View Full Version : Lynn Welsh :o

Anyone else thinks she is a bad umpire? I mean, she never ever overrules any calls that the linesman made and even if the ball is metres out and she knows it she lets the players challenge.

The Challenge System isnt supposed to make umpires useless. When a player askes if the ball was in or out the umpire has to say his opinion and not always say "I dont know, its close, you can check it". Lynn Wels is the perfect example for a passive, useless umpire. Her annoying voice doesnt help either.

Sadly, there are only few umpires who dont rely on the system and dare to overrule. :(

but the new system i not very helpfull to make a chair-umpire selfconfident to overrule.
i mean, when the chair-umpire overrule and the player check it then the chair-umpire looks like a idiot if his decision was wrong

rather "lllllllllooooooooooooooooove fifteeeeeeeeyyyyyyyn" :p

And she seriously NEVER overrules. Surprised to see many think she is the best umpire.

An umpire is paid for what they are doing. If they overrule, and they were wrong it doesnt matter - they are showing that they care, that they pay attention on whats going on on the court. I am pretty sure players appreciate a more active umpire than a Lynn Welsh who only gives the scores. At least that is what I think.

Terrible umpire :o she never overrules at the right times. I remember the Sharapova - Pennetta match at Wimbledon last year and Flavia hit a BH winner that was called out but actually hit a line that was right beside Welsh and she just said she didn't know :o

Is she the same umpire which officiated the Justine - Jelena match in this year's RG?

If the answer is "Yes", then I agree she's a bad umpire...

i hate the way she says "five"

for example, instead of "five games all", she always says "a-five games all." Ugh

Welsh is too passive.
Counterparts are de Jenken and Herfel - but Herfel often overrules line calls 20 miles away :cuckoo:

not true. I remember her overruling a line call at IW. The player questioned, they use the shot spot system and it shows that her overrule was incorrect. the line call WAS actually correct.

Yes even before the challenge system she was one of the passive out there interms of overruling the call BUT this new system doesnt help umpires to overall calls.

I rather prefer an confident overrule/umpire than this challenge system which somehow/sometimes shows the "very close" balls very out,and denies the umpire's "out" overall with 0.1 mm in call :o and it is still not %100 trustable.

Mohammed Lahyani is the best umpire on the tour in my opinion, though he is %99 if not all the time at mens matches.

alison lang i have seen make so many errors and she can get pushed around by the stronger charecters (sharapova pierce ect) who when challenging her can back her into a corner and make the wrong decision!

Yesterday in s-Hertogenbosch final there were at least 12 challenges (and some were seriously miles out) and Welsh did say nothing, she let the players challenge. Why cant she give players her opinion about it. She can say I saw it out, but I am not sure enough to overrule it. I dont know whats hard for an umpire to do that.

And its not only about Welsh, its a general problem the challenge system brought. I think in two or three years we will have a computer machine doing their job (and as some say, Welsh already has a machine-like voice  )

Well, it seems you doesn't like her, so you should at least remember her overrule during that AO final ! People are still talking about it even if it was three years ago. Whatever you think of it, De Jenken is one of umpires that still dare to overrule, and some people even think she dares too often. :p

There was also a call challenged by Chakvetadze (at 5-4 something, right before the rain delay) on which she gave her opinion and Chakvetadze didn't want to challenge anymore. So she does give her opinion and players do rely on it.

I think she is a good umpire. She is always very 'cool' and like someone mentioned before, she doesn't seem like the type you want to mess around with.

Since SO many people on here are professional umpires and can do a better job than any of the aforementioned names. First of all, umpires have to pass a lot of tests and are watched by panels who make decisions if they are good enough or not. They have hard jobs. Umpiring is a tough job. As a former USA Volleyball Referee, there is a lot of pressure on you and you must be clear, confident, and quick with your decisions. These umpires are all great at what they do. True, some are better than others, but I would like many of you to go try to become one yourself. No-one here can criticize you on your work, so don't do it to others. To me, De Jenkin, Welsh, Lange, and Herfel are the best umpires for women.

See, Alves also passed those tests.

As much as I hate what happened in that match, she is still an adequate umpire. She does her job and has not had any big complaints since then. From what I saw, it appeared she was reprimanded for what happened. There is a system of checks with these umpires. If she passed their tests and then on the job fucked up, the umpires' panel made a decesion on what to do with her. Look what happened to Ted 'Sprembeldon' Watts. He was punished for his fuck up. Alves is back and is doing a fine enough job atm. I haven't had any problems with her since 2004 USO. It is like a doctor or lawyer. They may have passed all their tests, but they can still screw up on the job. We are human beings for crying out loud. The minute you have your referee license and are trusted enough to be umpiring the Grand Slam matches in the second week, then you can talk. Otherwise, shut up unless you want others commentating on your job that you do to make a living.
