The best-to kids

19.06.2007

WTA star Elena Dementieva brought joy to dozens of local schoolchildren when she paid a visit to Pevensey and Westham Primary School, Eastbourne, on Tuesday.

The world No.12, and International Women’s Open fourth seed, spent time playing short tennis with the youngsters before answering several questions from the kids.

She also posed for pictures with the children and autographed photos of herself in action.

The 25-year-old from Moscow, who has won seven WTA Tour singles titles and reached the semi-finals of the US Open twice, is currently making her debut appearance at the International Women’s Open in Devonshire Park.

Dementieva was introduced to Eleanor Chapman, 7, from Westham who has recently been identified as one of the top young players in the area after attending coaching sessions at the David Lloyd Club.

The Russian star was also presented with a bouquet of flowers and a commemorative balloon by four-year-olds Megan Treacher and Owen Hawes.

Dementieva said: “I enjoy playing tennis with children and it was very nice to visit the school. The children were pretty good, they were very excited to see me and I had a great time.

“It’s very important for players to promote the sport, help with coaching clinics and to visit schools. It helps the kids understand more about the game and get them to like the sport more.

“This is my first time in Eastbourne and I’m really looking forward to the rest of the week.”

Remarkably the last three International Women’s Open entrants to visit Pevensey and Westham Primary School have gone on to lift the Eastbourne trophy. Dementieva would be delighted if she could continue that trend.

A mistake: Did Elena reach US Open final twice? I think she entered grand slam finals twice, but of 2 different Grand Slams - US and French

It's an error, because she's reached the semis of the US Open three times (2000, 2004, 2005).

She reached the USO final in singles 2004 and doubles 2005.

Edit: Never mind, I read it wrong. Yeah error.
