Serving for the match against World #1 and losing doesnt neccessarily mean she choked or something. 5*-4 to 5-5* isnt exactly what I would call a choke anyways, this is womens tennis. Chakvetadze actually is choking at the moment.

Yes, she did which is a total shame because she had Justine on the ropes in the third set up until 5-4. Justine is a better matchplayer but Amelie definitely is the better grasscourt player.

Amelie was incocnsistent for most of the match: brilliant one point, junior-ish the next, twice she steadied the ship for a few consecutive games and during those periods she recovered the break in the 2nd and got up a break in the 3rd. Basically, displayed a better grass-court game than Justine. Still, Justine was no slouch, was steadier on big points, did great to make sure she took advantage of any opportunity presented, which is what you want to players to do.

In general: a dramatic match, but not that high quality, which is understandable and fine as preparation.

Kinda ironic that both players won the sets where the other one was leading 4-2 and was "supposed" to win!

But finally a hard-faught win in 3 sets over Amelie for Justine! :D

Not choking perse...remember Justine had the match in the bag too, up set and a break! Soo...this was just a shit of momentum as the whole match was really. Sometimes it was Justine who was dominating, then Momo rallied back,etc..

Match showed us a few things:
-Justine's still vulnerable on her backhand side when you hard an deep to that corner...it took Momo whole three sets to figure this out.
-Momo tried to finesse her volleys too often and KEPT going to Justine's FOREHAND!! instead of going deep to the backhand.
-Momo needs to be more agressive returning second serves...Justine won too many games in which didn't hit a single first serve.
- Justine's the best defensive player right now..not because she's fast, it's because she ANTICIPATES so well. Amazing.

Wimbledon got more interesting....'cause Eastbourne final showed that against a good grass-court player, Justine will have to be sharp if she wants to win this title.

Does "Eastbourne Curse" really exist
I heard it from other forums,
really??

There is no curse if the French Open winner wins the Eastbourne title. Unless you consider winning Wimbledon or being runner up a curse. Only three women have ever won both titles in the same year. Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, and Justine Henin. When both Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova won both in the same year, they went on to win Wimbledon. Last year, when Henin won both she was runner-up. That's not a curse, it's a good luck charm.

Anyway, a great match from both Henin and Mauresmo!!! Henin had only won one point on Mauresmo's serve until the 5/4 game when she had to break Mauresmo's serve. Next time, try not to give me a heart attack, Ju!!!

Great first serve percentage for the tournament!!! 65% for the match, and in the mid-60s for the tournament!!! This is her highest first serving percentage tournament in several years!!! Great stuff!!!

I thought and was hoping Amelie could pull it off, defeating Justine( congrats ) would have boost her confidence, it's going to be a little bit more tricky for her at Wimbledon mentally then I first thought. She's going to have to believe in her self against elite competition when it get tight, with out that there's no possibility for a repeat.

She was in great form against Nicole but Amelie is a much more difficult opponent. Beautiful tennis at times from Amelie and the same from Justine. Amelie needed this match for Wimbledon and looks ready to defend however, watching Justine over the last month I know she wasn't at her best today and still pulled it out at the end against one of the best. That says alot about Justine's mental approach.

Momo didn't play as well during crucial games. However, was it she really choked or was it Justine turned it on and went for broke at the critical times?

I believe it's the latter.

Fantastic match by both ladies. One of the best match of this season

Justine could have won it in two, Amelie had her chance in the third.

I don't think this is any indication of how a Wimbledon meeting might work out but it does look as if Maueresmo is quietly creeping into form.

Both of these women didn't take their chances and could have made the job easier. We'll have to see how Serena plays before we make any more comments regarding Justines match up with her and their play. Let's not forget Serena is mentally tougher than Justine, and if she had the chances Amelie did then this match would have been over for Justine. :D

Seriously, some people here to need to look up the definition of a "choke" instead of throwing it out there and make it seem like they know anything about playing tennis.
Losing a match when up 5-1 in the last set is a choke.
Getting broken when serving for match isn't a choke when you're playing against the freaking number one player in the world.
Get real.

Hmm, interesting scoreline. Amelie is certainly a better grasscourt player but Justine is about three/four/five times as mentally tough as her, in this type of close three-setter it would just about favour her. And it did.

