We all know that Serena has the "me against the world attitude." Most likely this resulted from the indoctrination that she received at the hands of Richard while she was growing-up. While she certainly had significant challenges to overcome, it is clear that her views do not always reflect reality.

Do you think that, in an effort to create a champion out of Serena Richard did her much harm? Could the indoctrination that she has undergone be considered child abuse even?

Don't know but maybe a rash of booing and bad calls just might had a bit to do with it. In addition, the embracing of their opponents not only away but at home probably added to that indoctrination you speak of.

i seriously doubt that.

i mean, they could have been abused by someone else outside their family, but richard cares way too much about them to beat them or harm them.

Why don't Serena's views reflect reality? Because they aren't yours? They aren't views that relate to another player? On what grounds do you have to invalidate what obstacles and what reality Serena has to face day in and day out? And as far as Richard goes, all we've seen is that Serena (and Venus) has a wonderful relationship not only with Richard, but the Williams family is close unlike what could be said about other players who feel family and siblings aren't important. The only harm seems to have been done by people who don't care for success Serena has gained.

Serena is one of the best in the world at what she does, Serena is insanely wealthy, Serena is loved and admired by millions of people worldwide.....CURSE THAT RICHARD FOR ABUSING HER LIKE THAT! :fiery:

I always thought it was Henin who had the 'me (and Carlos) against the world' attitude.

Serena, imo, always had the 'me, Venus, Dad, Mom against the world' attitude.

I think the reason why Serena is universally hated the world over is because of the arrogant way in which she speaks, esp with the disrespectful way that she speaks about other players.
No one can deny that.
As she says herself, she is a the spoilt younger sister, the whiner and complainer, who will never compliment her opponent when she loses, but will make nasty remarks about it later on.
Hopefully she will mature as the years go by and cease with this impolite attitude that everyone universally dislikes.

:) Me too but I guess, especially how Richard was pushing her daughters into the limmelight and how the friction was created with Hingis could have been a reason with Serena's mindset during these interviews, it seems almost defensive as it is aggressive.

Some people actually like that, some people don't. In any case Serena is what she is and she won't be changing for us, unless of course some press person makes a big deal of it and it blows out of proportion.

hehe, I actually just thought of that now with Justine, but now Justine seems more happy and open especially after her break up with Louis Vuitton I mean YSL or was it Pierre? And her healing with her family.

Do you really think if you were rich or occupy with important things in
your life like Serena, would you have time to write these things you are
saying on this board. Though I haven't seen many of your posts; I believe
this one is no different from the many you have written about not only
Serena but other players.

Look, I'm sorry that Serena beat Maria's ass twice in a row. And for you to make judgements on someone's character- someone that you don't even know- and make silly claims about her mental health and her upbringing, all because of your hatred, then your the one with the real issue.

Now, I can't get passed the "her view do not always reflect reality". Can you explain, because they seem pretty real to me.

Some thoughts on this:

Serena has a large number of detractors whp pick apart everything she says, actively hope she gets beaten in finals, cheer against her, etc. You can see that from this board alone.

Then couple that with the "strange" occurances which have happened to her and her sister quite a few times: The Indian Wells incident, the French Open 03 incident, the bogus calls in that Capriati match. Then you have incidents like when mauresmo make the implication that her and Venus decided who won GS finals before they faced each other. And of course, critics who have for the past two years been questioning Serena's committment and professionalism.

You think that Serena's reactions are overblown and unwarranted. I think they're justified.

Maria Sharapova is my favorite player. I admire her a lot.

Anytime I see a thread that says something like "not meant to be a hater thread" I immediately suspect that someone is about to word something very carefully to mask what they are actually saying. The most intelligent observation I have read in this thread was this gently sarcastic response:

Serena is one of the best in the world at what she does, Serena is insanely wealthy, Serena is loved and admired by millions of people worldwide.....CURSE THAT RICHARD FOR ABUSING HER LIKE THAT!

I wish people could come to realize that Serena (and also Maria)are enormously talented and decent people, both are class acts, and both are admired far beyond the smaller circle of tennis fans.

Treasure them.
