas where the most improvement are needed are her mental strength and focus along with her body language.

In 2009 I want to see Monica back in SW19, a girl who gives nothing to the opponent in terms of her body langauge and one whose focus, commitment, and fighting spirit is continuous and unshakable. Rafael Nadal and Agnieszka Radwanska would be great examples for Monica to emulate in terms of mental toughness. I believe Monica is totally capable of achieving this. It is an exciting prospect. A mentally tough Monica will be a formidable opponent to every single player on the WTA tour. Good luck Monica, you can do it. :rocker:

Monica will definately be around a while longer. Monica and Sorana won their doubles match 6-1 ret. They both played very well. I was concerned that Monica would look down and wouldn't have her heart in it for the doubles but far from it. She looked so happy playing doubles and was full of energy. She was talking a lot to Sorana during the breaks and was smiling and laughing and jumping up and down. The loss to Agnes is definately not going to stay with her. She will keep getting better and she is clearly and very happy soul. :D

i have seen her playing double twice in Zwevegem and Torhout with Tammy Hendler and it was just the same thing. Smiling laughing very nice to see :)

Unfortunately Monica and Sorana lost their 2nd round match in not a very elegant fashion. 6-1 6-2 for the 3rd seeds, Peschke and Stubbs. :(
