I was just looking at some of her results but what stuck out was that she is down as being 1.90m, doesn't that make her taller than Lindsay and Bovina, either way this is a good departure from serena henin threads all the time. Any fans of her on here?

Yes, she definitely has fans here. :) She has a cheering thread in the Asian Assault forum.

She's a big girl with a big serve, a manly game, and she undeniably looks alot like a man as well :tape:

Yup. Bovina and Lindsay are both 1.89m.

When someone (Hantuchova, maybe?) played her, she mentioned afterwards that Akgul looks a fair bit taller than her listed height, too.

I say a pic of her in Tashkent, where she lost to Kraijeck and she looked literally
6,5', seriously, here it is.

I feel bad for her. Her federation has no money, and she has to wear mens clothing because she is just to tall, so she cant wear the feminine stuff like the players we see on tv and stuff.

I had the pleasure of meeting her in Australia last year. As nice a girl as you could ever wish to meet and also highly intelligent. She is basically self-taught (and you can see this when she plays), gets next to no support from her federation (I'm sure they have no money either), struggles to meet ends meet (cannot afford to travel to too many tournaments). If anyone needs some support, it is she!

She had a lot of struggles in the past financially, but it looks like she is finally getting over the hump with that. After her qualifying roun showing at Wimbledon, she will have made over $50,000 so far this year.

Even better, she moved up to #135 after that showing and is only defending NINE points between now and November. She could definitely crack the top 100 by then and if she does, will be financially set to play on the tour, against all odds.

She was so close to qualifying for this years maindraw:D Atleast she won 2 matches in qualifying anda nice sum of money :) :bounce: These efforts will help with some of her travelling expenses this summer, aswell as getting her into most wta quali draws. Good Luck! :-)

Yes. She has a big serve, but that's obvious. I was hoping she could qualify for the MD at Wimbledon. :(

Thanks for and I agree with all the replies above. The comment saying she is basically self-taught and you can see it by watching her is very true.

If she could get some real coaching, there would be an amazing jump in her performance.

I really support her because she has no support. Shocking to see her play without tennis shoes in 2006, if you can believe it.

I wrote up a match report from Cincinnati - July or August '06 - maybe I'll try to dig it up.

And it's great to see some people taking an interest. :wavey:

i member watching her match against hantuchova in the 2nd or 3rd round of the '05 aussie... altho she lost in straight sets, i was very impressed by her game, shes a very heavy hitter...

scary thing is, she is a dead set man... she is built like on, looks like one and was actually wearing a mans shirt against hantuchova... the commentators found that very funny!

Great to see that Akgul is getting a lot of attention on this board. I really hope she can get some consistent coaching. (Or perhaps now she is) I love supporting the "unique" player...one that isn't from Bollettieri's but has her own unique story...(*plug* Dally Randriantefy, Chin-Bee Khoo)

Heh, I hope you WON'T dig up that sad report! I'm positive that Akgul's game has improved enormously since then; otherwise there's no way she could have won those 4 matches at RG and two in Wimbledon qualies. Our Akgul's on the move, baby!

And happy birthday, sweet Akgul. :aparty: I only wish you could know about the many fans you have now, from all over the world. I hope you continue to have a wonderful year. :hearts:

By the way, she is known as the Gentle Giant. :)