I didn't think the match was high qualitiy as such, i much prefered Last years final or even the wimbledon final. Amelie could have won in two, but she was making some really DUMB errors. The poor shot selection or better, poor execution really cost her. She went on a string of games, not able to return the ball in gourt at all. And serve volleying on her slower second serves allowing Justine (who is a great returner) to pass her.

But on the positive, it was good fight from her after being a set and a break down. In those final games Justine mental toughness and clear thinking under pressure pulled her though. Fair game. Also, Amelie got the grass court practice so let's see.

Lol, who cares, Amélie won the most important match these two have so far played on grass - Wimbledon 2006 final! :p ;)

Unfortunately I haven't seen the match yet, but it sounds like a great one! :) No surprises that both were so called 'choking' ( ) at different stages, there was a title at stake, not to mention that there's probably going to always be a bit of extra tension when these two players meet! :p

Yes, of course it would have been great (for her fans) if Amélie had won today, but I'm really happy that she pushed the world No. 1 and in form player so close, given all her injury problems, and not to mention the abdominal surgery she had in March keeping her out for 2 months. Amélie said she wanted to test herself against the best in the world (atm), and I think if she had to lose, I'm think she'd happy with it being 7/6 in the third set!

Where did you come from all of a sudden? 50 posts since 2005? I don't usually check post #'s, either, but this seemed notable to me.

I'll enjoy Mauresmo winning matches plenty, thank you very much, and now that she's healthy again, I expect her to go deep at Wimbledon, and wouldn't be surprised to see her name on the Venus Rosewater dish for the 2nd year in a row. As for Henin, nice win, but if she's so exhausted by playing finals all the time, she should either play less often or win faster. Mauresmo beating Henin has to do with the simple fact that Mauresmo was better that day in every department. Why that was is irrelevant.

I'd bet money Henin would trade in all her non-French Open tournament wins this season for last years Wimbledon title.

Oh I know. When Serena comes back from 60 54 2 match points down they don't call it choking. But when Justine breaks at 45 they call it a choke.

Actually i had about 1 pms from Henin fans telling me how annoying it was that ju choked. I don't think Momo or Henin choked throughout the entire match, they lost their leads due to dips in momentum, changes in wind upsetting rythmn etc.

Eurosport showed only the third set, taped. I really wanted to watch this - all of it.

Anyh00, of what I got to see: it was much like the Wimbledon final - tight, some flashes of brilliant racquet artistry from both, but not that well played (many shanks, botched volleys and needless UEs). And JH ultimately prevailed much because of her edge in baseline firepower - FH mostly. Mauresmo was trying to hit as deep as possible to prevent JH from entering the court and overpowering her, but that was difficult to do considering the wind and how shaky her own groundstrokes can be. JH began the set off her game, and was way too passive on the service game in which she got broken. I thought Mauresmo would be able to close it out, but from then on she played much like she did on the latter stages of that set vs Petrova (i.e. crap). Her serve is usually more reliable than JH's, and that will always be an advantage on grass, where her wide sliced serve to the deuce court is unreturnable (whereas on other surfaces it's quite attackable - check the Dubai final).

You did see the worst of the 3 sets, btw. But usually it was only one player playing brilliantly while the other struggled...a huge see-saw. I'd also agree that by the end of that match it was looking a lot like the underwhelming Wimby 06 final. The wind played a huge huge part in that as well as the to-be-expected grass bounces.

Please, even maumau said after last year's Wimbledon final that henin was tired. Same happened yesterday because maumau is always on vacation during claycourt season. Anyway, she fullfiled her qouta of finals so no final for maumau until indoors season, maybe even later

this is an excellent result for Mauresmo. It's proves she still has the game to compete with this best. honestly losing doesn't mean much in my opinion.

It was...I think she's totally back now. Not only can she compete with the best, but she can beat them, too...anybody who watched the match could see that, despite the fact that she didn't win this time.

Justine won't have to take Serena out. Alicia or Sam will do it for her.

I agree. Leif Shiras and Katrina Adams (the Tennis Channel announcers) were going ballistic every other point! These two match up well together - love the one-handers and volleys:kiss:

I love the fact that there are actually two women on tour who can hold serve twice in a row..... ;)
